New girl on the block with a will to be weird...
'Allo everyone...
Me:
19 years old, half Sicilian and half Irish, rambling groovily through my third year of college in Claremont, southern Califo'nia. Journalism major and poet for pleasure. Friend and/or lover to several veteran Burners who think that I would fit in with the tribe. I think I'm ready for my first taste in '09.
I'm a writer, guitar player, djembe drummer, sensual spirit and free thinker. Some favorite conversation topics include: existentialism, Pagan spirituality, classic Sci Fi, camping/hiking/back-to-the-landing, astronomy, rock n'roll, and psychedelics.
I've been inhaling the literature on the official BM site, but preparation is seeming a tad overwhelming! : / Thankfully I've got a year to get through it all right? Ideally I'd like to go with a group, but I've no idea who that group will be. If any souls in or vaguely near the Los Angeles black hole are interested in hanging out, trading ideas, and possibly hitching a ride out to BRC in my Honda CRV, drop me a line, grazie!
Peace,
RockinRose : )

Welcome!!!
...
...
...weirdo.
Sometimes a year seems like a long time to prep. Others it seems entirely too short. Finding a group shouldn't be too difficult. Check with around in your area via this board and the regionals sectionof the website. It's interesting how once you start researching and prepping for your first Burn, you begin to stumble across people who are also going.
Oh... and read the first-timer's guide!! Over and over.

ygmir: sweet, what did I win? is it shiny?
DVD Burner: I'm not sure what the degrees of weird are...cute weird, trippy weird, creepy weird, and holy-shit-get-away from me weird?
jkisha: thanks, I'm liking it so far.
LeChatNoir: thanks for the links! and yes, I am a weirdo, what about it? : p
gyre: Gotta admit I have no idea what you said...but actually managing to fuse Gaelic and Italian into a real-ish looking language is impressive. If you're asking what "back to the landing" is, I totally made that expression up. it refers to people who look at the thick smog hovering above the average city, think "fuck it!" and go live in the backwoods of Montana or somewhere.

I guess I was to cryptic........
you won, IMHO, the "most fun post I've seen in quite a while" prize.........
It's not shiny, but, could be, I guess......
The prize is whatever you want it to be, I'd think.
Certainly, you've won general admiration, or curiosity, from at least some of us.
In getting ready to "burn"......you can't have to much knowledge, you can, it seems, have to much stuff..........
Good luck with your preparations, certainly, posting here will garner you much information, some of it even accurate, and, at times, snarky.........grin.........

I didn't even make the oz connection.
It was the closest thing I could find in gaelic to welcome home.
My first sig line was
Unlike Cinderella
I left both slippers
A line of poetry by Elise Masur.
And literal, not metaphorical, when she wrote it.
I thought you were referring to that until I got the oz line.
(I have been known to wear a full bunny suit on cold evenings.
One has to remember one is wearing it.
Confronting prowlers as an ak-equipped bunny seems to disrupt their milieu.)

Heya. I live a couple cities over, in Upland. We do a lot of camping, outdoor adventure and burningman style parties and events around here. We also work on a lot of projects. I think we're building a geodesic dome next weekend (4th-5th oct.). We also work on art cars, costumes and other random crap. If you want to get a feel for some things before the burn let me know and I can stick you on our mailing list of things that are going on every month. You can also check out Gigsville, which are our friends as well.
Our groups is older than you are. Mid 20's on up probably averaging in the lower 30's for age. I don't know many active groups around here closer to your age but most of the events do have some others youngin's joining in. In the burningman style I guess that means it up to you to start bringing in some 20ishyear burningman style events.

Wow, monocles, bunny slippers, and the Wizard of Oz. I'm diggin' this.
MikeVDS: Sweet, definitely stick me on the Tiki Fuckos list thing. I added myself to a couple of the Gigsville ones already. Would love to chill with y'all and get involved with stuff. Being a youngun isn't a big deal...I'd bet money that some of you old folk are cool anyway. : p I could try to rope in friends of mine whose eyes light up whenever they hear the magic words "Burning Man" but who stop short of actually *doing* shit. Been guilty of that myself up 'til now...no longer, I say...

Yeah age doesn't matter much for most things. We do have people of all ages, from 7 months to 50+ years. Camping, canoeing, rock climbing, camping, etc, age is pretty meaningless. It's the partying where, for single people, the flirting part becomes more important and it's nice to have a large pool of options.
If you want on our e-mail list I need your e-mail address, which you can pm me. I manage the list so I take people on or off when they want. Right now there isn't much going on, on the list. Maybe a Halloween party or two, but it should pick back up once we all recover.
I think we're talking about doing a party Thanksgiving weekend, then a big one the weekend after New Years. New Years will probably be a repeat of last year.

Do you add bells and blinky lights to the antlers during the holidays?
I want a pair.

Hi Rose, Welcome!!
Weird is Good!! You're gonna love this place!!
You are on the right track, looking for groups to share the Burn experience with, keep at it. And also, although you have read it, print that Survival Guide and READ IT AGAIN!! And again, and again, and again. I was a virgin this year and am so glad that I did print the guide and read it over and over. My man thought I was being obssesive but after we got there and were so well prepared he realized that my study habit paid off! We had a blast!
So welcome home Rose, there is a bus stop for weird on every corner!
