I found a good deal on goggles, bought 6 pairs, same with sunglasses, and, am brining 25 dust masks and a new pair of contacts for every day...........

It's all easy to bring, but, a bummer to not have..........

Email today from someone on the playa:
Though I knew it would be dusty this year because of the sparse winter
rains (this has been discussed on this list last month), I don't think
anyone anticipated that the surface would be this soft. I'm sure it's
possible to get around without buying new tires, but it may require
walking short distances and searching for harder packed surfaces.

There are gas and diesel vacuums, including ride on models suitable for an art car base.

dust on your glasses

Post by vic » Mon Aug 18, 2008 9:48 pm

IF I am going to see much, I have to wear glasses. It's not bad when you get used to it. and after a while you forget you have them on. But there are problems with dust. I remember going into Patty Mirage a few years ago, when they had built an enclosed pub in the form of an ancient tomb. I came in out of a dust storm expecting relatively clear air, but it was just as dusty. 20 minutes went by before I realized that the air was pretty clear, I was just looking through a thick coat of dust on my glasses.
Same problem with goggles of course.

I have a jar of playa dust from the 2004 burn in my pantry. I sometimes add a pinch to my morning coffee. MMM MMM good!

What happens to goggles on the playa? :|
The dicktard next to you who forget his/hers borrows yours (and never seems to return them)...or you're just so addle-brained with sleep/food/water deprivation that you keep losing them.
So, I guess that means I'll have to leave my dicktard at home...Shit.
We all have to go through what we gotta go through to get to where we are going.

Aren't dicktards what people used to wear under their shirts as a sort of fake turtle neck sweater?

On Monday there was an accident on playa. One of ours was driving.
There were four people in the SUV that flipped over.
This might be the vehicle:

If a dicktard is a leotard for your dick, I guess it's basically a condom.
Which has everything to do with how dusty it's gonna be this year.

Definite BRC Ranger Style vehicle. Note the circle on the door where the logo attaches. Looks like it took a broadside on the left. Looks consistent with a flip of some kind.

We don't pull out the Sunday morning. We'll spend that night at friends in Tahoe. Then hit the playa Monday morning.
We'll be in Hushville, at the end of Hushville St D.
Come by and get a copy of my album, and a kazoo.

Email today from someone in Gigsville:
Weird but true. Turns out I've got relatives in the BLM in Nevada.
Bryant Smith is my mother's cousin. I don't know what that makes him to
me but we met at last summer's reunion and connected talking about the
desert and as you might imagine Burning Man. Well he got ahold of me
last week and told me about the weather and the dust but also said that
the number of complaints from the Gerlach locals about dust innundation
from the event this year was phenomenal. They had relocated the event
a bit further north this year to limit that and other problems but the
dust storms the city is kicking up are unprecedented. Law Enforcement
is being told that the Nevada's public health agencies may require the
event be shut down Wednesday if BRC LLC is unable to adequetly address
the dust issue and complaints persist. It's not going to keep me away
from the event this year but it'll suck mightily if my rather expensive
vacation is cut short by this. I asked why "Wednesday"? What makes
Wednesday so special? BLM and BRC LLC want to give the event time to
get the infrastructure up to speed and see how the road watering and
other dust efforts perform with the full population. BRC LLC is
basically going under the assumption that BLM won't shut the place down
once full but my cousin says that's definitely not the case. BRC will
not be permitted to make an actual inhabited town uninhabitable. So
cross your finger.

Maybe Gigsville can just go to one of the small playas just south of
Silver Springs if the chase us all the fuck out. I don't know. I guess
we'll figure that out if we have to.

I really don't see them chasing everyone out on Wednesday........knowing how some there resist authority........and I'm sure they know that, too.......
I can't imagine them being prepared to arrest, or whatever, that many people, many armed, some in "altered states", etc, etc.........

I'd think the more likely scenario would be not to re-new the permit for next year..........
Can you imagine how they'd even tell everyone to leave?
Sky writing?............fliers on each camp? and, how do the make sure everyone gets notified, and, explain, etc?
and, if they think the dust is bad that day, imagine trying to get everyone out at once.........when it's usually over a few days time we all leave........

Seems it'd be logistically impossible, short of calling the National Guard and marching across making every one go in front of them........and, that won't happen......

Probably just a "threat"...........or posturing for an actual change in the permit, or not giving another.......

that's just my
Image though

Ok. I made a deal with one of the other fingers, and if the finger finds out, I'm dead. Now what?

Is it all the traffic on the access road that causes the problem?
