Cleaning a DSLR post-playa?

Post by joshr » Fri Sep 05, 2008 7:25 pm

So I just got back from the playa with my 1D mark 3
I'm going to be bringing it into canon for cleaning on Monday *BUT*
does anyone have tips for cleaning it before then? I need to do some cleaning and shooting this weekend.

while on the playa I did a few things to keep it healthy
1- I did not change lenses.
2- I put on a junk UV filter to protect the lens
3- I taped up most of the seams
4- I bagged the lens

so it's pretty good on the internals, I just need to know the best way to get the alkali dust off the exterior of the camera before I change the lens, and the uv filter.

So what do you do? any recommendations?

1. Blast it with air. Lots of air. Canned air, bomber air, etc. A dry, soft bristle tooth brush can work wonders as well to loosen up stubborn areas. Blast the loosened areas with air.

2. Wipe it down with "electronic device" cleaning wipes. I got some at Wal Mart in a dispens-o-matic tub and they do a good job of cleaning the surfaces of dust. Obviously, do not use on your glass of lcd screens.

3. Wipe down with microfiber cloth.

For your glass, lcd, etc, I use an alcohol based glass cleaner cloth if necessary. Dust and what not on the lens should blow right off.
Playawaste Raiders cordially invites you to suck it.
