Living in the Florida Keys...
I would guess that you've never been through a hurricane? It's NOT much fun. And I for one wouldn't wish something like that on anyone.

Re: Well.....
How about those that didn't leave or those officials that didn't enough to get them out of there? Now they seem to be part of the problem taxing emergency services in the area. You have to be nuts or crippled not to get away from the ocean.scruffyboy wrote:Now that you mention it... Wouldn't mind seeing Osama tied to a palm in the middle of a Cat. 5 storm
I met a couple from outside Galveston at Regusci Winery in Napa last week. I think the place was called the Peninsular. If so, I hope their home, which they said was built with hurricane proof with 130 mph shatter resistant windows and other state-of-the-art architectural innovations is OK.
their website in Pasadena is down. Pasadena is SE of Houston

Hurricanes
There's a LOT of us here (Keys) that wait till the storms get closer so we can see where they're actually going to be headed. If we'd evacuated with the non-residents it would have meant hours and hours snarled in traffic and spending a whole BUNCH of cash that we just don't have to spare for hotels.
Unless there's a 80% chance or better that we're gonna get a direct hit? Most of us just hunker down and wait it out. Ike just pissed and farted on Key West for a few hours then headed to Texas. If the track had held and it looked like we were going to get hit? I would have been out of here in a heartbeat. This time of year I keep my van (VW camper) gassed up, the water tank full and non-perishable food on hand just in case.

I like Ike, too!
For those too young to remember Ike was the nickname of the guy who picked Richard Nixon to be his running mate in the fifties. He also helped win WWII before we had the bomb. "I like Ike" was his winning campaign slogan. When leaving office he warned us about the military industrial complex and we ignored him at our own peril today as now the MIC is running things.

I have! 2 in fact, plus 3 tropical storms! (Erin & Opal, 1995, Pepsicola, FL)scruffyboy wrote:I would guess that you've never been through a hurricane?
I disagree. Follow these simple rules & you will have a blast.scruffyboy wrote:It's NOT much fun.
1-Stock up a two week supply of food, water, & booze (& mind altering substances if you are so inclined) at the beginning of hurricane season.
2- When the hurricane is confirmed (or damned likely) to hit where you live (24-36 hours), cover the windows with plywood or another suitable material.
3-GET OUT OF THE FLOOD ZONE. That is to say, if you are in a place that can flood, go somewhere else. A friends house on higher ground is a great choice. This does not mean try to drive 6 hours inland. The wind will still get there and you will be stuck in the traffic with everyone else trying to drive there. I mean your buddy/relatives house on the higher side of town.
4-Hunker down, drink till the room spins as fast as the hurricane, eat something every now and then, sleep with your friend you never thought of that way, and drink some more.
5-Repeat step four as needed till the storm passes.
6-Drink and/or consume mind altering substances and wander around marveling at the destruction nature hath wrought.
7-Begin cleanup, moving your business to a new location that still has a roof.
**Disclaimer**
This is not meant to make light of those oh so thoroughly fucked by hurricanes over the years, unless, of course, they were foolish enough to not get out of the flood plain when/if they had the chance. This is based solely on the authors experiences and does not represent any other person or corporation.

When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

...sounds like burning man....
i love hurricanes.
i don't love the destruction of lives and such but nature is the ruler of all.
hurricane gilbert in jamaica was tough.
hurricane gloria in CT was fun.
hurricane bob in martha's vinyard sunk our charter boat and made for quite a party. bloody mary's and backgammon.
my pop's in boca so he's got it down to a science.
i would NEVER live in a flood plain or less than 25 feet above sea level within a mile of the ocean. visit? sure. invest in a home there? hail no!

blow.
That hurricane hit Houston because it was supposed to hit Houston.
It was God's will that Houston be punished for voting for a one time governor who became one of the biggest mass murderers in US history for the number of felons he had killed in prison coupled with starting a war of occupation in another country that was predicated on a series of elaborate, documentable lies.
That and he hates the Oilers just like the rest of the country does.

I may not be beautiful but...
Don't hate me because I was raised in Houston...
I'm just glad my family down there is ok. They didn't leave but they were not in an evacuation zone either. I thought they were all crazy (but, then, I've thought that for many years now...) for staying. I like Ike because he (it?) turned a few degrees NE at the last minute. Sorry Louisiana...
but family comes first for me.
A few of the reasons I moved to this part of CO: no hurricanes, earthquakes or floods - YAY!!
P.S. I only hate the Oilers because they sold out. I burned all my Luv Ya Blue t-shirts and foam fingers when the losers left. Little did I know it was foreshadowing my future Burning Man experience...
P.P.S. Toolmaker, you're just the BEST at being prepared for emergencies, aren't ya?

Running with the bulls at the Fiesta de San Fermin isn't too bad. At least they don't fly through the air. I was on my way to Peru in '75 driving into Mazatlan at the same time Huricane Olivia arived; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Pacif ... ane_season
It even blew down the high-tension power lines. Shit in the air everywhere.

I don't post things because I believe that they are the absolute truth. I post them because I believe that they should be considered.
