I got mine from an industrial safety place. $15-$20.
There are many choices out there.
Make sure they fit and don't fog up.
You may wear them a lot.

The army goggles are a minimum 7.31% more effective than anything you can find on Ebay.

After all it is military surplus after all and you know the military has the best of the best of the best ... with honors, Sir!

OTOH, if you ask a more specific question we may be able to actually say something of merit.

How about this little anecdote:

You are on the playa and one of these accidents happen to you, how will the rest of your life feel?

1. You are walking around minding your own business and step on exposed rebar. There is pain, there is funk, there is blood everywhere. EMT patches you up, and you merrily hobble along. You decide that next year you are getting some good boots.

2. You are walking around minding your own business and trip on exposed rebar. You fall face first and catch your right hand on a second spike of rebar. There is pain, there is funk, there is blood everywhere. EMT patches you up, and you have to figure out how to wipe your ass with the other hand for a few weeks. Fells like a fucking stranger, don't it. You decide that next year you are getting one of those expensive headlamps that work.

3 You are walking around minding your own business; you stop by a burn barrel to warm up. Some asswipe throws in a whippet cartridge and it explodes. You were wearing your expensive shatter proof goggles and the metal fragments and embers from the exploding barrel only give you superficial face injuries instead of gouging your eyes out.

You stop and you think, wow how fucking cool that I protected my eyes really well and how bad it would suck if something happened to them.

Or,

May not be the best looking, but cheap, and very effective. You should be able to grab a pair at your local surplus store for not much more. Come with two lenses, Clear and dark, that are easily interchangeable.

In the past, I've always used ski goggles, but since my last pair got pluined (ruined by playa), I picked up a set of these last year. They kicked ass!

I would just head into the local army/navy surplus store and pick soemthing up. The price point normally isnt to high and you know you are purchasing something comforatable and that it fits your face. Super important.

Most mil. surplus is fake.
If you can find a real store, there is some great stuff.

There is an amazing one in Provincetown, of all places and a good one in Fall River too.
Also in Fall River, the most ohmygod ice cream.

Comfortable and non-fogging is critical. If you don't have those two things you won't wear them, so "performance" is meaningless. I've had great luck on Ebay but it took me a few tries before I found something that fit properly.

I'd say go to a bunch of surplus stores and try out everything they have. Look closer at the beat up old vintage ones than the shiny new ones - beat up means they've been used for years and are still kicking.

This is the place just across the bridge from the downtown.
http://somersetcreamery.com/index.html

I don't remember the name of the surplus place, but it is in an old downtown area and is run by a vietnamese guy of indeterminant age.
I went by to get some czech military boots and the guy had just closed up.
I don't think it was far from the river.

I bought mine in Gerlach on the way in one year at the little grocery store. $10-$12. They work great. I wouldn't rely on them to protect me against rebar or exploding things but then again, I wouldn't trust ANY goggle for that. Not unless it was specifically OSHA rated for it.

I would imagine that most stores between Reno and BRC carry goggles for the playa. It would only make sense being that they live next to it.

I would also agree that most Army Surplus stores are fake. Our military surplus gets sold to other countries. Not Bob the army fanatic in a store down on main street. Just because they have a lot of old military stuff does not mean that the Pentagon is their merchandise supplier.

I use the clear shop goggles that you can pick up at Home Depot. Cheap and effective, just the way I like things. :)

Don't assume anything about reno.
I had trouble finding a cooler in reno before the burn started.
They said the camping season is over.

I couldn't find my goggles last year and bought cheapo at walmart.
The straps were sized for children so they never fit.
Not good for 5 minutes.
You have the choice of comfortable and falling off or so tight you wanted to die.
Barely fit over glasses too.
Get something that works before you get there.

Yeah, Bucky used to have a cool pair of white framed, purple lensed, Willy Wonka goggles ... he got them because they don't actually fit a human face. Some assclown swiped them during the whiteout. Bastard. Bucky wants his goggles back. And I hope the assclown got dust in his eyes.

Yeah, those work at night ... basically you need a pair that has interchangeable lenses, or a day and a night pair.

Taht's the one they meant. No store in Gerlach, only the Bruno megaplex. Empire grocery store.

too late for this year's burn but for past two christmases have seen Restoration Hardware sell as stocking stuffers old WWI pilot goggles (with clear lenses) for $20-$26 bucks. These are the old timey round eye-pieces with leather straps. Pretty cool and perfect for you STeamPunkers.

Cutting goggles work well. In the daytime..as they are tinted..heavily, but work well. Their are the round kind, with removeable lenses. Not..cheap..about $20..but last a long long time. Can be found at Welding supply companies. Ill see if I can find a link.

this should give you an idea of what to look for. The oval shaped ones are very comfortable. They may have vents, but I've never had dust problems with these types. I wear contacts, so is a pretty important issue...and I love cutting goggles

We bought the cool looking cyber goggles from Ebay. They looked great, but we got caught at the perimeter in a monster dust storm last year and even in the goggles our eyes were full of dust due to the small vents on the side. If you are serious about keeping dust out of your eyes in a storm wear swimming goggles - they will keep out all the dust. That's what I plan to do this year.. Good luck!

Or check your Yeller Pages for Safety Services or Safety Products or just Industrial Supply...'Round here there's a store simply called Safety Services which sell vast varieties of cool goggles, glasses, helmets, tyvek suits, wasp tape and other industrial goodies. I found GREAT retro hornrimmed safety glasses with sideguards last time.
Also try a search for "bubble goggles". Available for 5-6 bucks online in clear, amber, green. I've got clear for nighttime and green for day. Very lightweight, reasonable fit.

I've never done well with goggles, the ones that fit over my glasses suck, airtight ones fog up, and most of them are too bulky for my face. I am resigned to prescription glasses and a scarf.
