gifting alcohol

Post by misskitty » Fri Aug 22, 2008 1:56 am

I'm a first year burner and I know gifting is not needed and I read about how a gift economy is often just about helping out. However, I have been thinking about what I can offer.

I have a huge collection of various mini (50ml... or 1.5 oz I think) alcohol bottles that was cool at some point... I don't drink a lot now and they take up space in my home. Liquor laws here make it impossible to give away - so my options are to dump and recycle or hold on to them and drag a bunch to house parties when I go. I have literally hundreds and hundreds of them... some are very obscure liquors, some are common hard liquor and some are good shots. I was thinking I could bring them... have a bike bar (it would be a good way to make me meet people since I'm going alone and don't know any burners there) but I'm concerned about a couple things:

1. Are tiny bottles of liquor appropriate? If I offer to take the bottles back for recycling?
2. Should I bother with obscure liquors or do people drink anything that's free? To use some of them "properly" it would take a very skilled bartender.
3. Do I need a vending license for alcohol?
4. Without a selection of mixes are these best gifted to a established and prepared bar? Would they even want them? (I imagine the larger the bottles the better)

As you said, gifts are not required. My thought is that the more common or usable liquors can be given to adults, but it will be your responsibility to make sure that the younguns don't get their sweaty mits on them. There are lots of bars there as well, so you can pass some on to the bartenders, as they are always running low toward the end of the week and will happily accept bottles to make creative drinks.
Just keep in mind the "empty bottle moop factor". Each drink will generate one bottle that someone has to schlep out of the city.
You may also consider some hand drawn artwork on each bottle to make each one a special gift. Nothing says "I love you" like a nip bottle of Seagrams 7!

And then there's those of us who like to collect the cute little bottles and would never send them to a landfill, they go home and happily collect even more dust.

I would be insanely stoked to receive a mini-bottle of obscure liquor on the playa. I say go for it.
