That'd just make it about the cars........
How about a fleet of pedal powered golf carts buzzing DMV with fingers raised? ;)

Interesting thread.

As the event grows, more rules are implemented and I do largely place that blame on the BLM. They have continued to create more astringent requirements for BMORG. It sounds as if the DMV needs to revamp their rules and qualifications to meet the growing restrictions and give plenty of fair warning to all participants. Really, the DMV needs to weigh in on this issue before a witch hunt is organized. Without having both sides to present, how can one come to an educated conclusion?

If the current process is not being followed fairly, that's a whole other issue. I certainly don't think people should be grandfathered in; we should make way for new creative designs to have a chance at cruising the playa.

Honestly, I love seeing the vehicles out there, but I don't want the playa to be flooded with them. I like the encouragement to create vehicles that can carry others. It seems some art cars truly are personal vehicles and others are exclusive and not an open invite to the rest of the community.

With the population being what it is, art cars as transportation is really kind of a bad joke.
The layout of the city needs to be condensed and some kind of useful shuttle service would be a great idea.

As for small vehicles, my commute is over 4,000 miles.
Anything I build will be small.
I find the really great small cars especially surreal.
I think it's much more challenging to do something interesting with a small design too.
It's very easy to be splashy with a huge canvas.

And I support keeping some of the older art cars that many people will see for the first time.
If an art car can't be brought back, that guarantees the creativity put into them will be limited in the future.

It is already challenging to bring one.
Let's not turn them into toys for the rich only.

Damn.... I found this thread late in the game.

OK, dammit that sucks, Dr.Pyro, but could you provide link or paste photo here so that I can

your denial of Tieland ?

Yo oneeyedick: Go to the Theme Camps listing and pull up Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro. In our URL you will see our art vehicles, including Tieland doing it's best to incinerate much of Black Rock City. We always (used to) take it out on Saturday night after the burn and serve over 100 freshly-cooked hotdogs (with codiments) to hungry burners post-burn. But now the DMVNazis have decided that our bountiful contributions to Black Rock City are for naught. They think that some idiotic glowing head or some absolutely stupid cupcakes (how many people did they take to the burn? We had 18 people on Tieland) which in fact bring nothing to the event. So you guys will have to starve, the DMVNazis have deemed it so.

no offense intended, but you havent been attending burningman long if you think these things are isolated cases. the trend permeates everything, and nothing can be done about it outside of the org. if you dealt with them long enough you realize how futile that option is as well.

today, in the very rare case motivated people still attempt the responsibility to effect change, they realize it requires an incredible amount of effort and are discouraged when they fail. those are some great people, and it means burningman just looses another to the snarky and jaded dark side, so its usually best to avoid it all.

unfortunately thats the most educated conclusion, backed by repeated examples and accumulated experience.

I've found the org to not be unwilling to work with participants. I think sometimes their adheason to pointless rules for things that are within the spirit has been troublesome but the people you work with are burners too. If you're dealing with an asshole, look at the next guy and he'll likely be your angel if you'rer being reasonable. Like I said, they may need to you bend a little to fit the letter of the rules, but the generally give you the chance if you're willing to get through some red tape.

ART CARS

Post by RP » Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:20 am

True Stories, I was informed 2 years ago that if my highly decorated, painted and lighted cushman didn't have a fasad of some type it would not be admitted. I spent 3000.00 dollars on it!! and sold it for 800.00! BM's reason was "too many vehicles driving around for personal use, that's what bikes are for." I see others getting passed tech that shouldn't be, if that's the new rule and what about the motorized scooters??? Are they not for "personal trasportation"? Isn't that what bikes are for?? I get headaches thinking about it. Just one of the many problems BM should deal with. Dammit, where's the spell check?!

I'd like to make one big mother ship that didn't have to land on the playa so not permit that could hold 50,000. We could cruise the playa a couple laps then take off and never return.

The massive rejection you speak of sounds like it really sucks. Seems like it would inhibit creativity. Some people might have a pretty lame MV one year, but build on it, modify it, learn from it, and make it and their art more sophisticated as the years go on. It's a learning process. But what's the point if someone's telling you it's not good enough from the beginning?

I'm sorry to hear that this is a common and continual experience. This will be my 4th burn and I haven't run into any problems on the Playa with the structure/organization directly. However, I have had minimal interactions with the org aside from my volunteering; I have never dealt with the DMV. My response was based on what I read on this thread. I just always like to hear both sides of the story instead of relying on just one.

I'd love to hear someone who has experienced or witnessed these problems play the devil's advocate.

well, the days of devils advocate or alternative approaches to serious discussion are pretty much gone for other reasons as well.

ultimately, most dont want to have much to do with difficulty that harshes thier buzz. burningman is supposed to be fun, and not some serious minded phenomenon that impedes on a vacation. besides, people pay considerable money to have something provided for them, right?

I bet some of them do. Seems to me that this is a very tricky subject and a great illustration of why various negative attitudes form. No one is happy when they are told, "no," but no one is likely to change when they are called a 'nazi,' either.

Take the real need to limit motorized rigs on the playa, add in a volunteer work force who will be inconsistent in their applications of a decision making criteria that is more subjective than it needs to be, and combine a dedicated audience who is both convinced that their shit is cool and that 'the man,' is trying to hold them down and you get a nasty cocktail. If we took a moment to understand that and considered things from the POV of the org, as well as from our own tired and work drained position, the odds of an actual conversation go way up, IME.

Gosh Ron, there's an interesting misconception. The fact is that it is easier to say No than Yes. If you say Yes and something is amiss, you have to answer to it later. If you always just say No, then it's final and you don't ever have to explain why. You may be correct that calling someone a nazi could be construed as being somewhat extreme, but the people that run the DMV, probably being too retarded to become part of the DPW in which you have to register "legally brain dead" to even be considered, are not exactly whom I would call great thinkers. With the exception of the people in the flame-approval department, who I would like to say do an excellent job in both acceptance and accountability to safety, the rest of these people seem to suffer from headupassrosis.

Can we invoke "Godwin" yet? ;)

Ron, I argee, the setup is a recipe for exothermic reactions. Seems the DMV is getting their hands tied up a lot by the BLM and is having to jump through a lot of hoops to keep the BLM from shutting down the MV's altogether.
Granted I will see the other side of the coin in a couple weeks when I go to try to get tags for the ship... ;)

The DMV really needs to do the pre-approval process a lot earlier. There is not enough time between getting an OK from DMV and the actual event to build a MV. Otherwise you get stuck with starting the build and spending all that time and money into a MV before the pre-approval is even open, only to have DMV say no. Some of us build our stuff all by ourselves, and only have weekends and after work to get things done. Hell, I've effectively been building the ship for the last 3 years now...

And if they are saying no, how about a detailed reason why and suggestion as to what could be done to alter it to the standards needed?

There are easy ways to keep people from wasting their money, if the DMV would do them...

Except for the Man which will be on wheels and rolled around camp for all to see from their front yard. Then there will be no need for alternate transportation
