Try Home Depot, They'd be happy to help you out.

Where do you plan to plug it in? (100mi extention cord to Reno?)

I see you are in Oregon, will you be coming this way? (click link below)

Just stack a bunch of Gatorade bottles and shine a flashlight through them.

If anyone is looking for illumination, now is the time to slide to the edge of your chair and pay attention. This is especially true for newbies.

Every large store chain, including Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Target etc. will be clearancing out all the outdoor Christmas lighting. Lowes is now at 50% off and Target is 30% as of today, but it will drop to as much as 90% in the beginning of January.

I buy lots of battery operated strings of LED lights and use them for lighting our eating area, tents, draping ourselves and bikes as well as gifting them to darkwads. One set of batteries lasts for the entire week and still has power for the next year. One color rope lights are always great for stringing around the camp, and if they are LEDs, then a small power inverter will run them from a car battery. For BM, I always avoid things that appear Christmasy, and stick to things we can make work with any playa motif! Twinkling colored lights don't work for me, but this time of year you can get everything cheap with holiday sales being so crappy.

I've seen really good post-xmas sales on rope lights and LED xmas lights at Ace Hardware. It seems to vary quite a bit by store, so check all your local shops. The discounts get higher over time, but of course the selection goes down.

I first bought LED Christmas lights ten or 12 years ago and was sorely disappointed. They shine a bright beam in one direction, almost like a laser pointer, and are near invisible from all other directions. Has the technology improved?

Some of the really cheap LED lights still do that, but the nicer ones have bulbs that spread the light out pretty well. Rope light is superior IMHO though, so if you can afford it I'd get that.

Thanks. I'm guessing the LEDs that spread the light better must look a bit different -- I'll take a peek in the stores right after Christmas.

I've had some failures with rope light. Seems the wires inside are awful fragile. But I sure like them when they work. The ones I have are for 110 volt, though.

Merry Christmas, all over the World!

Right, forgot about the fragile part! We did have some failures in a free-hanging rope light that was knocked around by the wind. High quality LED xmas lights may be more reliable when they're subject to a lot of flexing. Or maybe just stick to some other solution if you can't keep them steady.

I had great luck with LEDs lights. I wrapped my art car with white rope lighting that had a cascading effect and was able to control the speed with a knob on it. At 90% off, these lights were just $2.50 a section. Needless to say, I bought a shitload (is that a real word?) of them. REMEMBER KIDS, AVOID GLASS BULBS AND LED LIGHTS WITH A GLASS COVERING ON THEM. WINDY CONDITIONS AND GLASS ON THE PLAYA ARE BAD---REALLY BAD!

Another playa tip, (I feel like fucking Martha Stewart, (well, not actually fucking her)) buy a warm nighttime coat or jacket at the end of the season and permanently attatch battery powered LED light strings to it with either safety pins or stitch them on. You can get really creative and poke the LEDs through the fabric and hide the battery pack in a pocket. With so many small lights facing in every direction, you can be seen in even the worst whiteout conditions. I have used 2 strings of LED lights and soldered them together to work off one battery pack. I think that's 40 LEDs off 4 AA batteries and it lasts the entire week.

Gosh, golly---I love LEDs! :D

a local XScargo has already begun boxing week sales of christmassy crap.

7ft plastic trees, wreaths, light strings (glass only), and more for only a 1$ EACH!

If i dont find any cheap leds, maybe ill just set up a small grove of pine trees on the playa, and give the local furry critters somewhere to roost?

(offer applies only to non-humans, with a mass of less than 20kg. people with a furry fetish will be denied access)

Elliot, I used LED lights that were round bulbs and they were very visible from all directions, although I did have to dust the bulbs off every so often, for the life of me I'm not sure why :D

Sham, don't worry bout your grammer, in our little world shitload is most def. a legit word. So, while I am trying in earnest to get the picture out of my mind of you fucking Martha Stewart (who BTW looks pretty hot in her revealing french maid outfit, or was that you, I'm not sure, the pictures a little fuzzy) :P I did have a question. Are the glass encased ones marked as such? I also like your idea with the coat, that sounds pretty cool. I can't wait for the after x-mas sales so I can add to my collection. To bad the big box stores haven't caught onto EL wire yet, I'd love to get that at discount as well :D
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

I'm told the furniture store IKEA carries some EL wire, seasonally. But I'm so disappointed in the EL wire I have, that I'm not pursuing that.

OK. My old LEDs look pinched flat at the tip. Will look for round ones.

Sanding the tip carefully might help, or reshaping and polishing.
They make wide angle LEDs, up to 160 degrees.

There is the tiny groundmoose.
They can be shy around crowds though.

I was able to enlarge the type and read what you wrote about Martha Stewart. I feel so dirty now. {(who BTW looks pretty hot in her revealing french maid outfit, or was that you, I'm not sure, the pictures a little fuzzy)}
The coat is a cool idea and buy that in the spring when the retailers are trying to dump the winter stuff. Remember, lots of pockets and something medium weight. The glass covered LEDs are labeled LED but have a large globe on them. You have to just check carefully.

Crap!! Mine are globular in nature, I'll have to check them out rather closely.

No need to feel dirty, that's what wipey dipes are for  At least Martha's "Kinda" cute. It could be worse, we could be referring to Rosie O'Donnell

I'm adding the coat idea to my master tip list, it's a bodacious idea :D

I found the most amazing string of LED lights that are powered by 4 AA batteries. 18 large LEDs that fade to the entire full spectrum of colors in continuous motion. They all start off as red and slowly change at different speeds and end up changing colors all randomly. The retail is $10 at Target, but they're pratically giving them away now.
Walmart has LEDs this year, but they are really crappy. They are small lights with no motion and they run on 3 'C' batteries--too heavy to keep in your pocket at night. Another reason to hate Walmart, "shitty LED lights"! :(
