i know a lot of devout christians.jkisha wrote:If people want to believe in fairy tales, more power too them. Trust me, I am missing nothing when it comes to religion.
I can't wait for Bill Mahr's new movie to come out next month!
none of them believe the adam and eve myth. none believe in a boogieman in the sky. and your little story about apollo is totally irrelevant. we aren't even discussing the same thing.
i can trust that you know what you want to know about religion. but missing nothing? i wonder if you would put any effort at all into understanding the vast amount of intellectual religious thought, ancient or current. it's a lot more fun to watch anti-religion documentaries and laugh at the uneducated masses and pat yourself on the back because you are so brilliant, isn't it?
but faced with a massively educated philosopher theologian professorial type throwing questions at you...?

Not to pick on you ygmir ,but where in the 2nd amendment does it say, "Guns"?ygmir wrote:

the term "assault weapon" is very wide ranging...............to wide for me.
I'd only say it'd apply to full-auto fire capability.........
It only sez, "The right to bear arms" there is nothing in it about "Guns"
And I know you don't endorse full automatic weapons. So why stop there which is why i commented on the Bazookaas and stuff.
Tactical first strike weapons is what we citizens should have!
Obama has taught over 14 years of harvard constitutional and political law. He knows damn well that if blacks had guns, then maybe the "Jim Crow" era wouldn't have happened, but blacks weren't allowed to own guns. Oh i'm sorry. Blacks in the south could have been able to carry and own guns if they could pass the Permitting Process of passing a test. Only if they were allowed to learn how to write and read. In some places, that didn't matter. The racist found ways circumvent the constitution.
Hey here is Huey, Obama's friend! What does Huey say about gun ownership and Obama!

The reaction to Black Panthers carrying guns openly around Oakland is what started modern gun control in California. Before 1967 you could carry any gun openly or concealed if no round was in the chamber, without permit. Seeing the Panthers with their shotguns made a lot of white people VERY nervous and the Mulford Act passed the CA legislature that year.
It was signed into law by Governor Ronald Reagan
The great communicator was a gun control activist! What do you Anti-Gun Control Republicans think of RayGun Now!

naive, no, i think not. perpetually confused, perhaps.jkisha wrote:Trust me my naive littleflower, been there, done that, over it.littleflower wrote: but faced with a massively educated philosopher theologian professorial type throwing questions at you...?
Now I am free to enjoy the lighter side.

i do not doubt that you have been there and done that. i figured as much when i wrote my last post.
and i am happy for you, having so contentedly reached such an enlightened state! i like happy people.
however ... the professorial type i know would never, ever suggest that he knows so much about anything. and that alone is enough for me to doubt your wisdom. there is simply too much to know when you are dealing with a subject like religion. a little humility wouldn't hurt, you know.

Arms is, as you suggest, a vague description of weaponry.
And, your points valid, and well thought out, IMHO.
I'd be fairly sure the writers meant "guns", but, would accept that they meant "arms" as such, since, the idea was protection of ones self and nation, and the freedoms given in the constitution. And, to ward off a tyrannical government from forcing it's will on "the people".
(HHHHMMMMMMM........pause for thought.......)
Of course, at the time, "arms" would entail perhaps guns, and cannons at most.....
Certainly, we've come up with many more means of destruction since then........
And,
for me,
therein lies the "rub"...........
Who draws the line where certain weapons are "ok" for an individual, or non governmental agency, to own?
I have no clear answer, only my "gut" feelings.........
I'd not be comfortable with the "Black Panthers" or "KKK" owning bazookas and tanks, rpg's, etc.........
But, I'd not have much trouble with my neighbors (where I live now anyway) having them..........
So,
I might lean to the widest definition as far as federal law goes, and, allow it, under the 10th amendment, to be further narrowed by states individually.........
AZ:
your point is quite thought provoking, for me anyway, thanks.........
it's quite the dilemma, in my mind, as to how to decide what is and is not ok, weapon wise, for people to own..........
It's interesting to see how some other nations approach this:
In the Czech republic, when I was visiting, you could buy any handgun, of any sort, you wanted over the counter, but, rifles were strictly regulated.
It was explained to me that rifles are the stuff of political assassinations, not handguns, and, that was the reason........
In some of Europe, you can own a tank, artillery piece, or warplane, but, not a hand held firearm...............
I think they said most can't afford to buy and operate the larger pieces, so, no threat.
I'm sure there are other examples..........
Seems it might be better regulating the people who can own anything, as opposed to the weapon itself...........criminal records, insanity, whatever? I dunno.........
Of course, the argument that (I paraphrase),"the price of freedom is danger" can be applied here, somewhat, as well.
I guess if you could somehow magically take all weapons away from everyone, it would make things "safer"........
But, until that happens, I'd like the ability to defend my family and country, however far fetched that notion may seem to others..........

Blacks in the south couldn't own guns?
That's news.
I guess all hunting was done with bows and arrows.
Where did anyone get the idea that gangsters can't get heavy arms just like anyone else?
They just aren't so subtle and the more sophisticated the weapon, the more support network is needed.
The automatic weapons thing is just silly.
How many minutes of automatic fire do you think one person can carry?

The founders means 'arms' as in weapons--they put no limit on it--likely because they could understand that ingenuity might one day make the 'gun' obsolete.
They also put no limit on WHAT you could own. From the smallest to the biggest.
I've got no problem with anyone having whatever weapon they want--so long as the same right applies to me.
At the time it was written, the people could be expected to be as well armed as the government. And we've let them take that away from us.

Probably at least part of the reason it's illegal (as if that matters to government now) to use the military for civil issues......without declaring marshal law.........

I think that the Panthers had some Agents Provocateurs among them to take them to a place where they could be used as a pretext for disarmament. Basic MO.

wow, I keep finding myself in agreement with you. I love that, that, we can agree and disagree, and, you don't come over and whoop me. I'm sensitive and delicate that way.........oh yeah, and frail........

Haven't finished reading the entire thread yet but I just found out or heard that Palin comes out of the most radical stream of US Born-Again Evangelism known as ‘Joel’s Army,’ an offshoot of what is called Dominionism and sometimes also called the Latter Rain cult or Manifest Sons of God.

i don't think so. i just read what kos wrote about this a month ago, and this sounds pretty creepy, alright... but he didn't seem to have any direct links that testify to palin's feelings for the radical ideas, so for all we know she goes to that church because she likes the people in the community. sort of like obama and his church, except that i don't see palin actually hanging out with crazy pastors. at least, not so far.DVD Burner wrote:Haven't finished reading the entire thread yet but I just found out or heard that Palin comes out of the most radical stream of US Born-Again Evangelism known as ‘Joel’s Army,’ an offshoot of what is called Dominionism and sometimes also called the Latter Rain cult or Manifest Sons of God.

Guardian Anglers
Does this means she considers guardian angels a substitute for health care?
It's not the same thing, but I went guardian angling once in seattle.
That's where you fish for thieves with a wallet on a fishing line from the back of a pickup.
It's very disappointing when you have to throw them back, because they're too small.

Don't know about which particular log she crawled out from under, but her current church is closely tied to Jews for Jesus, which most real Jews fear and hate with a passion.DVD Burner wrote:Haven't finished reading the entire thread yet but I just found out or heard that Palin comes out of the most radical stream of US Born-Again Evangelism known as ‘Joel’s Army,’ an offshoot of what is called Dominionism and sometimes also called the Latter Rain cult or Manifest Sons of God.
