First timer from Japan

Post by pizzamancer » Fri Jul 25, 2008 8:09 pm

I just purchased my ticket and should have a ride it by now. I was going to go to the 100 yen shop and pick up a bunch of Japanese looking stuff to gift, but looking at some of these threads it doesn't seem like the best plan.

I am now thinking:
-chop sticks
-Blinky LEDs
-Sake pitchers and glasses

That is the short list. What else would be a cool gift that people would actually enjoy getting?

I was gifted one of those cool hand held fans that fold up that are common in Japan. The gifter had drawn a burning man onto it. It is still one of my favorite schwag items years later.

You might consider some of those, appropriately customized. And Sake.

Stuff that is nice but hard to get here.
Fans, sake, weird unobtainable soft drinks.
Should be lots of stuff.

Someone gave me a nice fan last year made of wood with cutout patterns.
Maybe stuff that isn't too bulky so you can take enough?

You don't have to bring stuff, you know.
Nice though.

Sake is nice..and the one thing Ive found about gifts from Japanese burners,, is that their gifts seem more sincere..makes me feel guilty, so I get them drunk. I'll gladly accept any cultural Japenese gift,,,and give you a big fucking kiss. But then..gifts aren't always "things"...Happy Burn!

Gyre, the wooden fans aren't Japanese ... but paper fans are. Chopsticks, maybe a good gift, but are pretty obtainable here. Those little festival towels and headbands, now those are cool! And the little packs of tissues and all that weird candy in 7-11. Or the bizarre pens and notepads from the stationary shops.

I have a thing for shrine lucky charms, but that's not feasible, is it?

I lived in Yokosuka for 12 years (3 and then 9). I miss it quite a bit.
