Burner Communities After the Collapse of The System

Post by snowleopard » Wed Oct 08, 2008 2:23 am

So this is my first time posting to this forum, and I have to admit that I'm a newbie to the community after only attending one burn. My first impression of Burning Man was that "This was the future". It was a society that I'd only dreamed about - a real-world example of a low-impact, sustainable community.

Looking at what's going on with the financial crisis, it's clear that we're heading towards an event on the scale of or exceeding the great depression in severity. If you'd like to get into the economics theory behind what's occuring, I'm happy to do so, but I'm sure most of the community here have long-since realized that civilization has been headed towards a catastrophic event for sometime. What I'd like to discuss is what happens after the financial system collapses... after people can't live off of credit any more... after all of our goods stop being shipped in from china. I think there's a good chance that the American government as we know it might not exist by the end of this. And I can't think of a better man than Obama to tackle this, but unfortunately I think this might be way over even his head. A few intellectuals have talked of a senario where there's a run on the banks, or where we go to the ATM and can't get any more money out.. when we have to once again be totally self-reliant, producing our own goods and growing are own food. Have you thought about how will you survive if it were to come to this?

Burning Man has established a model for how we can live, in small communities of mutual respect and cooperation. I believe that if Burners were to rely on each other, the shift to whatever new society awaited us on the other side of this transition will be a much smoother one. I'd like to start a dialog on what we'd do if worse came to worse. Would it be possible to ban together, and to form mini-communities in each state? What would such a future look like?

first: welcome Snowleopard!

I understand, and agree with some of what you're saying........The one disconnect with the overall BRC scene and a "real world" scenario is the generators and water in, water out...........

A large number of folks "roughing it" at BM do so with gens and RV's.......and water and sewage holding, which is limited.

Those all need servicing......

Without those things, I think the stress level would be huge on a large community such as BRC.
It would also need to be somewhere else........IMHO......
As stresses increased, through discomfort etc. I think it'd break down to being just like any other group..........
But,
if done on a small scale, lots of villages, with a decent amount of separation, It, IMHO, would work fine.
By small, I mean dozens, maybe up to a few hundred.
Located near good water sources, and the ability to handle sewage........
The rest can be handled........
IMHO..............

I wouldn't use a drug-soaked naked orgy of coflagration in the desert a model for society at large, as fun as it might be for a week or two.

Yep, water and sewage... and guns... lots of guns. Raise your standard of living just slightly higher than the other people with and then you realize why you have guns. Now tell me more about saving the environment and how I can moop my way to a better future. Welcome to Nevada, the Battle Born state.

A couple of good points have been made.

"if done on a small scale, lots of villages, with a decent amount of separation, It, IMHO, would work fine. By small, I mean dozens, maybe up to a few hundred. Located near good water sources, and the ability to handle sewage."

Yeah, this is what I had in mind. Small communities (up to about 100 people) of like minded people. Small populations would help with the sewage problem... anyone stayed in a home with an out-house before? It's good fertilizer too, if done right. Most people are too detached from natural living unfortunately. Too dependent on the system that is collapsing out from under them. This wouldn't work too well in the desert. Sorry Nevada. There are tons on places in could be done along the cascades and the rockies. If the system does collapse, I'm going to claim some national forest land... lots of clean water sources in OR & WA. And yeah, the guns idea isn't too bad, especially after reading this:

hehee...yup sounds like the true Utopia...

But were no where near doing it 365.
The amount of $$ that goes into making BM SOOOOOO appealing ...has been made in defaultia...we work hard all year long to bring all that "majic" to the dessert for one week.

It would be ALOT different if it was a 365. There wouldnt/couldnt be a party everynight....you'd run outa booze!
(Just the most obvious conclusion here)

Where would we get our ice?
poopers
h2o
power
etc...etc..

They actually do have 365 Utopia's... There called Communes, and there on almost every edge of every civilized city all over the United states and beyond.

But they have RULES!
Names pinemom, but my friends call me "Piney".

Study your favorite third-world country for clues on how to survive the Hell Shit comfortably.
Yes, you will have to lower your expectations, but you one day learn to love it.

At least in the P.I. they don't have restrictions on "Mutant Vehicles".
