scooters and such

Post by sbjody » Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:22 pm

Current rules:

Small motorized scooters (two wheeled, lightweight, standup, small, no-seat, off-street type) and go-peds are allowed in Black Rock City but they are subject to the same rules as any other motorized vehicles - drive 5 MPH and have front and rear lights at night. BLM Rangers will issue citations for non-compliance.

Was this made in thoughts to eliminate gas power (skateboards)?
I cant see why its limited to two wheels.
I have found my skateboard to be quieter, safer. and more reliable than two 2 wheel scooters.

If there is no seat why put a limit on the amount of wheels?

Actually, it was to prevent Vespa type scooters. I don't think anyone was thinking of gas powered skateboards at the time. I've seen plenty of the skateboards running around. Not so much at night. They won't be a problem until someone runs one into a mutant vehicle or tent and someone gets hurt badly.

Because if you worked at the DMV you'd see that there are some really odd things that people want to drive on the playa without a license.

In terms of motorized skateboards, they're relatively new and so the DMV hasn't really taken a look at them to determine if your claims of safer are true. And technically, until that happens, motorized skateboards aren't legal at Burning Man. That said, we aren't requesting that the Rangers or the BLM enforce this particular point, so while it is possible you could get cited, its unlikely.

You can swing by the DMV whenever they are open?

Also, now you got me really curious! What has more than 2 wheels and no seat???? Pics?

Well, ok, I have something that has 3 wheels and no seat, but mine is mutant, and one of a kind, so I'm wondering what yours looks like! haha

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm stoopid. Re-read your post, and I'm assuming you have one of these bad boys:

You should be ok, I had one out a couple of years ago, and see a few every year. Just don't ride too fast, don't create dust clouds and you should be ok. Hopefully JRoyale will chime in again, but as far as I know, neither the DMV nor the BLM will give you more than dirty looks for riding them.

And, for good measure, here is my board. His name is Thingama Bob.

Thats bad ass.
And that's what I meant by, why does it matter how many wheels it has.

But yeah my main concern is pulling up to the gate and some one in a bad mood and a stickler for rules looks at my board and says sorry. no more then two wheels allowed.

Here is a pic of the scooter I brought 2006.

RED ROCKET! RED ROCKET!

lol. That thing is bad ass! Not bringing it this year?

As for the skateboard, I understand what you mean, but I think you'll be fine. I don't think they are regulated, and mostly piggyback on the scooter rule....

My advice would be to stop by the DMV during the event and ask to speak with Od Wally, he's the dept. head and he's the one you really need to convince.

That's good enough to get a license.

Just sayin'.

Oh yeah! Just speaking as a regular civilian participant, that's the kind of thing I WANT to see buzzing by! And that, I believe, is the spirit of the DMV rules.

I wouldn't do anything you wouldn't let your 10 year old kid do.

Even well riding my red rocket scooter I was stopped by rangers three times, one nearly resulting in them loading it into their truck and taking it away.

Scooters are just plain frowned upon, and driving one with a beer or under the influence would not have a good out come for anyone.

Basically if you take one go slow and be courteous.
