Wow! The contraption is a true work of art. I really hope we cross paths this year. I damn near get goose bumps just seeing the vid and pictures.

Yep! I saved that stuff I bought and it like a bunch of odd crap I have will come to the playa. Some of it will make someone's day and that makes it worth any price.

The Contraption is now absolutely my favorite Mutant Vehicle! I'm not one bit disappointed that steam isn't yet scienced out, I love that old engine!
While I loved it when I saw it on the playa, my first thought was "that thing needs a motor"!
Now it just needs me goin' for a spin on it!

It's dark now.. But this afternoon the spindels, tie rods and rod end were built and installed..

The steering bar is next..Bar strap is weak..So it will have a 180° swist at each end.. That should stiffen it enough..

Ready to cut and install some drive chain.. The bike store held me down and fucked me at 5$ a copy for master links.. A year ago I could get three for $1.80 at G I JOes. Hope this thing runs..

Well, I just painted the Land Yacht... it's all white now, no stripes... I always hated those red and blue stripes it had. And it has more lights.

My driveway is white now too. And some of the grass. And my fingers. And my arms.

Hey! unjon! Even though you're lower than a snakes' ass in a wagon rut, I sent you a PM that you haven't replied to... get on it! I need to know where you'll be so I can come by and get you and your friend. (I can't believe someone as ugly as you has friends... )

Sweatin' my butt off and trying to work in the evenings on the guards for the spinny bits. Got some "you gotta wait 'til the playa to see it" stuff done too.

Quickly digs out the red cold cathode tubes...

In other news, if I never solder another solar cell again, it will be too soon...
Image
What you can't really tell from the pic is that that center stack of cells is about 80 high still... *sigh*
Also it doesn't show every flat horizontal surface in my house covered in soldered sets of cells.

I love the fact that you guys are out there, all across the country, working on your own custom mutant vehicles just like I am, all very different yet with the same purpose and destination.
Most people out on the playa have no idea the hours of work and amount of backyard engineering that goes into these contraptions... but I know you guys here do!

Gyre,

Maybe we can take that train to the playa?

I hear the tracks aren't too far from the city.

Getting off the train seems to be the issue.
