SANCTUARY
My spouse is waiting for her eplaya account to be set up fully,(gingles) so she can post herself.
In the meantime, she has asked me to start this topic.
She currently volunteers as a crisis counsellor, and would like to volunteer in something like this at BM. Is "Sanctuary" a permanent fixture?

Sanctuary
If she has certificates in things like Crisis Management etc she should talk to someone from the Rangers. There should be a link to them from the Burningman website in the volunteer section somewhere.
Sanctuary is indeed a permenant fixture, and a busy place at times!

As far as I know quals for Sanctuary are not the same as for the EMS team. EMS is staffed by 90-95% folks who are professional. That's not the same with Rangers. Having a solid background in crisis management (pro or volunteer) and a willingness to deal with the sort of cases we routinely handle is often enough.
BTW, this is assuming that your wife has been to the event before. Rangers do not accept volunteers who ar coming to the event for the first time.

For about three years now.
It's official policy.
The idea being that it's best for someone to come to the event and experience it first and then come back and volunteer. It's a difficult thing to expect (or to ask) that a volunteer jump into something as demanding and intense (relative terms of course) as Rangering who's coming to the event for the first time.
BTW, I emphasize that this is a Ranger policy and NOT a blanket BM volunteer policy.

Rangers
I know a couple of guys who Rangered their first year at Burning Man in 2000. One returned in 2002 and again in 2003. The other hasn't been back since, not that he hasn't wanted to. He's just too busy with other priorities I guess.precipitate wrote:Oh, I think it's a grand policy.
I asked because I've had two friends Ranger their first year. For one it
was a great experience, and she was a natural. For the other, well, let's
just say he didn't return to the event. But that was in '99 and '00.
I did a little echelon (part of rangers) last year, my first Burn, but I don't know if I'd do it again. I think there might be other places where I'd have more fun giving my time.

I understand that rangering is a BIG undertaking for virgins. Thanks folks.
But my wife - who doesn't get to a computer much, as you can tell by now - is a stage manager by training, mom by choice, and a certified crisis line volunteer, so you see her participation in community revolves around taking care of people. She was inspired by the 'exploding girl on art car' thread. Does anyone know of somewhere else that she can help out in this capacity if not with the Rangers?

Find a role and fill it
One does not need to don the Khaki in order to serve the Community. I was a first year Ranger in 99, and it was my first year. The following year I worked for DMV, and then I went to Gate. I guess I have a fetish for uniforms.juanicoheal wrote:Does anyone know of somewhere else that she can help out in this capacity if not with the Rangers?
Since 2001 I've been on Poop Patrol to encourage people to practice Excremental Correctness, and oftentimes I saw stuff that was dangerous, potentially moopifying, or just plain bad manners in my travels. In my capacity of Chief Poopervisor of the Pottie Project, I just saundered up to the person most available and strove to rectify the issue.
Rangers have no authority, just sobriety and a radio. If you see a problem, it becomes your duty as a human and a citizen to try to solve it for the sake of community.

Hey Robbi,
Have I told you that I admire that you have taken on the crappiest (pun intended) job out there? NOT what I would want to undertake on my holiday......
I will be bringin extra baby-wipes and maybe no-water hand sanitizer to give to the community JOTS - as long as I don't have to CLEAN the cans...
Pine scented air-fresheners anyone?
I guess we could just put a sign out "SAFE PLACE" in front of our camp while we're home, and then if anyone needs an ear/water/reality check/sober/grounded person they could mosey on over?

My wife the RN
My wife will no doubt gravitate to the First Aid area. She's an RN and would love to lend a hand. A wrist injury forced her out of nursing (can't lift). She misses nursing and still has her license.

RN's at BM
If she's a first time burner, then she should enjoy the festival in some non-official capacity. Once the word gets out that she's a nurse, she could become your friendly neighborhood boo-boo kisser. If she's a returning burner, then your wife should contact Joseph Pred: 911 at burningman dot com in order to help out.
1st timer
I know her...she will either get partying or get helping.
