Those are kinda cool, but I wonder how they'll hold up in 70+ mph winds, and how dustproof they are? I know Domes get pretty beat, I even have a bent strut from last year, those canvas sides and a single pole would make me kinda nervous...

The bell tent design is a very proven high wind/harsh environment tent. The military used this design for arctic tents for years.

We almost bought a surplus arctic tent until we decided on a more compact Kodiak.

It'd be easy enough to make it a double wall... extend the top pole through the center of the bottom, and run a larger version above it. Excellent for hot weather use (we were talking about insulation of tents elsewhere).

Who knows, it might be the next development to the ubiquitous playa dome. Were I rich I might even plunk down for one. What are the downsides??

I use bell type tents.. always seem to hold up fine as long as there isn't a problem with the guy lines. Not my ideal setup for BM but good enough if you're poor. I used one last year for storage and it got kinda hot in there with no additional shade on top.

You don't have to be rich for a surplus one. 12x12 are around $200 and 14x14 area round $350 (taller side walls).

Your idea of extending the center pole would be an excellent way of adding a shaded layer (or two) above the tent.

That's what I was thinking - one could almost do a triple layer like that, and you'd have a bedu-style paradise (see my other thing about insulation). All you need then is a fan and a mister (or a mister running a fan... heh heh heh...)
