reluctant Canadian newb becomes entranced lifelong hopeful

Post by drutter » Mon Sep 29, 2008 6:32 am

I went with my gf (a BM natural) and my friend (a veteran) and fell in love with the idea and the feeling of Burning Man. I was afraid and unsure and skeptical but I emptied my expectations as best I could when I arrived. The 12 hour dust storm killed my spirit. I'm a strong guy and I've been in some harsh conditions, but that was insane. I thought to myself, we're here on PURPOSE!? I saw nothing of value, just torture, dust, dehydration, and lack of energy. But by the second night I was starting to get it, and on Friday (my birthday) they both took me out drinking and dancing and riding art cars. The Robot Heart art car made my night every time I ran across it. I made a friend named Malette, a girl by herself who was struggling with the desert and the situation a bit as well. We got more into it together, at the same time as we got to know each other. What an experience the whole thing was. It's inspired my creative side for the first time in over 10 years. I want to contribute something next year, somehow. I need to provide something from myself. I need to become a little part of Burning Man.

I've got much more to say, but that's plenty for an opening paragraph. :D

Hi and welcome to eplaya. That dust storm on Monday this year was something! I'm glad you had a good time after all. Welcome Home.

Thanks for the welcome. :) I do miss "home" a lot. Living here in "the other world" is alright, but there aren't enough flashing lights, random hugs, or techno. :?

Hello and Welcome! The eplaya is a great place to hang out but it certainly does lack the physicality of "Home". I mean, a dust storm just isnt the same here as it is there!!!

Glad you found your way home, drutter see you round!

I also find some people get caught up in the typical internet infighting and non-BM ideals and bring it here to the eplaya to get in fights or drama. Not you guys (thanks for the welcome) but in other areas. I'm trying to keep life away from the playa as BM-infused as I can! Gonna keep it going all year if possible. :)

You know, it is true that there does seem to be a bit more snarkiness and short shots fired on this here eplaya, compared to Home. Could it be cause we feel more free to speak our feelings behind the mask of a computer screen? Or could it be more likely that this way you don't get an immediate, physical, smack upside the head, when you act like an ass!!

Regardless, while I certainly enjoy my time here on this eplaya, I am counting the days and preparing to return Home. :D

This too was my virgin year. Arriving Monday at the start of that gnarly dust storm was quite the challenge. Having read everything I could over the previous year, talking to whomever I ran across to get their perspective, advice etc gave me some insight as to what to expect. But no amount of preparation could have prepared me for what is Burning Man. I just chilled during the storm with goggles and mask on, learned to cover my beer with a finger  And then just enjoyed the rest of the Burn. It was wonderful, strange in a great way, inspiring, surreal and has def. wetted my appetite for more. I just recently attended my first decomp and already miss "home". Hopefully I will be able to take in various Burner play-dates during the rest of the year to keep my rush going :D
I get to drive the ambulance how fast?!!

ha ha.. reading this thread has given me an idea...
out on the Playa I saw a guy at the greeters station vacuuming the Playa; it was calm, but he was creating dust that engulfed the vehicles coming in....
I brought home a bucket of Playa Dust with me this year...
SF decomp is next week end.... hmmmm
vacuuming some Playa dust and creating a mini white out in the middle of the city....

Oh Girl! The dust you brought home, decomp party, you simply HAVE to find a way to make that dust into a storm!!! That would be so sweeet! I bet you would see everyone stop, look around and say "here it comes" :D
