Cello at Burning Man

I am a Bay Area Cellist who will be at Burning Man 2008. I looking to connect with musicians and others who would like to incorporate cello into what they are doing. A cello would be wonderful out there.
I think I saw Joshua Bell play by an art piece a few years ago.

Cellist, I'd love to hear you play at sunset somewhere on the Playa.

This happened in 2006 at the Temple.
I had place my Dads Ashes with-in the Temple and hung out a lot during the week at the Temple to be with "Dad". This Japanese photographer kept hanging out a lot also. He had very nice gear. One day this guy pulled out a Cello and was tuning ect ect. This camera guy came up with the biggest smile on his face and with very little English he handed off his camera gear to the cello guy. He takes the Cello over to some steps and begins to play. He to played like a Pro. He slipped so fast into his magic, he was crying and smiling at the same time. We all had tears while listening to this Master. The owner of the Cello took many photos of him playing and of all of us enjoying his new friend.
Before this Magic happened this photographer was being very in your face while taking photos. It was borderline rude and I had many bad thoughts about this guy bugging me during my "Dad Time".
What hit me like a brick that afternoon was he needed to be there, like I need to be there and I was just Damn lucky to be there at the RIGHT time.

You may or not have a moment like this, but you need to be "THERE".
And thanks for letting me trip down memory lane.........

Cellist,

Your sound will be so very welcome. One of the peak musical experiences of my life occurred at Tanglewood many years ago. YoYo Ma was rehearsing the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the BSO conducted by Ozawa in the shed on a damp afternoon. We sat on a bench to the side, under an umbrella and it was simply a magical moment. Never will forget it.

We will be in Hushville and would love to hear you play. I will arrange to have a group to listen and appreciate. Please do contct me and let me know where you plan to camp. If nowhere else, you will be welcome to join us in Hushville.

Don't take your good cello out there; the dry air can be very hard on instruments.

I cannot reiterate what Fishy said - 6% humidity and 100 degrees going down to 40 degrees at 90% humidity will wreak havoc on any wood instrument.

We brought an upright piano last year - never sounded the same again.

Yep, I'll third what Fishy and 007 said, I had a brace of professional chromatic harmonicas, full set from a to g#. Really. Some were sent from Europe. Wooden comb Hohners, played *really* sweet...

I took 5 out there. Every single one of them were ruined, cracked wood, air leaks, warpage, the reeds went wonky from dust corrosion... Even tho I kept them in a regulated humidor and was really careful with them. The playa claimed them from me.

Take a backup instrument - do NOT take your "bread and butter" cello out there. Please. PLEASE!!! You will be guranteed major heartbreak, not immediately, but when you get home and your instrument takes on a whole new dimension.

Leave the Truck. The wife and kids are weather tight, and dust proof for the most part. You can always hose em off when you get home!

I saw a hardbody cello being played on the stage near Esplanade and ~9 o'clock. There were ballet dancers performing at the time.

It was beautiful.

I ~love~ hearing classical music beingplayed out on the playa.

The solid wood instruments that have been heavily laminated are probably more likely to survive the harsh, dry conditions of the desert.
