Please Help!
This is my first trip. I've rented an RV and will be arriving on the 26th with wonderful friends. I've also rented a large tent, astroturf, a swamp cooler, and a generator from a local vendor in Reno. He says that he needs to know what "address" I'll be at in Black Rock City, that spaces are assigned something similar to addresses since there is no cell service. How shall he know where to set up my camp? I can't find any reference to that anywhere. Please help! I'm looking forward to meeting you all (or as many of you as possible! :-)

Addresses...
Are you having the RV delivered to the Playa ?
As far as an address goes, hopefully you have read the survival guide and know about the Esplanade, Theme camps , Hushville and the like. These are places you won't be able to camp. Reserved or in the case of Hushville generators not welcome.
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/08_maps/
Other than that you can guess where you might wind up; the unreserved space closest in gets filled up fast. If he or you are getting there first you can choose a camp moniker; like ApenCloud or
anything will do. Go to the kind folk at Playa Info and register in the computer database directory. Than who ever arrives after can look you up. Be sure to give precise directions including which side of the road, how far deep etc. Down Town Black rock is pretty dense population wise and one RV or tent starts to look like any other. As an emergency backup, like in case the computer server gets struck by lightening I would also leave the info at an accessible person's phone # off the playa. If the computer datbase is disabled, you will have to get a ride a few miles off playa to get to a phone, but at least you will be able to "call home".
There are written bullitein boards as well where you can leave a note, but I wouldn't trust anything there not to get covered up, blown away etc etc.

Almost forgot....

Almost forgot, you can always have whoever sets up leave a note at my secret hiding space, under the Skull Cap of The Man. Just take the elevator up to the top during one of the free site seeing tours , take the last set of stairs to the very top and slip your hand under. Please leave the other notes there ; I am expecting my boss to send my paycheck C.O. Black Rock City Post Office and have it left there as well..

Right, spaces are not assigned except for the larger theme camps and villages. I wish I had a good suggestion, and I am surprised the vendor doesn't know this. Try several streets back, on G or H, and oh, 8 or 4. Decide, then hang out there? Leave a note at playa info and see if the vendor is willing to check there for the address? Borrow a sat phone form a generous person?zorro sings wrote:You may as well add satellite phone to your shopping list. There is no way, short of joining a theme camp,to have any idea of what free space or address will be available on Tuesday.Best of luck.

Vendors....
Aspen, You are getting some flack because the idea of a vendor providing an instant camp; especially one that didn't know or advise you about addresses etc. goes against the grain and belongs more at Coachella Music Festival than at BM. Come on folks, let's welcome the newbies. And Aspen, , something simple like coming with your dream of an original, home made costume is an easy way to feel at home and get into the swing of things
(easier and more practical than doing an elaborate theme camp for a newbie). See ya.....

In case that's directed at moi', LOL, I'm seriously not trying to give this gal flack. It's unfortunate that the RV rental company gave her misinfo and she didn't know any better. It happens, I 'spose.
I just don't think that personally I could handle the angst of trying to meet up, via a bulletin board or a post at center camp, with someone who had my living quarters for the week that I was indebted to for several grand. I'd also be nervioso about if it would take half a day (or more) to meet up and the dude would give me an extra charge, and maybe rightfully so! I don't know about the in's and out's of RV rental.
Maybe she needs the guy to set it up for her. I can understand that.
To the poster above who suggested meeting at the gate, I had that same thought in my mind, but not having been to BM yet (and I will be waiting for 2 years to get funds together, and learning in the interim), but I don't know if they have space there. It would be great if other BMers who know could answer this question.

Meeting up at the gate could be nightmarish, but the vendor could pull into the will call lot. Better than making him hint for a maybe camp site.
I know the newbs get annoying, but really, an explanation of why they are being so annoying or misguided or flat wrong should precede the snark. I don't want to see one more "they're being mean" PM in my inbox.

True 'nuf, AntiM, but the desert is a lot meaner than the posters here. AspenMirror needs a backup plan in case things fall apart. She and her friends will get on just fine without generator, swamp cooler or astroturf, but they do need ropes and tarps for backup shade.AntiM wrote:I know the newbs get annoying, but really, an explanation of why they are being so annoying or misguided or flat wrong should precede the snark. I really appreciate all of the information everyone, yes, even the snarky comments. :-) The RV is actually coming from Las Vegas. We're driving it up, I'm sorry that I wasn't more clear. The tent, swamp, etc are coming from Reno and it looks like the vendor is going to meet me in Reno and drive in with me. Thank you all, again, so very much!
