Damn, I forgot to close the gate..

The van was running ruff and I did not want to drive nite time with it.. the first valley I stoped in was having a statained 40mph wind storm.. So dropped into the next valley.. The van was full of camp gear.. I set bed on the ground.. Nature called about 4:30.. "There were so many stars"..
I stood up and ansewered the call.. I saw a dust ring on my pillow like from the playa.. Thinkng that was strange, I reached down and touched it.. It was ice.. A few miles later at a gas stop, I was told the temp had droped to less than 24°f there.. And would have been much colder where I had slept..

Dirty fuel filter on the weekend.. I bucked and kicked my way home over two mountain passes.. Some times down to 5mph.. Cat was happy to see me and put me down for a nap right away.. Travel mate had lunch in a cafe and a power wash for his van.. Figured he could pick me up along the way if I was road kill

I'm roughly half of the way back. Naw, more like 47.325% back.
That sounds more like it.

What, was there some sort of insane adventure in the desert?

I got back about 1730 hrs. PST. yesterday. I lucked out on exodus: got in line at 0830, got to Gerlach at 0930; only one hour. Gassed up in Wadsworth. Topped off in Reno at 1130. Heading west on I 80, there was the Labor Day exodus from Reno to contend with. At the Boca Dam/ Stampede turnoff, traffic slowed to 25-30 mph and stayed that way till I turned off the Hiway 20 ramp at 1630 hrs. Only an hour downhill to my house. When I saw the Sutter Buttes, I knew I was back. Only 9 hours.

i'm back. ish. the road to BRC from Eagleville: a giant steer almost killed us in the road. the way back to Portland: calm. to quote Crispin Glover: it is fine. everything is fine.

we stopped for a very necessary and lovely half-day and night on the way back. showers and hot springs and mellowness. this massively reduces re-entry/decompression evils for me.

got home and surprised myself by immediately rinsing down at least the *outsides* of all the boxes and whatnot, even the car, and swabbed down the inside of the car too. i was up on the porch outside my house and i heard someone making snide remarks about the rebar i'd left in the gutter after spraying it. "how PRECIOUS," the woman said," Can you believe they're washing off their tent stakes?"

i felt the strange desire to run after her and go, "do you have any fucking idea what you're talking about? five minutes ago, those stakes were three inches deep in Playa cement. piles of it. have you ever even *seen* Playa cement? who are you? why do you care what i do to my tent stakes?"

which struck me as a hilarious response to the Real World. of course i didn't run out after her. i just stacked up the boxes with the semi-clean outsides and figured that eventually i'll get around to unpacking them, inhaling the dust and perhaps by then even finding it nostalgic. for today, i'm glad to breathe clean air.
