I've heard of it being done, but almost everyone will tell you it's a bad idea. Very hard to keep your new tat clean and out of the sun. It's hard to keep anything clean and out of the sun @ Burning Man.

I've seen people who've gotten tattoos on the playa - duct tape over the new tat.

Have an allergy to henna? You might get a permanent tattoo that way.

ooohhh, bad BLACK Henna reaction! Don't use that stuff ever! The natural henna I like.

(from Phil's link:
Natural henna vs. black henna:
While true henna is made from harmless plants, black henna uses a chemical called para-phenylenediamine, or PPD, which makes the tattoo dry quickly and last longer — and in some cases, that’s much, much longer.

I've seen the brands. I've heard the screams. I have no idea who was doing them during the burn, but I do know DPW had a brand at one point during the 4th of Juplaya some years back. Sounds like a freaking horrible idea if you ask me.

henna

Post by PDX Burner Gurl » Sat Aug 16, 2008 1:22 am

I am doing henna again this year on the playa. My camp is at 3:30 and J. Look for a live size cardboard of Jarred the subway guy. It won't be permanent but its still fun. I will also be visiting the post office and barbie death camp but I dont have a time frame for that. want henna... find me before noon at my camp!

I am not ure about getting ink on playa - hard to keep clean and un-infected.
Scarification and branding is even more prone to infection.

A guy pulled up in a big moving van two years ago. He was doing ink in the van. Didn't much care for his style, although he seemed to do good work.

As a tattooer...one who's with a reputed shop....please please please DON"T GET TATTOOED ON THE PLAYA
-How is someone get an autoclave out there (would they really bring enough pre sterilized tubes, grips, bars, needles etc.?)
-DUST DUST DUST EVERYWHERE. you can't keep it out of your clothes, your food, any electronics. It would be a big task to pack everything individualy in baggies to bring all that crap
-GETTING TATTOOED IN A DIRTY ENVIRONMENT=BAD
-Risk of sun damage (the first two weeks your tattoo is most sensitive to light, just a couple seconds in the sun)
-If its sunny it's probably hot, and if your having as much fun at burning man as i do then your probably sweating. 1. salt in open wound =pain 2. sweat pushes out ink
-On top of sweat getting in the open wound dust will too...

overall it sounds like a pretty un-fun experience to me.

for those of you who have gotten tattooed on the playa or think I'm full of crap , unless it is by a professional who brings everything, you have/are putting yourself at a GREAT HEALTH RISK.

just so you know.

Have fun....save your money for a good shop back home...Burning man happens once a year....tattoo's can happen whenever.

hey man thanks for the advice! From what I've gathered, getting tattooed on the playa is bad ju-ju. If anything I'll wait tell the last night and get a brand. I've gotten one before and didn't do shit to clean it or anything and it turned out fine. Thanks everyone for your input.
