Comfortable way to go.
You still have to conserve water.
Good Luck! August is the best month for Wildland fire logistics companies. Shower trucks, kitchens, and generators are all in short supply. With Cali burning the way it is, there are tons of equipment orders going UTF in the computer (UTF - Unable To Fill) there might be some small one or two stall units available, but i doubt it.

At any time of day, whatever you are doing, when you hear the blessed sound of that water trucks airhorn, Don't hesitate, don't think, just strip off all your clothes and run as fast as you can and chase that life-giving water spray! It's cold and wonderful! Scream as much as you need to.
I keep a towel and a foot bath and some moisturizer/sunscreen always ready for afters.
Nothing is more invigorating! I do it 2 or 3x a day, never got sick or rashed. Just keep your mouth shut during. And watch your step and dont fall down or youll die.

I think that people swim in Frog Pond, don't they?

Mmmmm... Evap Pond Water.... Schluuuurp.... Argllglrl...

(Sorry, finally watched the Simpson's Movie, tho I was still looking for OJ...)

Some people don't mind the sprayer trucks; personally, I'd rather do the shower - I always was dustier AFTER I chased one of those damn things.

As for the water in Frog Pond, sure, you can swim in it. But getting it sprayed in your eyes might not be the same.

Soap? Doc bonners is OK. Plus you use so little to get really clean it's usually not an issue. Yeah, I love that stuff. (Esp the Almond or scentless baby versions, not as freezy as the others)

Get a sunshower, practice at home B4 you go. I also have (or had(?)) a garden Sprayer with a kitchen spritzer handle and second valve, that puppy works good, tho the water is COLD. Someday I''ll get a Coleman Hudson heated system... Shower on a pallet in an evap pond, use less than a gallon total, and you're way cool. I can't do BRC without a daily shower...

I've never understood all the silly BS about chasing sewage trucks, messy evap ponds, etc.
The First Mate and I take nice showers every day, sometimes more than once. She washes and thoroughly rinses her long hair.
If you want water, bring it! It's easy. Water isn't that big, and not that heavy. I use 3 or 4 30-gallon barrels for freshwater, and as they are emptied I use them to haul the now-grey water out.
No screwing around with ponds, no trying to get clean with a baby wipe, no rationing 11 drops of water per shower.

We built a full-on shower set-up one year. It wasn't difficult, but it wasn't really necessary either. I do enjoy one or two showers a week in BRC, but anything beyond that is kinda pointless. I have a mister, some no-rinse body wash and shampoo, and a fucking carton of wet-wipes. That's as clean as I'm gonna get in the dust. If I feel the need to get cleaner I just swing by Astral Headwash and The Human Carcass Wash.

I like to shower daily, which is why I built a shower. I like to get dirty, but I also like to get clean.

Sterile unless there's a uti involved. And it's still made from metabolic wastes. Of course, it's diluted by the water.

Given how slick the mud gets behind the trucks, I wonder....could you mudski? Sounds dangerous and stupid.....

Please decide that I'm right, and try this somewhere near the Three O'Clock Keyhole so i can watch.....

The big disadvantages that I've heard about evaporation ponds are these: they end up getting dusty and muddy, and subsequently don't evaporate so well. And they end up getting stinky. But I reckon if they are well-made and well-attended to, these factors can be minimized. Most of the problems probably come from people who want to throw it together as fast as possible and then forget about it. It's a little known fact that you must sing to your evap pond, and caress it gently, for half an hour each day.

Here's a great design for a shower that doesn't require an evap pond... instead you collect the grey water and take it out with you. :idea:Nosefish shower. Pretty reasonable if you don't go crazy with a bunch of five-gallon showers! That's what I'll be putting together for next year. Can't do it this year due to my travel plans, so I'll just be using wet wipes and generally enjoying being dusty.

Mine was inspired from the nosefish design. I made my platform a little bigger and instead of PVC, I got a little artsy with bamboo, but otherwise it's basically the same thing and worked out great.

I'm especially confused why no water/remnant shower pools allowed on the playa... damage to the ecology? Don't those pools dry up quickly?

Will there still be a truck that sprays water? How often does it operate?

I am thinking to just bring a bottle mister and mist myself a few times a day. I do this at the beach. Anyone else gotten away with using just a mister instead of showering???
Get yourself a solar shower and a kiddie pool and find or make some kind of structure (pvc pipes, two ladders, your friend's RV ladder, or the outside of your neighbors camp - ask permission first). If it's just you or maybe just a couple people, it will pretty much evaporate. If you have more than that, you need an evaporation pond. (google "evaporation pond + burning man")

Read the survival guide. It's not a campground, it's just a flat space cleared out for you to build your home for a week. You're camping.

There's no such thing as a shower truck - they spread water on the street to help keep the dust down. Running behind it and splashing is great, if you don't mind walking back in ankle deep mud once you've washed off.

If you really want to keep it simple, get your solar shower (be careful, it gets REALLY hot in the afternoon. But don't wait until after dark, because it also gets cold very fast.)

Supplement with a handeld water spray bottle and baby wipes.

don't chase the water trucks...

Post by hoochie mama » Tue Jul 22, 2008 12:13 pm

I've always been told not only should you not chase the trucks for your own health ( it is non-potable water) , but you shouldn't even walk or ride your bike across the wet road after it's been by. As someone pointed out earlier, it messes up the streets. Don't believe me? Think about it. The trucks lays down a fine layer of water to keep dust down. You in your naked and dirty misguided enthusiasm run around after it. Each step you take picks up this now wet playa, and sticks it to your foot. You come back all muddy, and the nice layer of water on the street is now patchy. It dries that way, and you get bumpy streets. Just sit back and watch it happen.

So stay the hell off the wet streets!

This has been a public service announcement.

H.M.
