Haha. I was thinking yesterday that I wanted to start a thread like this so I could experience this year's event thru others (again). :)

Excellent first time experience

Post by teef » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:56 pm

I only spent two nights (Tuesday and Wednesday) on the playa, but it worked out perfectly.

While looking for a place to park I ended up driving on the Esplanade. A Black Rock Ranger politely explained why this was kind of a party foul, told me where to turn off, and traced a heart shape in the dust on my window without any further sanction or violation. All encounters with ltraffic enforcement should be that cool.

We planned a "minimalist" camp: just a small tent and a minivan for two guys. I slept in the back of the minivan and shared that space with our clothes, food, alcohol, gear, and 15 gallons of water. Lucked out and was able to squat in the backyard of a another friend's extremely well organized theme camp on "A" street, right next to their shower(!)

Spent days looking for shade (not yet comfortable cruising in to foreign camps uninvited, but that will change next year). Lucked out and scored a couple of Yellow Bikes on the second day and cruised all over (when I was done, I made a point of offering them to people that seemed like they could use them). The bikes were helpful, but since I'm out of shape, my legs and ass got sore quickly.

Nights, I bounced around to clubs hotter, edgier, more visually spectacular and "organic" than any clubs I've been to in New York or SF. My costume was done last minute and was not very flattering, but I rocked it anyway, unselfconciously. Met a couple of exceedingly cool people, and also ran into a couple of jerks. Got multiple compliments on a Japanese robe I bought in the Tokyo airport three years ago. With all the competition for eyeballs, I felt pretty good about that.

Meanwhile, my campmate wasn't having the greatest time. We were planning on staying Thursday night and leaving Friday morning to beat Exodus. But on Thursday morning, having seen all I wanted to see, and too sore to venture out into the playa to see more art, I decided we should spend our last night in a Reno hotel room. Breaking camp took about 10 min. I said goodbyes and many thanks to old and new friends and we gave away 10 gal. of water to our theme camp hosts. People kind of looked at me like I was crazy for leaving, but by the time I was floating in the hotel pool, looking up at the blue sky, and listening to my childhood favorite track "Funkytown" wafting over the pool area speakers, I knew beyond a doubt that I'd made the right decision. That night we bounced around to some low-class Reno clubs I had a hell of a good time (my buddy never got into a groove, but appreciated my company).

In a short period of time, I left much wiser and anticipating a return trip. There are several aspects of the burn that I now understand that even my most seasoned friends hadn't told me about. Like how the visual appeal of your costume and physical body will *significantly* affect your social interactions. I'm interested in compiling a "Thriver's Guide" to succeed the "Survivors Guide" that documents these unwritten rules.

Anyway, great time all around. I may not be back next year, or the year after that; but I'm sure I'll make it back eventually. Just look for the guy changing clothes in the back of a minivan, looking like a total newby idiot, but loving every minute of it.

I hear it's pretty dusty up there right now.

It's currently delayed, but there's just under 2 hours before the burn is supposed to happen, so it's still possible. But the webcam is looking pretty dusty. It's not quite a white-out, but it's close.

Khaki and a frat shirt, same as on the playa.
I have dusted myself and everything else with flour, and I've been watching Short Attention Span Theatre on current tv when they put their three minutes an hour of burning man coverage on.
(I think BBC is giving us more coverage.)
It seems somewhat unsatisfactory.

Just so everyone knows, the burn happened, or technically, is still happening. It started at least an hour late, but went off with a bang.

Looks like the current things burning are actually not the man - I think they finished that burn.

I don't know but I would assume that the gate is opened up again, as the skies are clear. The storm lasted for a long time, but things are moving now.

Generic,
Thanks for the updates! You are getting your info from the webcam? My iPhone won't run it.
We Hated to miss the burn, but our camp was flying apart and we left in a whiteout. Bad idea I know, but we made it. Perfect pylon placement. When did they close the exit road?
We arrived tuesday and had a great week! Awesome weather, terrible playa. Super deep dust and potholes. Hard to get anywhere. So lots of parties with the neighbors, who were mostly fabulous.

