The act of assaulting PhDs with dinner rolls by randomly throwing said rolls at social gatherings, in effect proving that:
a) there are more PhDs out there than they would like us to think
b) people are far less impressed with their credentials than they are confortable with
c) they can be pelted with soft bakery objects in the same manner as the general populace- they simply think that they would have a better idea on why this is happeneing.

See, now I just feel kicked in the teeth here. If we take this guy at his word he has violated some ethical issues it seems to me around how he came into the community. New definition for Anthropologist -hmph soft scientist that uses peoples norms and mores for their personal finacial gain and tenure rather than for any knowledge....I'd be curious about your literature review.Oh, I am an Anthropology professor at one of Northern Califonia's State Universities, doing a longitudinal study on Burning Man,, thanks for the humor and insight.

If we take you at your word-- that you are doing a longitudinal study--the fact that you mentioned that you are at a NoCal "state" universityin the same paragraph implies that your study is being suuported by university infrastructure. Your bias is showing thow so how can your longitudinal study even be valid? Or was that a set up? (anthropology soft science or spsuedo science--jeesh-or are you pulling our legs? that makes everything you said questionable and golly I thought you werent a bully but actually a concerned individual. )
what an asshole. I'm gonna watch for your study, bub.
I often heard the sorrel nag (who always loved me) crying out, ..."Take care of thyself, gentle Yahoo."

Gold Star
And, ya'll thought you were chain yankers...! I get the gold star, you get the hook, line and sinker... Hoo Raa. I guess I owe Stuart an apology for the Off Road remark.. The Playa is just the road to town complete with road markers for the up valley ranches and mines. No one thinks of it as "off road" I did write that essay before I moved out here.
My daughter and I horse packed into East High Rock Canyon Wilderness for our first trip of the season, scouting hunting sites. We camped last night by a seasonal pond, she played with the lazer sight on my pistol, trying for distance, built a campfire. Early today, she got her first lion, dead run, led it, got it, 6.5 ft, 122 lbs. . I backed her up ready to shoot if needed, but one shot.. Not bad for an 11 year old girl, The horses wouldn't go near it, the "stench of carnivore" So, I did have go out and get the truck and off road into the wilderness to retrieve it.. (you can complain about that Stuart for all the good it will do you) And of course she doesn't like to field dress game, but she is learning. Good trip, we saw two bald eagles, lots of chukar, wild hoses, and of course the lion.
Some of you complain about the "contempt" you feel I express. It is no more than the standard that the nomad feels for the townsperson or farmer. Don't you remember Lee Marvin's famous line in "Paint your Wagon"? "Farmers!" ... Toureg for the farming cultures to the south. Navajo for the Hopi. Cossacks for the Muscovites. Mongels for the Chinese. Bedouin for oasis dwellers. Masai for .. everyone. You shouldn't get upset.. Take it with a good Buddhist equanimity.
So, maybe I will have a theme camp next Labor Day, Call it Gullibleoo

As Technopatra said a few posts ago, this is a prime case of somebody trolling for fun. If it's on a message board and it pisses you off that much, just ignore it. BRR's guilty of being a jerk, but the rest of you are guilty of making it fun for him. If you really want him to stop, then just be boringly sensible or completely silent.
Maybe something along the lines of "Dear Black Rock Rick, Thank you for your interest in Burning Man. Although you pose an interesting suggestion, we have already determined this area of the Nevada desert to be the most suitable location to hold an event as large and unique as Burning Man is. Have a nice day."
Yes, I'm bored, and no, this isn't really my argument, but y'all seem to be whipping yourselves into a fury over absolutely nothing, so I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

i always find it offensive when people add fuel to the fire in the name of not adding fuel to the fire, ignore the irony, and plow ahead with fattening what they describe as an otherwise stupid thread.
why do you care? This is MY dysfunctional relationship and I'll have it if I want. Clearly you are getting something out of it or you would not be here commenting. Clearly I am getting something out of it or I would not be here arguing.

