Looking for regional events in the SoCal area...

Post by Gage » Sun May 04, 2008 2:47 pm

We signed up for the los angeles list-announce through bm.com, but that was a few weeks ago, and I really haven't received any helpful information. I'm not sure if this is because they are replacing regionals or ??

Can anyone post some website (or contact) addresses for different SoCal groups? We are fiendin... :)

There is always a lot going on. Gigsville is a large welcoming village mostly in the LA area. They get together a lot and have a lot of local trips.

http://gigsville.org

Our camp has been a part of Gigsville, though we do our own things a lot as well. We have a lot of outdoor trips, climbing, canoeing, camping, and outdoor parties a la Burningman. I have a newborn so our webpage isn't much help with our events, but hopefully I'll get on top of updates again soon. We have contact information and some of our past events.

We're throwing an event on the 4th of July weekend:

An event coming up soon which will be darn good is Elysium.

Lightning in a Bottle is in Santa Barbara and very soon:

Hope that helps a bit.

No problem. There are a lot more events but many are not open to the public. Meet some people at these events and you'll likely be invited to the other events. The event organizers aren't being elitist, but had to deal with enough law enforcement and people who cannot act responsibly that they want to have some control over who's around.

Joshua Tree Music Festival is next weekend at Twenty-Nine Palms. Some of the Moonshine Tavern crew will be there including Dato and myself.

I'd encourage people to not do the Joshua Tree Music festival. The land owner who makes a lot of money from people attending allowed us to have a similar event there. Before we rented the space we told him there would be live music, bands, he said it was fine and he even told other campers who were there that weekend that we'd be loud. It was actually smaller scale than the Joshua Tree Festival, he helped us set up our speakers, then the first night he decided he changed his mind and we couldn't have any amplified music. It was all downhill from there. We caused no problems, and he imposed rules against our prior agreement with no explanations. The last day while cleaning up we blasted music, he told us he'd call the cops and we encouraged that since we're leaving anyway. We left his camp much cleaner than we found it, pissed him off with some loud music for a few hours, made him a few thousand dollars and now I tell the story, so hopefully he'll lose some of that money we made him.

I'm told that the one who runs the Joshua Tree Music Festival is friends with the camp owner. If you attend, you may want to mention our story, which I'm sure he's heard a similar version of. If you get any explanation, I'd like to hear it.

All that said, the Joshua Tree Music Festival is a fun event with good people, but just as I avoid certain stores, with which I disagree with their policy and where they spend their money; I won't attend that festival.

Well, call me a follower but my crew is going to JTMF and I am going with them. I don't really care where the money is going as I am certain that they are in this to make money (and let's not kid ourselves, so is BMORG). I understand your beef with them but I am not going to let the politics of the event planners interfere with my good time. :D

Burning Man events in LA

Post by ajnolley » Thu Jun 12, 2008 4:04 pm

I'm giving this post a bump. I remember in year's past, the la local burning man list would pop up in my inbox more frequently, and usually had something going on at least once or twice a month. I'm jonesing for some burning man party styles, but can't find anything anywhere! Barring any last minute events popping up, are there any burners interested in meeting at a bar or some such next week?

Not in love with a 1000-mile drive at today's gas prices are you?

Local events are different than Burningman IMO. One cannot replace the other. Going to the burn doesn't make me want to stop smaller events and the smaller ones don't ease my need for the big burn. A thousand mile drive is fine, but so are a bunch of 50 mile drives in between. :)

There's a Shakedown coming up on July 18, where we'll all bring out the projects we've been working on for the past 11 months and see how they work. If you're interested, sign up for the gigsville list by going to gigsville.org and clicking on the "get involved" link.

I must warn you, however, that a couple people have come in recently thinking Gigsville is some sort of a rainbow tribe gathering with a lot of cozy vibes and stuff. They've been very disappointed by our level of harshness.

Gigsville people in general are not mean, we just have a *strong* need to make fun of each other, the world, and sometimes even you. So if you join, please do not take anything personally until you've spent a few months getting to know us and our humor.

The LA Regional list seems to have fallen asleep, so I applied to be a regional contact and get some action going on. I know there are about 12 other applicants, so there are many people interested in getting similar action in the LA area.

I eagerly await the day when we can all hang out in the desert... either here or in Black Rock Desert.

I just realized... my signature file really says it all, doesn't it?
