Absolute No Feathers? OH NO!

This is horrible!
I purchased an indian headdress for $100 especially for this...

on top of that i spent massive amounts of time on quality homemade hair fascinators and an outfit with feather detailing. theyre all very secure, but word is i cant bring that out there. I know this is to prevent things from falling off and impossible to pick up properly..

but do i really have to leave about 70% of my costumes at home now?

I've seen many costumes that look quite nice with 70% missing.......

Is the feather thing a real "rule"?.........or just a strong suggestion.......

The rule stems from Feather Boas which are notorious for shedding.

The problem with wearing feathers, even though you may have fastened them so that none can shed; there is now a stigma against feathers of any kind.

I say bring it and see how it goes. Also be prepared for folks to remind you that feathers are not allowed.

Bob... being snarky to idiot beggers and trolls is one thing, but being an ass to people with honest questions is just, well, being an ass. Lay off.

Gabbles, the problem isn't just whole feather shedding like boas, the bits of the feather from your headdress WILL shed, no matter what you do short of coating it in a block of resin. And as you know it is quite windy out there. It will shred that headdress.

Badger's quite right, that lovely headdress will die a horrible death from wind and dust. Cherish it and wear it to a Decompression party instead; leave it at home. Those floofy feathers are definitely going to MOOP. Even freakin' pheasant and peacock feathers create MOOP and they're sturdy.

You won't wear 70% of your costumes anyway. Really.

I'd say the problem isn't even that the little bits will shred. And they will. The problem is they're a royal pain to find and remove from the playa. They happily fly away in the wind, eventually to catch on a bit of playa. Once there they become buried by flying dust, or it rains and they become embedded. You can't see them unless you're right on top of them, and even then you can't if they're buried at that moment. Later on when the 10th person goes through that spot maybe they'll see it and have to spend several minutes trying to pick the little bits out and try to get them into a trash bag without them flying away again, repeating the process.

Even playa-colored cigarette butts are a piece of cake to pick up compared to feather bits. Spend an hour wandering the playa on foot picking up trash Sunday morning and you'll understand why this rule was created.

Attach them to your car. According to the DVM (I mean the government Dept of Motor Vehicles) the two things that can legally fly off a moving vehicle are water and feathers.

Yeah since this i decided the most respectful considerate thing to do was just to let my dream of feathers go. Ill be instead using that ilanio sort of stuff and other alternatives.

thanks everyone for making me realize its not the end of the world that I dont get to wear my headdress on the playa.
