coconut oil is invaluable. it's cheap. good to cook with. good to grease up your cracked feet. it's wet and cooling in nature so whether you eat it or smear it on your body, it helps counter the effects of the dry desert heat. also, put just a tiny bit on the tip of your little finger and apply to your nostrils or lips to prevent and treat cracking. ghee also works for all of the above.

There's an incredible amount of myth and misinformation about absinthe. Thujone levels in modern (and accurate) absinthes are no lower than in "classic" absinth. It's been chemically proven. Even more interesting, it's been chemically proven by the chemist who went on to purchase a classic absinthe still and begin producing what is generally regarded as the best and most accurate absinthe around, Nouvelle Orleans. I highly recommend Mayans as well. La Fee makes decent absinthe, and Pernod is back in the business, though their absinthe is just okay.

Stay away from Czech absinthes. Not only are they foul, but Czechs began the bullshit custom of lighting the sugar cube. This ain't how it was done and it does nothing for the drink but burn the sugar and make it even that much harder to get a proper louche with ice-cold water.

So there's my snobby two cents' worth.

And my cheap & easy playa packing tip: Bring two two-gallon water jugs. When they're empty, slice the tops to make a flap lid. Keep these in your coolers. When you buy ice, dump it in these. It'll keep cooler stuff just as cold, and it'll be usable when it melts -- it turns out that molten ice is actually water! And when it melts in a nice clean jug, you can drink it!

Absinthe was never explicitly illegal in the U.S. I've bought it from Spain and France for several years. They DO wrap it generically, though, as (a) the law has been kind of fuzzy about it, and (b) so many people think it's illegal that it'd probably be seized anyhow.

I'm bringing some out as well. Is there an absinthe camp? If not, let's have a tasting party.

is imported legally, by a select few..never illegal to have or make..but curious as to th sudden interest in it this year