Yeah, it's been a little temperamental on my computer, too, but everything I reported came from the webcam and the radio.
 Reporting from Southwestern Pennsylvania, lol.

Looks like you can still catch the burn here, though.

First Burn.

Amazing!

Day 1, we set up our tent in a whiteout, four hours later we had a few cocktails in our camp dome and then went out exploring. Yes the playa was intense, but we made it! Stood at the top of the man and watched the dust race underneath us! Hoping every day wasn't this crazy! Can't remember what we did that night... we must have been fuCked up.... :)

Day 2, woke up to a beautiful day with our new friends/campmates 'Shadyvil' and took off to explore together, then seperately and joined up for drinks with the camp and a great game of volleyball! Feeling sweaty and up for dancing cruised over to the deep end (which felt like it was in our backyard) and danced our asses off! Met some great new friends that night (Alexis and Nick on 8:45 and Fairlane, msg us for the pix biOtch!!!) and cruised on our bikes all over the playa!! Opulent temple was our favorite spot that night!! LOTS of Jager, vodka, spinning (and falling)...

Day 3, Gage explored seperately all day, enjoying all the playa and everything it had to offer! I chilled at the camp bonding with the ladies, napping, and then cruised around for happy hour... met up with Gage ate dinner and went out for a whiteparty night! During this night we realized how the playa can test any relationship, as it did ours. That night became an evening of honest emotions, untold desired, fears, yelling, screaming, soul searching and a long walk home... with uncertainty about what the future had in store for us...

Day 4, Woke up feeling sad, and unsure of what the next few days would bring... Gage must have been feeling the same because we then had a very honest few moments together, realized we have way to much love and life left in US to let the playa and the sometimes uncomfortable and anything is possible kind of mind frame take what we are away from us. We had one of the most amazing days!! Our camp went on a brownie/whiskey bike swarm that afternoon, taking over the streets and bars, and had the best time!! Stopped at a few camps (all 50 of us) had some drinks, danced, rode out to the temple the tower, watched the sun go down, and came home to some amazing ribs and beans and cornbread!!!!! Props to our campmates for that day!!! Dinner put us to sleep and woke up hours later got our sleepy asses ready only to find out it was 2am... Hit up root society and opulent. We really connected that night and stayed up for our first playa sunrise... simply beautiful!!!

Day 5, lazy start to our day after the crazy night... cruised over to the sno cone hut, and the weenie roast! yUm!! Tantric massage in the evening with 70 other couples... completely arousing to see all the couples looking to experience new ways to connect sexually and intimately. Unfortunately, we had to leave early (leaving my massage for later...) and feed our hungry campmates. Spicy italian night! Went out with our campmates Dre N Brett (miss you guys already) caught the golden duck and roCked it out!!! Best dj on the playa!!!!!! Played a few games of tetris and walked home.

Day 6, Whiteout!!! Best day yet!!!! Can you say... Brownie first then got on our bikes, and cruised all over... found a really cool bar with mojitos and great music!! Found our friend Mr. Powers, finally and made plans to find eachother for the burn. Headed home for hawaiin dinner and ravioli as our second course.... hungry! Passed out and thought we missed the burn... Found out it was at 11, made it just in time. We took a blanket and enjoyed the moment together while we were peaking... :) While sitting on our blanket during the burn and watching from a distance we soon realized that after the burn everyone immediatley heads out and we were swarmed by thousands of people. Chilled with some awesome people from San Fran... Incredible day and night!!!

Day 7, packed all our shit up, joined the rest of the camp in coming together to break down most of the camp... had one last breakfast with the camp, hugs and goodbyes, exchange of emails... Shadyvil you guys F'n rOck!!!! Exodus was only about 2 hours, Gage got an otterpop while I slept through it all...

