URGENT: How big (width) are the side streets?

Post by machrisod » Thu Aug 07, 2008 6:21 pm

Our camp's art car is suddenly 37' across. a BIG plane. u can't miss us this year.
is this going to fit down the side streets? my memory says just barely, but i need some actual data. What's the width in feet of the side streets? (specifically 7:30 and Dart).
thanks,
-matt

I am not sure of the width of the streets, but I think 20 feet wide is the best you're gonna get. What the hell did you build that's 37 feet wide? You also have to take into consideration turning radius and narrower areas. You may be able to get to the open playa and keep the car there, but you have some serious logistics to deal with. Best of luck!

In a 2004 report most streets are surveyed at 30 feet wide with some major spoke roads at 40 feet. Note that many folks park in the designated street area like they do in default world. 37 feet is too wide to expect to move in the city streets. OPEN PLAYA ONLY. You will not get thru the streets and will block cars behind you who cannot turn around.

Do not do it, you will be forced to disassemble you vehicle to get thru after being cited for a safety hazard.

Most likely DMV will not give you a license.

I think that DMV will be very clear on the type of license you are able to get. Deep playa only.

Anything wider than 15' is not drivable in the streets.

I'm assuming much of the width is the wings. It might be too late, but is there any possibility of making them so they can fold up? That's really your only hope for a street license. I wouldn't consider playa-only much of a loss. Much of the cool stuff is taking place along the esplanade and outer playa anyway.

You said this was a big plane. There was another camp, Burning Sky, that had a plane for an art car. They had the wings on hinges and were able to raise the wings with some sort of winch. When they were on the city streets the wings were up and then on the open playa they were ready for "take-off" with the wings down. You may consider something like that.

As I look at the 'Official' non-public Maps....

The streets are 30' Wide. The Esplanade is 40' Wide.

You may want to re-think the wing-span of your Art Car.

Has this been approved at this size? I doubt you'd be able to cruise it even on the esplanade with all the bikes and people around. You'll be relegated to deep playa cruising only which brings up the question, where are you going to park this thing? You can't just leave it out on the playa.

You can solve the parking problem by camping along the 10:00 or 2:00 streets, somewhere way back.
You aren't allowed to drive on the Esplanade anyway.
There are logistics to handle, but it can be done, it sounds pretty cool!

As I read the thread I had a day DREAM.. I pictured a Playa airport, at least 3 actually 2 - 10 and 6 oclock.. where people could get a ride around the open playa, see the art.. then dropped off at the airport where either your bike was parked or other MV's would come by that can drive the city streets...joint effort (pun). disorganized transit system.. BRTD

What bout the transit "no fly list"? - would we have to deal with that in your dream airport?- How much for baggage checking? Security?

:D

The preceeding was an attempt at being "snarky" ....

according to a dude with the dmv almost nothing gets licensed for side streets over 15'. and the limit is probably closer to 13'. despite the streets themselves being close to 30'. in short, if you've got a giant rig make sure you apply for a camp spot on the edge somewhere. otherwise you're going to be stuck with a permanent open playa license at best.
