Burning Man spin offs in England
Burning Man spin offs in England
Hi there,
I'm from London and we have a lot of really excellent festivals in the UK (like, really, really excellent festivals) including one called Secret Garden Party. I was just reading a recap of the event (here: http://spoonfed.co.uk/spooners/lowri-25 ... -2008-389/) which compared SGP to Burning Man (also called Burning Man "the greatest celebrations of human creativity on the planet") which brought me here. I think this sounds like such a brilliant festival and I truly hope I can go some day. I'm now going to be reading up on more festivals like this one as it's got a really great philosophy.
Cheers,
Noe

There are still tickets available for Burning Man 2008. If you read the first timers guide and get your airline ticket, there is no reason that you can't make it this year. It's over two weeks away and remember, the world was created in just a week!
Honestly, if this is something that you find fascinating, then 2009 should be well within reach. There are groups local to you that you can join, and camps you can become part of. The most important thing is that you really have to want to attend!

What!?!?
Lucky for you we have a weak-ass dollar and lots of booze. Hop that jet and get your self over here!No alcohol allowed on site – this includes the campsites. Searches conducted at the gate. Why? Why? Why?

NV is the decoy burn.
I take the article as a compliment. Coming from a county/group of people that seem to have a festival every 15 minutes it is nice that they bring up our little soiree. Even if they think it is in Arizona, which it is. The one in Nevada is just to get the LEO's out of town long enough so we can have the real party
If you make the Garden Party, I'd like to know what it's like.
From what I know about the UK, eccentricity has been turned into an art form there.
A party there might just match burning man.
I don't know what's up with the alcohol thing.
Maybe they want to guarantee high doses of other things?
Maybe just to keep frat boys out?
You'd probably like burning man.

Haha, I didn't even catch that about the wrong state... I just figured "way out west " somewhere! Yeah... good point about the weak dollar - can you try to keep it that way until next year's festival? ;)
Definitely take it as a compliment, we have a lot of festivals, and the one that article references happens to be my favourite which is why the comparison caught my eye.

Looks a bit rave-y...as if BRC were taken over by rave camps
Still looks fun.
I think the no alchohol thing is to support liquor sales at the event--the site says that there's absinthe bars and at least one restaurant..
Something I didn't like--a 'green tax' imposed if you've less than three people in your car. So you're penalised if you've no friends or if you're loaded to the gills or if you've got a small car. Maybe there's oversight, but it's a bad idea.
It's also set up for deliberate spectating
So, while it sounds like a lot of fun, it's also something to look at as a direction BM does NOT want to go in.