Our memorable moments of BM 2008

- Favorite unexpected visual: DNA led helium balloon strans across the sky
- Walking at night on the playa bonding and exploring amidst all the chaos.
- Favorite days Tuesday & Saturday for Gage. Thursday & Saturday for dG.
- Best art car- Golden Duck... if anyone knows who the dj was that night, please msg us!!! :)
- Best day spot- The Deep End
- Best night spot- Opulent Temple
- Favorite virgin experience- brownie/whiskey bike swarm with camp

We are currently on the road, back to our house but we already miss our new home... We look forward to reading everyone's experiences as well... Already planning for next year! Love all you f'n burners, see you soon!

So I returned from burning man on saturday night at about 2 am in the morning after leaving somewhere around 3pm in the afternoon.

Wednesday when we left we had several bad omens not to go. My computer got run over by my friends fathers car, and her keys and phone were on his car as he pulled away and got messed up. My computer still worked except for the superdrive ( I had to buy a new one yesterday ) and her keys and phone still worked. We thought ourselves lucky and just continued going. The drive up there was very quick and we made it in about 6 hours, very little traffic on the way their, saw several fellow burners on their way up and all in all a nice drive. I think we stopped about twice on the way, once for wendy's and once in empire before we hit the last highway to BM to get gas. The last highway was the worst, 447 takes fucking forever and 60 miles seemed like 500. When we finally got there we were playing a game of follow the leader and we missed the dirt road entrance so we went an extra mile or so before we realized it and turned around to head back. The greeters station was awesome, this amazingly beautiful woman, welcomed us "home" ( and I totally understand what that means now ) and asked us out of the car since we were virgin burners. We get out and she makes us hit the bell and yell as loud as we can "I"m not a virgin anymore" and then make playa angels, which was fun. I rolled all around and got wayyyy dirty :-) .... Once we got through the greeters station it was about another 2 miles or so to the block where our campmates were. As we traveled along the city blocks we got asked to stop our car by one camp and come have margaritas with them to celebrate our virgin ness, and also because they were stopping cars to just share margaritas. It was soo nice of them so we got out and had margaritas, which was very welcome after the long drive. We finally reached 315 and Dart and found the dustbowl, took us a minute to find Curly and everyone but when we finally did we set up home for the next few days. Jeremy and I set up the tent which April and Jenn helped and unloaded some stuff from the car. FInally around midnight we finished everything, changed and then headed out to have some fun and explore the city.

Wednesday, thursday and friday nights were not so much a blur, but time almost had to meaning there because everything was so much fun. The city is soo much different in the evening then it is during the day. The day everyone is trying to stay cool, and or wandering around the different camps. In the evening the lights come on and everything glows. Typically Jenn, jeremy, april and I would wander around the esplanade going to the different musical camps, listening to house, psy trance, hip hop, etc. I think almost every night we walked in the area of about 4-7 miles ( which would explain why my feet are soo torn up and bloodied ) through the esplanade and across the axis's to the man and then the other side of the city.

During the day we found this awesome camp, called camp misty or something like that. We got invited inside 2 large tents where they had misters set up on the ceiling and squirt bottles for everyone to mist each other!!! we sat down and it was like an oasis in the desert ( literally ) they were also making margaritas for everyone so we got a nice large margarita. It was like heaven on earth in those tents, the people were so nice.. They eventually ran out of tequila, mix and ice, so Jenn and I took off for a few minutes to go get them more ice, mix and tequila so everything could continue going, this pretty much cemented us coming back for the next day or so :-)... We almost had no need to eat food since it was sooo hot. I think I was drinking about 5-10 gatorades a day and then 2 gallons of water.. so half or more of our food didn't go to waste, but got brought back to the house.

