fire at campsite

My camp mate has built a kind of fire ring-thing, hard to describe, but it is made of steel and decorated by using a plasma cutter. Very beautiful
He wants to have a fire in it ~~~like a hibachi, at camp.
My understanding is that this is not allowed.

To me, it seems too much a hassle, what with carrying out the ashes, not to mention bringing the wood in to begin with... and protceting the playa underneath...
But he really seems gung-ho to do this.
Survival guide addresses burning art at the designated spots, but not this.
I really don't want to waste precious space bringing this stuff to the Playa unless he can have his fire. Anyone know the official word on this?

Burn Barrels & Camp Fires

Camp fires are not permitted with the exception of designated public areas. 55 gallon steel drum "burn barrels" with legs, staked down against high winds, will be provided for some theme camps on the Esplanade. Groups receiving these will be asked to monitor their use and help with their clean up. Commercially manufactured type cooking equipment (staked down in case of winds) is the only acceptable fire sources for cooking within camps.

we have a burn barrell, our neighbor has a pit and gigsville has their car-b-que. just keep it off the playa and don't fry your neighbors camp...

I was at gigsville one year, and there were three guys throwing more wood on the carbeque. They were standing downwind, and they were getting ash and sparks blown into their faces.

One guy stopped and said, "Y'know, we're really stupid if we stand here to throw the wood in."

The other two didn't stop. One said, "We proved we were stupid Tuesday."

A few years ago there was a camp near ours with small fire ring/burn barrel. They all left their camp to go party and the fire was still smoldering. Some ash flew out and almost caught someones tent of fire.. the fire dept came by-- they didn't get in trouble, the fire dept actually helped them fix it so it didn't spew ash all over.

Sure they do, you just have to conk them on the head a few times so they will stay in the fire.

In simple terms. Fires, BBQs, burn barrels are fine.

If they are attended or are not making scars on the playa. If you are not paying attention, or are making a mess, you will get shut down.

It is mostly a safety thing.