Just think
That lion skin could be part of the trousseau!
I cannot help myself, I stayed away for a long time but the thread kept going on. I just had to see what was happening. Lets see; to date Ric has been a big sheep hunting guide, a cowboy with a MUSTANG (sorry that is funny, most mustangs make truly sorry mounts), a man who grew up on sheep/cattle ranch that raised flowers, a tortured vet, a prof for an unnamed college, what’s next? Larry Harvey?
In his last message he brags about his daughter killing a cougar. Well it is the season and the tag is easy to get and only costs $250 and as far as I can tell requires only proof of having completed a hunter’s safety course. Why this champion of nature would want to kill the thing baffles me; oh yes, it eats the deer and elk he needs to survive, now, I know several non-full professors and while they don’t make that much I have not caught them having to trap pigeons in the park yet. He goes on to describe his daughter’s dislike of field dressing animals, hummm. This brings to my mind that very few people get hungry enough to eat cougar; I have been told that it stinks. So why would he not just skin the thing and leave the carcass for the scavengers, after all it is much easier to skin a fresh kill and I am sure that he would always travel with both skinning and capeing knives. (Note: I have been away from this life for a long time and never did trophy hunting but a caping(?) knife is a skinner that is small and is used on the head and sometimes the feet.) Unless the books that he has read in his studio apt. did not cover that little bit.
We as burners tend to be very trusting, largely because we tend to be honest ourselves. Our culture more or less demands honesty and those who do not meet those standards tend to be pointedly excluded and eventually they go away. With my first post here I answered what I thought was an honest question, with my second post I expressed some doubts, with my third post I indicated that he was full of shit. Almost every time he writes about his LIFE AS ONE MAN AGAINST THE WILDERNESS he screws up and has to dig to get out, notice please that his proof comes from books, not real life experience. Even now, after many story changes some people here are buying into the professor story, question: Why? Now this person seems well educated or at least very well read but at this point to take any of his statements as factual is ludicrous. If this thread continues I will pop in on occasion to point out inconsistencies and give him an excuse to dig though the library and his collection of Wild West adventure novels.
Oh, Ric, you missed a bet on not getting in early that some of your ancestors were poor downtrodden Native Americans, that would have gotten you even more ‘Ahhh, poor thing’ points. Notice how soft people got after your tortured vet BS. If anyone has a problem with the above, tough, I have fourth cousins that still live on reservations and dear old dad hit WWII, Korea, and Nam and he doesn’t bitch.

Silver me man
Silver,
Error #1, Mustangs are great horses, cow horses, trail horse, endurance horses etc.,, quite popular out here in the west. Here is a site for your review; http://www.mustangoutfitters.net. A 17 year old boy up the road at Soldier Meadows ranch just sold one for $3,000. Our mare Tizzy is 24 and a retired edurance racer, she loved hundred milers, and can still out run every younger ranch horse my older daughter (the competitive one) puts her up against . You haven't seen Hidalgo yet?
Error#2. Not a cowboy except in the course of events, like helping Mac move some cows the other day. A hunting guide for fun and an excuse to get paid for going camping not just sheep, all local game, including lions, my money job is something else irrelvant to this discussion..
Error#3, A multiple crop stock operation is somehow suspect?
Error#4 Believing the hornswoggle about the college professor... Yanked your chain well, N'est Ce Pas?
Error#5 Champion of Nature. One could easily understand from my posts that I am a lover of empty land. I also enjoy pitting myself in the hunt... Running jackrabbits with a dirt bike is a hoot. Killing lions before they kill cows? An acceptable practice... What was that about a license and hunter safety?? Some suburban stuff?
Error#6 Lion meat is not tasty.. I put a few lion steaks on the barby tonight.. Lion meat is tasty.. Sweet,, like human flesh I am told.
Error#7 Elk? No Elk in western Nevada.
Error#8 Studio apartment... not that I will or even care to change your mind.. I spent the day building a new corral on a southern slope as the horses current corral is a shady sea of mud and horse pucky.
Most Native Nevadans don't have indian blood, I of course tain't a native, being from Pismo Beach originally. Plenty of indians around here though, drunk, wrecking cars...
If I could figure out how to post a photo I slip a photo in of the dear lion killing child.
Not to be personally insulting, but if dear old Dad did WWII, Korea and Nam,, he must be psycho. War sucks, one year of one war was enough..
Huge duststorm the other day on the playa. I tracked the source of the dust as it was darker than usual. The site of the BM is harrowed after the event. There is no consolidation of the particles like in the undisturbed playa. When the wind kicks up, silt from below the normal surface layers enters the air, resulting worse than usual duststorms originating from the BM site.. wonder if the Bureau of Large Mistakes (BLM) has looked at this...

Then sign up for a free account. Then upload photo and using the URL in the properties of the photo post it here and if you need the HTML help with that let me know but you seem intelligent enough. I am actually anxious to see the size of the beast you are talking about. I used to love hunts in AZ when I lived there. Going after Javelina fun times

The only reason I posted again was because I was appalled that there were still people taking your word for anything.
Lastly I can understand your love of the movie Hidalgo since the entire thing is a complete fabrication. A quote referring to Hopkins' story seems to fit you very well: "Did this man Hopkins say anything true?"

Boys you be struggling now.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a fabrication, Starwars is a fabrication, Matrix is a fabrication, If Hidalgo is a fabrication who cares? I hear it is a fun movie. Ya'll be so stuck in finding fault you lost your compass. Must come from the essential meanlessness of your techno industrial urban lifestyles. Silver, Jeffers stands 15.2 hands,, not really little.. Mustangs are handy, you can throw a few bales into the corral and leave them, they won't eat themselves to death like domestic horses. Their hooves are quite hard, we don't shoe ours. They are resistant to disease. Tough little buggers.