We left before the man burned because our lungs were getting killed by the dust storms. It ended up being a white out which took us almost 2 hours to drive 5 miles...lol... But it still added to the fun of things. The drive back took almost 10 hours, again highway 447 is the worst highway I've ever been on. and then we tried to find a motel in reno for jenn jeremy, and us ( they left about an hour after us ) which wasn't happening because of labor day weekend. we stopped in one city to get some mcdonalds...mmmmm processed food again!!!! lol.. FInally got back to aprils house around 1230 am and started un packing the car and repacking mine. I finally got home towards 2am or so... and ironicaly I wasn't tired, but I was happy to get a shower finally!!

The experience of people being so nice and giving is something that I had not experienced in a while and has given me new hope and new perspective on a few things. I am already looking forward to going "home" next year with my friends who I shared this experience with. It has changed me in a very personal way.

Had a fantastic time! Too tired to write about now. Got there Sunday at midnight, got home 1 hr. ago.

Fitting words: inspired, blown away, intense, survived, laughter.

362 days till the man burns!

Fabulous. Rocked the 12 hour Monday dust storm without sleep or a tent and then again on Saturday. It was a some what painful year for me beings how I was fighting off the rest of a kidney infection and than later in the week one of my wisdom teeth decided to make a painful appearance. Got a little crazy on a teeter tooter and sustained a plethora of bruises and cuts but still had an excellent time. Ended up giving a quite a few hand made hats to random appreciative people but had wish I had time to make more.

Loved the Flame Thrower Shooting Gallery and adored the ingenious kinetic sculpture Dragon made of pie & cupcake tins by Duane Flatmo. The roaming photo booth was also amazing. Hung out at the airport a lot daydreaming and discovered the amazing freaking fun of para trikes.

Also enjoyed...

-My radtacular Hawaiian neighbor who takes the cake for being the best newb.
-Flaming night skydivers
-Huge Merry-Go-Round on the esplanade. It never got old watching people fly off that thing
-Center Camp Sword Swallower
-Black Light Theater
-The guy with an actual lawn mower mowing the esplanade during Saturdays dust storm
-The ketchup and mustard fight in DG
-The Lotus Girls fireworks display
-The Baby Taxidermy display "Keep them cuddly and quiet forever!!"

I don't know. There was a lot and a lot going on as always. It was overwhelming and chaotic. It was my ninth year and my boyfriend's second. It was cool to have him out and be inspired to contribute next year.

Lower overall burn energy this year; the weather kicked a lot of people's asses, and a lot of people had post-burn plans for the evening and I don't think they expected the burn to happen. Still, it was beautiful.

Not as much huge playa art this year--due to either the theme, the cost of fuel, or both--but the BRC nights were as spectacular as ever.

My wife ACTUALLY HEARD somebody say "Where's the food court" and on Friday night somebody interrupted my wife and at Playa-Go-Round wguke we were hiding out from the dust, to ask us if there were "actual nudists" on the playa. "Nobody says anything or gets upset?!" Then he asked us whether we were "rolling" and what the difference was between "rolling" and being on LSD. Asked my wife if she was on either. Started wondering if this dude was a cluetard or a cop. He said it was his first night on the playa.

Overall, though, saw fewer police, less moop (wind might have blown it away), less trash in the toilets, less drama, shit-ton more dust. Everything was a little mellower overall.

Sounds like over all it was good but not great or could have been better.

I guess it's to be expected for the burn this year with a theme titled "American dream".

I like next years title better.

The problems had nothing to do with the theme, imo, the problems had to do with nature: severe white outs, including on burn day, and loose dunes and hard ruts all over the playa making it difficult to ride bikes.

I'm not complaining about these "problems", they just made this burn a different one. I wasn't keen on the theme, but it's just a theme, and that art that came out of it was especially good.

I loved the swimming pool on the playa...be sure to see some photos of it, it was very well executed.

The Burn is so Blind Men and the Elephant. Anybody who tries to tell you something about it globally is almost certainly full of shit.

2008 was an Olympic burn!

For the simple reason that the people I connected with were amazing and loving. Within one week we were a close family. It was sad to see them each pack up and leave. How do you say goodbye?

Can't wait for 2009!
