The white-outs

Fucking white-outs, man.

They seemed to wick away moisture and patience equally and gave me a few "why do I do this?" moments this year.

I nearly lost my mind during set-up on Monday and bailed before the Burn on Saturday.

This was a tough year.

Me too! I thought I was the only one. They add to the feeling of being far from the familiar and comfortable and I think they do a lot to keep the yahoo numbers down.

I got set up monday morning, got in at dark and passed out drunk.

My guess is i was set up by 11am maybe. not really windy at that point....out on 2:00.....i loved the whiteouts, wish there were a couple more during the week.

guess my only problem with the white outs is worrying if my shade is going to hold up.. it did.. so were all good. Beer tastes better in a white out. Does alkali dust cause cancer?

Everything causes cancer. Enjoy.

Sometimes the white-outs are energizing, but not this year. We stuck it out, that's what room reservations you can't cancel in Reno do for ya. Even hauled the fuel out to the Man in the worst of the white-out on foot, the long way over to nine and out, following the lamp posts. I feel all tough and shit, but I was mighty miserable several times that week.

WE sliped out just as the wind come up Sat. Needed to get back.. The van was 2 inch deep in dust.. Have a new shelter design for 09.. It includes easer building.. Mon's wind would not let the shelter be.. It was Tues. before it was up.. Just keep telling peole how bad it was.. That will sort 'em out..

White-out really screwed our plans for Saturday. But we loved every moment of it.
-Dusty bloody maries served by nice people at next to Huge dome club, Best Blody Maries we ever tried
-Got lost in open playa
-We stumbled upon multiple art installations
-Took bunch of pictures
-Fell a sleep under our RV in full unty-dust gear in complete white out.
It was great!!!!

This is not dust, it's black pepper to cover the dust

Ya, cant say as I hate the dust storms either...yup, they push you to find out what your really made of....and sometimes thats the best lesson you learn out there!

Ive learned that I CAN do most anything in 60 mph winds with fine silt blowing.

I feel bad for our asthmatic's though...I know it screwed a couple of my good peeps health up.

This Monday was REALLY tough on me and my camp mates, because our structure was not 100% finished and most of us hadn't slept in almost two days. The winds came and my friend was like, "Hey Chicken should we anchor down that carport", and I was like "Naw, we only have about 5 more minutes to finish this side of the structure". Then my other friends was like, "Hey was is that!" as he pointed to the southern sky, and we were all like, "HOLLY SHIT". Then the whole thing came crashing down in a moment of defeat I was broken.
Dust storms teach you several things.
#1. What are you made of? Can you hang or are you defeated?
#2. Where is the best white out party?
#3. Tie every thing down as soon as it's erected!
#4. Where is the closest thing to climb and scream at the top of my dust filled lungs... "Is That all you Got PUSSY!!"

Do I like dust storms.... FUCK YA cause it's what I'm made of that counts.

Yup, I love dust storms! I wouldn't want one everyday but it's always nice to try to seal up your shade structure and invite lost souls in to wait it out. It's fun to know that we are all in this together (well except for the folks that need RVs).

To be honest, my virgin year at Burning Man, the dust storms really beat me up, however, every year I seem to enjoy them more and more. I still need eye protection but for some reason the dust does not hurt my lungs anymore.

I would be totally disappointed if there wasn't at least one whopper of a dust storm every year. I *love* the damn things. They test all of your engineering (or lack thereof)... plus one of the most fun things you can do is gear up, head out, and wander around lost in one.

Seriously -- some of my very best experiences at BM have been while wandering about in a storm. Don't fight it. Go with it.

Yes, that's really true. And the dust storms this year taught me that I was NOT made of dust.

(ok, maybe really tightly packed dust, but not the free-flying-lung-invading kind...)

They are fun, or if not, are rarely hot so they offer a chance to do some day sleeping to give you more energy for the night, which has far fewer dust storms.

They make people come together. They make you walk into a strange camp if you are out during one and meet people.

Their main downside -- OK, this is going to sound silly -- is the dust. In that it now gets on everything, far more than it does from a time on the playa without a big dust storm. So it adds a lot to your cleaning work, and is bad for certain kinds of gear like air filters and electronics etc. Nothing positive about that part of it. Yes, you have to expect lots of dust and lots of cleaning, but we could get by without lots and lots of dust and lots and lots of cleaning.

Otherwise the storms provide some of the most lasting memories of a playa week.
