Can Code Pink fight fires?

Post by ZaphodBurner » Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:40 am

July 10 (Bloomberg) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said his state is approaching a ``tipping point'' in its battle against more than 300 wildfires and needs federal help to turn the tide.

The state requires assistance, including from the military, after lightning sparked the blazes, which have been exacerbated by high temperatures and dry grass and brush, Schwarzenegger wrote in a letter sent to Republican President George W. Bush today.

Hope they get them out soon. We're sick of the brown skies in Nevada. When its cool in the morning you don't want to open your doors and windows like you would normally do. The local fire department where I live (Lyon County) has sent resources there.

Oregon crews are being sent down too. 'Course, we have fires burning in Oregon, but, that's California for you. The governor's calling for federal troops after the folks in Berkeley tried to run them out.

Last week we had the fire haze all the way up in Portland.

I am in the six rivers forest near Salyer and Willows working a fire and having a blast.

Theres crews from Oregon, Washington, Cali, Idaho, Nevada, British Columbia, Australia, Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Texas, et.al. wildfire fighting is a small community inreality. I recognize faces from all over the country every large fire I am assigned too.

Hey 007. Hats off to you and your cohorts. In the early 80s I took some fire science classes with hopes of getting in the fire service. To much compitition. I respect the work you're doing. Be careful.

Reno is still smoky as hell. Everyone seems to be feeling like crap these days. Hopefully they'll get a handle on it soon.

On a semi-related note, some asshole on the internet was saying that the fires in California are god's punishment for legalizing gay marriage. I'm gonna start making up facts based on things I feel like believing. It looks like fun.

Jezebelinhell -

Thats like saying god hates muslims for washing away Indonesia, or hates Mardi Gras for wiping out Norlens, or (pick disaster and place here with corresponding population)

SHit happens.

Why are there more fires in the last ten years? Many reasons. the biggest being that we as people have gotten damn good at putting fires out. Fires not some evil force incinerating the forest. Its a necessary component of forest ecology.

Many areas would burn every year, some every ten years and when it did at that rate the underbrush was knee high. No with hundreds of millions of acres that have not seen fire in more than a century, we have fuel loading that is so thick a bulldozer cant get through it.

Thats one of the biggest reasons fires grow to monumental proportions in recent years.

and oh yeah, global warming.

Population of Berkeley: 102,743
Population of California: 36,553,215

Quicky back of envelope calculation gives me 0.28%. I"m notorious for losing decimal places, so I'm not gonna swear to it.

Number of wildfires currently in Berkeley: 0
Number of wildfires currently in urban/wild interface populated disproportionately by California Republicans: Unknown, but hundreds.

Now, google yourself a number as to how much money the republican party raises in the world's 7 largest economy and think that you are an ass and an idoit, ZaphoidBurner.

Yes, hence the comment about making up facts. I want to find out when every major Evangelical event happens in the U.S. and then find something bad that happened on those days and use them as "proof" that God hates Evangelicals. The infamous Satan's Birthday Party website lists plummeting stock market numbers from the week of labor day as proof that god is punishing America for Burning Man. It must be nice to be so insanely religious that things like proof, science, and logic don't bother you at all. You can just believe anything you want.

Look at the Angora fire near lake Tahoe last year. That was a disaster waiting to happen and still is. Some of the 245 houses that were lost could have been saved if it were'nt THRP or TRPA or whatever that ass ostiation is up there that prevents home owners from removing dead pine needles from their property. One good thing about the recent fires in Calfornia is most were caused by lightning and not some whack job arsonist.

The Rogue Valley was really bad last week too... less than 2 miles visibility some days... still a little hazy now.

Apparently God is a whack job arsonist in this situation.

Who said anything about Republicans, Crypto? WTF does that have to do with anything? I'm not a Republican.

How come when I brought up whether Code Pink is pitching in to fight forest fires you brought up Republicans? Are you suggesting Republicans don't fight forest fires, or that only Republicans live in urban/wild "interfaces"? What's with the namecalling?

Update: Saw a big fire near Mt. Adams in southern Washington today, apparently just below the timberline, and caused by lightning.

All kinds of people called in from Portland to ask if Mt. St. Helens was erupting. Which is odd, because you can see Mt. St. Helens perfectly today and there's clearly no visual relationship between the smoke and the volcano. People are strange...

Presidents aside--I didn't vote for him--how does the fact that California elected a Republican governor make an Oregonian (I) an ass and an "idoit"?

This past past weekend it was smokey in Kennewick, WA. On Sunday going through the The Dalles caught a glimps of Mt Hood through the smoke. Yesterday was nice driving from Astoria to Bend. Today started getting into the smoke on Hwy 31 near Summer Lake, OR and was in it all the way home. Got a feeling it still might be smokey on the playa come August.

Not too many fires in San Diego county yet this year. Maybe all the fuel is gone from last year...
