money bucket
I did an experiment/art project:
I hung a bucket with a whole bunch of change in it, and, underneath a sign:
Money, take it or leave it
in front of our camp.
It was amazing to see peoples reactions.........
and, the patterns that emerged.
One was, that, during the day, it'd get some bills put in it, and, they'd disappear during the night.
also, some folks left Canadian money, not sure if they exchanged it or what.
also a few "trinkets"........
One mom walked by, and the kids with her, all seemed under 9, ran and grabbed handfuls of money, and, the mom kept saying "put it back" and, this went back and forth.......for the most part, the kids left it there.......
I wonder the lesson learned?
It seemed lots of folks dropped money in, and, commented hopefully someone could use it.
It seems they could since, it mostly disappeared if it was bills, anyway.......
I'll get the money counted and report as to the final outcome, when my brain begins to function normally (?) again.........
I saw several people start taking, then put it back, and then turn and add money........
It seemed quite thought provoking anyway......

Yeah, people put stuff in my ATM
I had at ATM at 3:45 and Esplanade that gave out special playa money. But regularly when I would go to reload I found things people had put in. Sometimes junk, on rare occasions something nice. Even once, some other playa money somebody had made.

haha that was yours? We were all sorts of out of our minds and tried to use the atm there before we finally got distracted by a nearby burlesque show.bradtem wrote:I had at ATM at 3:45 and Esplanade that gave out special playa money. Yup
Should not have been too hard to use, though people get drunk of course.
I am curious for any stories of people who spent the money. A lot of the money (especially the reverse money which you gave when gifting) was aimed at being a good way to introduce yourself to a stranger, for example, "buying" an explanation of an artwork, or offering a visit to a camp.

There was another ATM right by the Black Rock City Hell phone booth & the display of the large panoramic shots on the esplanade. I think it was around 3 or 4 & the esplanade. It was not a real ATM but it gave out fake bills which were a "free pass to visit a camp". I got a few of the fake bills at home.

some of my campmates got money out of the ATM, and took it to bars and clubs, where people totally loved it. i'd say that was a big hit. and thanks for doing the sat phone again, I got to talk to my daughter twice. that was awesome.
I saw the money bucket too, and I remember thinking my reaction was funny. I just wanted to stay far, far away from it! I didn't go to the ATM either. money, fah. good for ice tho...

No that's the ATM
Next to my phone and photo wall. I was going to retire it, but the bastards made the theme the American Dream, and suddenly art about money was theme art, so I brought it back. What can you do? Retiring it this year though, doing too much.

Aaaaahh! bradtem, that was your phone booth. I spoke to you once at a S.F. Decom where you had that booth set up.
Cool, and an ATM to boot?
I miss the playa.
And ygmir, when I first saw this thread i thought it was going to be about BM being a money bucket.
That must have been fun.

it was fun.
As with BM in general, it refreshed my faith in humanity, as a whole.....
mostly, people were quite positive in their response, conversant, curious........and, left more than took (I think, I've not counted all the coins yet).
One very high, 20 something "raver" type macho dude, stated he was going to pick the entire project up and run off with it, laughing and looking at his friends around him.
I said "go ahead, if that's what you need to do"......they all just looked at him, his macho grin faded, and, he left.........they followed, snickering.......

BitterDan! I visited your tavern for the first time and wanted to meet you, though this totally wasted guy drove us out. He was really creepy, notifying me that he could tell me ANYTHING I wanted to know about Jim Morrisson. Turned out he was pretty knowledgable about Jim Morrisson, but I guess he got carried away in an ambulance. Anyway, loved the moonshine! c ya next year.
