Camp Chicago.. Come Join

Post by Mr.? » Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:54 pm

I have been to BM 4 times and would consider myself a "hardcore" burner (what ever that means). I love this event more than outsiders can even understand, and that is why I have a special relationship with fellow burners. I currently live in the bay area and love all the BM related events that take place around here, however my father has fallen very ill and I am moving home to be around him for the final chapter of his life. He lives in central Illinois middle way between Chicago and St. Louis.
Currently I have a mix of friends that go to the desert with me every year, (that number has grown in the last two years) and depend on me taking care of the camp needs every year. This last year (08) was my first year NOT camping next to, or with another group, of people. I was able to get financially reimbursed from each member to pay for everything we needed.
This next year will be my first driving from the Midwest to the event.
I guess you could say this is a casting call for any like minded people who are looking to join a camp, collaborate with me or even let me and my group join with yours.
What I'm looking for is someone within driving distance to help with the preperation over the next 11 months and sharing the drive next year.
I will be building a 22' dome, using scaffolding for a tower and designing a camp art project that centers around duplicating a city skyline.
It should be fun! Any takers or know of anyone in the midwest that would like to join/help a camp?
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

You might want to talk to Joel the Ornery. He's Illinois. I'm not sure if he attends, but he might be able to put you on the trail of local people. There is certainly a lot of lively people in Michigan, if that helps. But when you said Chicago Camp this is what I thought of:
HOG Butcher for the World,
Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,
Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler;
Stormy, husky, brawling,
Camp of the Big Shoulders:

They tell me you are wicked and I believe them, for I
have seen your body-painted women under the gas lamps
luring the raver boys.
And they tell me you are crooked and I answer: Yes, it
is true I have seen the gunman kill and go free to
kill again.
And they tell me you are brutal and my reply is: On the
faces of women and children I have seen the marks
of wanton hunger.
And having answered so I turn once more to those who
sneer at this my city, and I give them back the sneer
and say to them:
Come and show me another city with lifted head singing
so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning.
Flinging magnetic curses amid the toil of piling job on
job, here is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the
little soft cities;

Fierce as a dog with tongue lapping for action, cunning
as a savage pitted against the wilderness,
Bareheaded,
Shoveling,
Wrecking,
Planning,
Building, breaking, rebuilding,
Under the smoke, dust all over his mouth, laughing with
white teeth,
Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young
man laughs,
Laughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs who has
never lost a battle,
Bragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse.
and under his ribs the heart of the people,
Laughing!
Laughing the stormy, husky, brawling laughter of
Youth, half-naked, sweating, proud to be Hog
Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with
Railroads and Freight Handler to the Playa.
Fuck, I think that site I got the text from is wrong. Isn't it arc-lights or something like that. Something that only existed for a few years and that would be fun to redo on the playa, because no one's ever seen it?

Poof.

Or you could have a shrine to Mrs. O'Leary's Cow.

I have plently of skills building and designing things so my skills would be in direct interest for you hopefully. Anyway give me a pm back with more info.

Camp Chicago is now Spontaneous Planning Camp!...
Our mission is to teach the community of Burning Man how to build basic structures for the playa. We are going to have workshops everyday to show off our structure, and teach people how to build a geodesic dome, tesgritity shade structure (like the one seen here - www.bweebweebwee.com), quonset hut made from PVC and lot's of other camp ideas that would have no other practical use in the default world... Maybe Useless Knowledge Camp would be better?
I need help however... I need the community to get involved and share their own ideas. I'm hoping for an open workshop where others come and share their useless knowledge with everyone.

Speaking of Chicago, and my father, who passed away several years ago. Damn tobacco!! (I hope yours does better)

Anyway, I have always liked telling people from Chicago that my father was born on LSD, and if you are from Chicago, you understand!

Chicago a toddling town.

Dad is resting in peace, but he too had tobacco and asbestos to blame. I've been on LSD with bus full of nuns! How cool is that?

Well listen to the statement, you said, "I've been on LSD with bus full of nuns!"

Yeah, that sounds way cool.

(and being that you know Chicago, you mean Lake Shore Drive)(or were your frying on a nun bus?)

I got on a bus one time on Michigan and Oak only to see it was filled with nuns going to Lincoln Park Zoo. I thought wow, I'm on LSD with a bus full of nuns! Was your dad born in a car on Lake Shore Dr. or he just lived there?
