Coconut Juice /water
Someone told me that coconut water is great for hydration. Anyone ever used it on the playa? I drink it occasionally and always found it to be very refreshing.

Coconut water has been used for re-hydration and as a health and beauty aide in tropical regions around the world for centuries.
Coconut water is low in fat and calories, has no cholesterol, and has a natural balance of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium- making it a healthy electrolyte drink. It has even been used intravenously to stabilize electrolytes.
Many people know of the healing benefits of Coconut oil. Coconut water now joins the pantry’s medicine cabinet. Coconuts are anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. The lauric acid in coconuts is also used to heal digestive tract disorders such as Leaky Gut Syndrome.
According to ayurvedic belief, coconut is carminative: meaning that it helps to prevent intestinal gas, aids in removing toxins and increases the digestive tract’s ability to absorb nutrients. Coconut balances acid levels and flushes toxins out. Ayurveda considers coconut a natural stress-buster.

Coconut Juice or Water:
In your grocery it is the big white coconut all wrapped in cling wrap, carved into a weird cylinder with a cone top. Maybee 1/2 football size.
Carve offr the top cone with a sturdy knife then crack the round center to get to the juice.
Coconut milk:
The baseball size brown ball, all furry with brown strands. Crack open to get to the coconut milk.
Both are the same fruit but at different stages of maturity.
Coconut milk is a good laxitive so use sparingly.

coconut water was used in WWII tropical battle areas as a sterile source of water to mix drugs, and as an IV solution

I don't know if you can find it in "any" store, but places like Trader Joes and Whole Foods stock it in cartons. A good Asian grocer will sell it both by the jug and still in the coconut. Coconut milk is a common thickening agent in curries and most Thai dishes. It's definitely not for drinking, but I trust you would have figured that out the second you looked in the can.

Coconut water and coconut milk
I can find coconut milk at Vons with the Thai asian food. It's good for cooking. It has cream that separates to the top of the can.
But I get coconut water with some added pulp in 20 oz drink cans or 12oz bottles at the corner Mexican market. It have some added sugur to it, but its still very refreshing. Mexican store also has young coconuts with water content, but the coconuts can't be returned for recycling. I'm thinking about making a radio from them

Among my people the cream of the coconut is combined with pineapple juice and rum to create a very powerful relaxant and mood-enhancement beverage. It is reserved for royalty, so luckily for me I am King Of Robotland. I remember one occasion during which i was enjoying The Royal Beverage on the dunes of the cape when I suddenly found myself caught in the rain...after making love at midnight I was finally able to escape.

Actually, those are both coconut juice/water. Coconut milk is made by pureeing coconut meat and water together. What you skim is the milk. The meat is where the fat in coconut milk comes from.Token wrote:Coconut Juice or Water:

coconuts here suk, usually all dried out. they're better right off the tree. the "juice" or "water" is what you hear sloshing inside them when you give them a shake. if you don't hear that, don't bother buying the little brown bowling balls.
go here and read the last line:

if you really want it, buy the milk (expressed from the coconut pulp) in the cartons. shake well and guzzle. i love it.

some love it some hate it, you must must try it before buying a case : )
if your tastebuds only accept carbonation or alcohol in your beverages this stuff ain't for you.
this and orange juice cold are my playa favorites!
A&B is my favorite, the Mexican marketed brands tend to have more added sugar (though my cans here say both are a product of Thailand)

I don't know too many people who drink actual coconut milk. It's more for baking and curries. It's pretty unpleasant as a beverage and usual comes in a can.
Coconut "juice" or water can be found in most stores ( at least in Cali). I can get it at Save Mart, Raleys, Trader Joes, Winco, Foodmax, and Safeway. It is either in the Asian or Mexican food sections. I have also recently found it at the 98 Cent Superstore. It's usually in a tall can.

Milking coconuts is a HUGE hassle. Mine kept kicking the bucket over! Then one of the coconuts fell on my head and I lost my memory until ANOTHER one hit me on the head. Then I accidentally made fillings out of some plastic explosive that washed up on the beach and when I sneezed I blew a monkey clean off the roof of the hut. But that doesn't have much to do with coconuts.
