Early Arrival Passes
I know this is rather late, and should be archived in a few days, but have any of the theme camps/villages received their early arrival passes yet? Wheeeee!Ville, along with Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro, were told that we would have our passes yesterday (Wednesday, the 13th) but have yet to hear anything. Are we all alone (read: screwed) or are others in the same boat. It would be just my luck the same people who are handling this are the same ones who judge the playa-worthiness of Mutant Vehicles

...heheee
yeah, who wants to pay good money for early arrival bar codes so you can go in and work your ass off.... litteraly!!!!!!!!!! oh and this includes a wonderful case of med tent dehydration too, but dont answer now, cause you also get "so tired you cant party for the first 36 hrs" and least we not forget, the hold up at the gate because apparently someone got the same group of Bar code#'s so now it seems you look like you stole someones or duplicated them.
why cant we just go back to names?
That would be ever so much easier.

Oh yeah I hear they’re treating rangers like theme camps now, just like a camp can have people get in early to erect them and set every thing up Rangers can have people get in early to, Um well see to their erections as well.Badger wrote:Maybe if you could be a little bit more specific so's not to make it sound like a Ranger is getting you in early by virtue of him/her being a Ranger.I heard from a friend that their camp hadn't received theirs yet. I have mine; but I'm coming in with a ranger.
Please?
The fact is that the tightness on early arrival is costing many people their ride, sometimes the people with the passes, sometimes not.
It is a very serious issue for those coming from further away.
Without early arrival, I would have lost the only viable ride from this area for me or been stranded somewhere until the gates opened.
I doubt that's the intent, but it is the result for many people.
My first year, if they had been this strict, I could not have attended at all because I rode in with someone coming in early.
There are not that many rides coming from here.
Even from San Francisco, it took several tries to find someone whose schedule meshed with my entry.

Being the ride and infrastructure, not just sleazing in. Trust me, we'll be working our asses off for "our" rangers.
The serious issue has been lack of coordination and preps by the camps more than any log jam created by the ticket and gate staff. That's not to say that there haven't been problems with them that needed ironing out. Anecdotally I'd say - from my experiences - that fully 90% of the problems that arise are from bad choices and assumptions made by the camp registrants. Lack of EARLY, clear communication by camp contacts with their minions and little or no coordination AND verification have created lots and lots of problems - especially over the past two years. I don't see that changing this year because there'll still be those arriving with NO clue and others who believe (incorrectly) that if they act enough like an asshole that they'll get their way.The fact is that the tightness on early arrival is costing many people their ride, sometimes the people with the passes, sometimes not.

Desert dogs drink deep.
The gate won't notice the people who plan ahead, because they are still stuck in San Francisco, which is not such a big deal.
Those stuck in Zanesville may not have another chance at a ride though.
And it's no fun to be left in Reno or anywhere else to camp out until the gate opens.
The first year I made it out, I would not have been able to attend if I had not been able to go in with the theme camp I rode out with.
There were no other rides available.

last year 3/4 camps i knew had serious problems with the whole early arrival thing.
problems ranged from passes sent via email that were spam filtered, loosing track of names and camps, camp leaders being told confusing or conflicting things, placement leads mistakingly telling people to just show up and it will get all worked out when they arrive ... but the biggest problem iwas little response from placment in telling people whats up.
granted, placement was virtually drowned by the record number of theme camps to be worked out and such, and i am sure that had a lot to do with it, but by my account the camp leaders and/or people designated to deal with it were not the ones at fault.
far fewer problems with art based early entry, so i think its important to note they handled it different and completely separate from the placement group.

its bad when you get associated with early entry scammers just to beat yourself to death to help get things done with not enough time. fuck that, others dont appreciate it. so i just tell people to screw the system or get hooked up with someone on the side. not like it matters anymore since you're going to get bitched at anyways by some gate pusher with an authority attitude who's probably rightly pissed that he's out there sweating his ass off dealing with people trying to scam him.

I appolgize Badger. We've known each other for awhile and you know I can be an asshole at times. It's just that this whole ordeal is so frustrating with no recourse is what pisses me off. If a village like Wheeeee!Ville can't get a few miserable passes, then who qualifies? Our villagemates expect me to have the village mapped out as far as which camps are where, make sure that there is room for emergency vehicles to get in and out, make sure that other campers, perhaps just newbies and their collective naivete, don't camp within village limits, etc. Unless someone is there by Saturday evening, none of this can be done. But the Goddamn BMOrg gives us no place to appeal or to vent our frustrations, except in a useless forum like this.
I certainly don't blame you. Given your play-byplays surrounding this debacle I think you have every right to be pissed off. And though my observations come more from an inside perspective I think Spectabillis comes to the table with a perspective that's just as valid and (I imagine) pretty damn spot-on as well.I appolgize Badger. On some levels I think you get to see the cracks here in having an discordant, overwhelmed system that has become too reliant on volunteers. Decision making processes aren't always vertical (in the good sense) and decisions are often enough conflicting within a group as some people focus more on their little fiefdoms and less on their role within the collective. Communication (or lack thereof) continues to the the Achilles heal as well. But you obviously know that seeing as you and your camp are currently suffering as a result.

to be fair, despite my personal experience, i have heard from others who didnt have a prob last year.Badger wrote:And though my observations come more from an inside perspective I think Spectabillis comes to the table with a perspective that's just as valid and (I imagine) pretty damn spot-on as well.
the frustration on my part comes from being anal-retentive-organized and not catching myself when i expect others to be the same, which isnt fair to volunteers. the difference is when my side gets blamed for not having their shit together, so unfortunately i am very vocal when correcting that.
frustrations this close to the event always comes to a head over problems as anxiety rises in everyone. i can usually understand groups like placement and dmv and will tell them how i appreciate the work and putting up with a bunch of crap, because those who volunteered know wtf i am talking about. but when you run into the power trip thing, my gloves come off.
