Does anyone remember Draka - the amazing metal huge dragon vehicle? Her second or third year on the playa, she was used as a public transport vehicle - they'd added another 'car' or two to the original MV to add lots of seating/riding capacity, she ran a 'regular' route. It would be interesting to know what the operator's experience was...

Anyone know where I can get a (NO) Vacancy neon light for cheap. Looks like it may help for this year. I'd put the space yacht on a route for while but if it became bull shit I would be out of there straight away.
All it takes is organization and outreach.
I suggest a stop at all even numbered streets driving 50' off the Esplanade. It would not be right to not have a connection point so here is how I would do it. If you want to get to the man first you have to get to 3-6 or 9 at Esplanade and from there you catch a second route to the man. I would start with 3 routes. One counter clockwise and one clockwise around the Esplanade. The third route would be Man, 3, Man, 6, Man, 9, Man, Temple, Man and back to 3.
Be ready for not involved MV's to mess with the system.

I'm actually changing the name to Space \ˈä-də-tē\ . It is my mutant vehicle. I'm working on making it less bland now that I know it will operate on playa.

Thanks Isotopia!
That would be fairly easy to build out of el wire. I'll get really good rude comments when I reach my passenger capacity. Maybe I will fight back with a second "sign."

[quote="SpaceCowboy"]I agree with MikeVDS in that it could be a gift to our community to operate some sort of public transportation. I really like that idea. My concern is if you call yourself “public transportationâ€

I think some kind of shuttle system, at least out to the temple and back would be a great idea. As a senior citizen in the default world, it's hard for duffers like me to ride a bike out there, much less walk. This year was terrible for getting around. I think as the city is growing so much bigger the last few years, we have to deal with the same kinds of situations that come up in the default world. I've often wondered how people with handicaps get around out there. Really, even just a shuttle from center tent, stop at the man, stop at the temple, then turn around and come back. That would get a lot of people out there who normally wouldn't be able to make a trek of that distance. Most importantly it would GET people out there, and I think that is whar BM LLC wants, draw people from the city out to the far reaches.

OR !! They could make a "bus stop" at each plaza, preferably by a chill space, and whatever art car wanted to stop by and pick people up there, could. Rules are.. the art car would have to bring everyone back to the bus stop. ( sucks to be dropped off FAR FAR away from your camp or bike )

Yeah, that's a good idea. A shuttle from each of the the plazas. Out to the man, make a drop off or a pick up, then to the temple same thing, get on or get off. It's forward looking. Like all things, Black Rock City has to moveahead with the times. When there were only 5000 people there it was easier to get around, when you start moving up to 50,000 people, the whole geography changes. The first two years I went to the Burn, I didn't even HAVE a bike, I walked everywhere, out to the temple, everywhere. Oh I was much younger then.....I'm older than that now...

I think it's a great idea. Riding around the Playa on my bike was always a highlight. But this year was a real bitch. We were miserable after three days, and missed out on a lot of things because people in our group didn't want to ride. I remember one day peddling back from the Deep End in the blazing heat with a horrible headwind and getting bogged in the sand and thinking "I'm actually miserable right now". A first for me there.
Everyone kept saying "don't ride, we'll catch an art car". But I don't think it is fair for the art cars to be put under that kind of pressure. A public transit system is a great idea.

Right, art cars are privately owned, therefore riders have no assurance they aren't going to get hauled out somewhere and not be able to get back. A city owned jitney service would be ideal. Say...only from the Esplanade out. It wouldn't need to function in the neighborhoods themselves, because even this year it was easy getting from KCar to the Esplanade, but after that...wow, I was afraid I was going to have a stroke one day trying to peddle. Say, something that leaves the Esplanade on the hour, and comes back from the temple on the half hour. It could be pretty too, it doesn't have to be a blight on the surroundings.

Well, I don't think we need anything quite as fancy as that. A couple of buses maybe, one coming and one going. Ot even a few pick up trucks. They could be run on exactly the same route all the time to reduce damage to the playa. Some structure as to routes, etc, would make the system run smoother and reduce marks on the surface. Maybe if they left the 3 6 and 9 plaza on the hour or half hour and stayed on the road, there would be little disruption of foot and bicycle traffic.

New for 2009 in Black Rock City....
The Yellow Golf Cart Program
Yellow Golf Carts will be introduced on the playa in 2009 for the first time. The idea behind the program (like those in Amsterdam and other progressive municipalities) is that designated Golf Carts are shared within the community and available for all to enjoy. We know that the proposal will bring fresh challenges, but we decided to give it a try since there has been so much whining on Eplaya about having to ride bikes or walk everywhere.
The first challenge is to set reasonable expectations on use of Yellow Golf Carts. The front-page article in the Gate Edition will contain a list of usage guidelines, such as: Only use a Yellow Golf Cart if you don't have access to another golf cart; only use it for a short period of time; and no "cruising."
This first year 1000 Yellow Golf Carts will be purchased and additional generators will be setup at multiple spots around the city to recharge the Yellow Golf Carts. The cost of the golf carts and generators will only be $5,000,000. The funds will come from a slight increase in tickets (beginning at $450 and ending at $700 in 2009).
While it won't support 50,000 participants, the program is intended to supplement the thriving golf cart culture that already exists in Black Rock City, and help meet the need of the helpless, clueless masses that now fill our fair city.
