Performing Arts At Burning Man

Post by Zephryus » Sun Mar 07, 2004 3:23 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a question for the more experienced burners out there.
I'm a virgin burner who just stumbled upon this community whilst perusing the BM website. I'm going to the burn this year, and one of the most frequently given pieces of advice I read is "make something and bring it. Preferably several somethings". Which is cool and all, and something I could definitely get into, were it not for two things.
First, I'm halfway around the freakin' world, and I'm not coming back in time to do any serious craftwork. And shipping is mighty expensive.
Second, I'm really a performance artist, not a visual artist. I do clowning, dancing, melodrama, demagoguery, juggling, slapstick and other fun things. I'd really love to give what I'm best at, but I've never been to a venue quite like BM. So my question is this: What performing arts go over well at Burning Man? If you see people making an organized spectacle, what sort of thing makes you want to stay (or leave)? How does the environment affect the overall energy? Are there some people I should be talking to that I don't yet know about? (Besides the Fire Conclave. I've already emailed them.) Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

most of em - there are a large number of people who only go for the big spectacle, but there are also plenty who treasure the small spontaneous performance or out of the way cool thing that only those who are at the right place at the right time get to experience.

be careful, though. if your "performance art" consists solely of being a dick to everyone around you (which seems to happen on occaision) you may not be as welcom ed as you like. but i don't get the imprssion that's what you were talking about.
