The Paradise Motel - DJ's and Sno Cones - Looking for DJs,RV

Post by Dr Dilemma » Sat Jul 19, 2008 11:24 am

Motel Paradise, a hotel "off Route 666" -- kitchy 60's hotel off of a highway, the kind of thing that's a slice of Americana. Otherwise known as a group of queer SF geeks first attempt at a (unofficial) Theme Camp. We are hoping with the magic of tarp, paper, EL 'neon', signage, blood, sweat and tears to transform a few tacky rental RVs into a tacky off the freeway Motel. The type you would never ever dare take out one of those CSI UV lights to... you don't really want to know. While none of us are uber artist types, we felt it was time to try to give something back to a community that has given us so much in the past. Now if only we could remember it....

This is a rough list of what we'd like to bring to the Burn this year:
  • Sound equipment and Trance DJ to entertain you.
SnoCone machine and tasty icy treats.
A fun place to come hang out.
Something thats at least a little visually stimulating.
Cheap hotel bar soap. You'll need it by the end of the week!
We could still use a little help with a couple of things:

First, we would like to find some other DJs that would like to spin. You can go to itpc://web.mac.com/dearjohn/Site/Podcast/rss.xml and play the latest set to get an idea of what we are looking for. If that link doesn't work for ya, try http://djstudlycaps.com/. I'll have our DJ / fearless leader post more specific requirements like what sound equipment and what not.

Second, we could also use another 25-30' RV to act as our third 'wall' of the 'Motel'. We have the 'stuff' to decorate it with ... we just need the wall! Oh and chill, queer friendly, doesn't mind loud trance, happy fun time people IN the RV.

Third, if long time Theme Camp - my blood runs with Playa dust burner types have any advice for us newbs ... constructive advice please ... we'd love it. We have a WIKI at http://djapplejohn.com/groups/burningman/ that we've set up to help us plan the thing. Yes, we are NERDS we do things like Wikis. But yeah, take a look at it if you think you'd like to be the third RV, might have some advice to give or are just really bored.

One thing we have to work out, seeing as we aren't an 'official' camp, we'll have to figure out where we want to try to set up. We know that we'll want to be towards one edge or the other because of sound, but not sure which one ...

Lastly, everyone please do try to look us up this year and have a tasty snocone and dance for a tune or two. If you bring a bag of ice, we'll have a special treat for you!

Hey Gents. I just looked at your site and plans. If I may a few thing I can share with you. Astroturf is a BIG MOOP source. It just breaks off the tips and makes a mess. Look at the thin carpet at home depot as a idea. I use carpet that gets tossed out. If you use Carpet. TAPE the edge with GOOD duct tape to keep it from fraying..

2nd. make sure you talk to you neighbors about your music and the 300 watt rule applies to your camp.
My came has given out over 6000 cotton candy in the years past.. Your sno cone will go over well... Have fun. 8) 8) 8)
I was Born OK the 1st Time....

Don't bring defaultia to Burning Man, take Burning Man to defaultia...... graidawg

Hi Guys,

I'm travelling from Austraila for this and will be bringing my lappy and serato and would love to play some tunes at you camp. I play quirky techno/minimal/tech house and a bit of DnB.
Let me know if you have a spare slot.
PM me to arrange..

Peas out

P.S. I'm Irish BTW, I just live in Sydney, OZ!

Thanx for the advice, sounds like you just saved us a mess to clean up. We made sure to buy more duct tape than you could use in a decade of Dore Alley's (obscure SF joke...) so I'm sure we'll have enough to do the astroturf.

We had planned on being on one of the outer edges, somewhere around 2:30 or 10:30.

Hi,
My name is Spacelotus and I am from SF. This will be my seventh burn and I am so excited for this year. I am a techno and house dj that was born in Detroit but raised in Chicago. I received and email from your camp. If there are any open spots let me know. I have tons of burning man experience and positive energy. You can check out one of my mixes at

OK this is why the 60 minute edit limit can bite you in the arse... yes meant to say 9:30 oops. We just know we'll need to be on one of the outer edges because we will be playing music, just need to decide which one! Of course I realize it all depends on who else decides to go to those spots. What would be really spiffy is if some other folks who are also doing an 'unofficial' theme camp might want to meet up and put theirs next to ours. Mainly we'd love to have something blocking the "still looks like a fugly ole RV" backsides where we haven't covered them in the pretty paper... oh details details!

We also now have a bed available in one of the RVs if there is anyone from SF that would want to join us.

We have our NV permit, mugs and enough syrup to do 5000 sno cones so looks like we are good to go on that front. Just need to find a good spot.

Oh we are still trying to work that out (or oot for you Canadians). In hindsight we should have registered, but this being our first attempt at a theme camp I think we were afraid work, health, lovely real life stuff might make putting this together just not happen.

We have 2 concerns, well more like 3... 1- being near an ice source, 2- not bothering people with our thumpa-thumpa and 3- not being right next to some one else with a sno cone machine. We were gonna aim for the 9 o'clock hole but then realised it would put us right next to the Cool Aid camp with their machine. And while they wouldn't beat us up, they would give us dirty looks. So I think we might aim for more towards the queer camps around 7:30 and 8 ish.

Comments and suggestions on placement are welcome, hehe constructive of course!

I know that doesn't help TOO much in finding the tasty treats, best thing I can say is look for the lovely sign!

I ran the Karma police camp in 2003, 2004, and 2005.

We gave away as many sno cones as we could make each after noon.

They were a big hit!!!

Nice! About how many did you end up going through? I'm bringing supplies for 5,000.

Not sure exactly, but we had lines of people each and every afternoon until we were tired of making them.

They stop being popular when the temperature goes down.

The issue we had was what to put them in. Styrofoam cups can be expensive and messy. Paper ones are better to deal with, but can also be a bit messy.

Have fun!

So looks like we have our third wall and are aiming to camp near Comfort and Joy if the space next to them remains open till we can get there Monday morning. So look for us around 7:45ish and F for a sno cone!

Remember bring some (sealed in a bag) Icd and get a special gift!
