*walks in (has obviously been out in the cold wet rain all morning) goes over to the bar and gets a shot of Bacardi 151. Washes the glass, then pours a pint of mead. Warms it up, then goes and sits down.*

So, I haven't made a batch of melomel <-- (damn it all spell check, that is so a word) here in default world in a while. I've done raspberry, strawberry, apple, and kiwi. I'm kinda getting the feeling that it's time to dust off the ol' brewing equipment and make a batch. Any suggestions as to what flavor I might try this time?

*ssssssip* ahhhh

Jet Set;

I've been saving Elderberries for just such a project. I make mead at times, and, like using champagne yeast, for a little bubbly action........
so, making it melomel with elderberries.......? yum.......
(my spell check doesn't like it either)...

Any berry is good, IMHO........

if you have extra, I'd appreciate a glass....or tankard........

hmmm, Elderberries.....
Interestingly enough last night my dad had mentioned some Elderberry wine he and mom tried once. Elderberry it is I guess. As long as Price Chopper has them that is otherwise I'll have to come up with something else. Pomegranate is one I wanted to make at some point as well.

I've always just used some sweet mead yeast. It didn't occur to me till just now that if I wanted some fizz to it I could just do like when making beer and provide a little sugar (in this case honey) for a secondary fermentation in the bottle.

*gets up washes the now empty glass and heads for the door*

Ygmir I don't know if there's any way to mail this stuff, if there is I'll gladly send some your way. If not, if you're ever in my neck of the woods you're more than welcome to stop by for some.

thanks for the offer, if I get out there........but, I doubt it can be mailed.......

Yest for mead:
I'd use champagne yeast from the start. I tried the secondary fermentation and it ruined it. and, no bubbles.........

my last batch was nice and lightly bubbled,,,,,,very good........

Ale yeast works pretty good also if you like it a little sweeter.
If you don't have sweet mead yeast.

Keg it and you don't have to worry about carbonation.
A lot less work then bottling.

*Walks in and goes and gets a pint of Guinness*

Hmmm, perhaps I'll just stick to the tried and true then. I once made a batch of red ale from a kit. I had made it before with excellent results. So, as an experiment, I added some boiled honey and water instead of the provided dextrose sugar. The result was a fantastic tasting beer, however, the instant you tried to pour it into a glass it exploded into head and it didn't subside. At the time I didn't exactly look up the recommended ratio when substituting honey for sugar. As such I do want to try that again and see if I can get it right.

Both good tips that I'll keep in mind. As far as availability of the yeast goes, lets just say that I don't live anywhere near a brewing supply store of any sort so anything of that nature I have to acquire online. So, if one place doesn't have it typically somewhere else does. More Beer/More Wine/More Coffee is where I typically go.

As far as bottling goes I prefer using using growlers or handles or something in the 1/2 gallon range. I've done it with beer bottles before and lemme tell ya at five gallons a batch that's a crap load of washing and sanitizing and filling and capping. I like the 1/2 gallon size because I don't typically drink a whole lot so I usually give it away. At that size though it's not such a huge amount of prep work.

well I actually spoke to soon...they (political threads) had all dropped lower...but their coming back up....so is the throw up in my mouth a little!

...I hate politics.

of which I hate so very little in life...would have to say politics is the only thing on my hate list in years!

Its just not done correctly.

Too bad the dumb ass politicians couldnt just play a fair game of actually telling the American people ONLY what their proposals are...instead of mud slinging, lying and name bashing each other!!!!!

None of the above~
