Your Dryer Is Crying

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:18 pm

When I got home from the playa I just ran all my playa caked clothes and costumes through my washer and dryer. Then the heater element burned out on the latter.

The guy who sold me the new part for $70 told me they die mostly when working too hard as the air stops circulating when there's lint and "debris" clogging the machine. Sure enough, I vacuumed out the exhaust and plenty of playa inside the squirrel cage of the blower too. He told me I should clean the thing out every year, and since I'm a burner, I think I'll do just that.

Since your a burner too, when's the last time you had your dryer serviced, hmmmm?

Wow. Usually it's the washers that die first.

The last old dryer I took out, upon disassembly, turned out to contain many of my old socks. The thing really WAS eating them!!

That's funny.

Make sure you have metal vent hose with adequate gaps for heat.
Still a good idea to clean them.
I know someone with a washer with no lint filter.

Actually what I didnt know Monsoir Jelly fish....was that on top of wiping the lint out out of the tray(dryer) that you must actually wash it with soap and water about once a month.

This I dint know either...apparently the lint/fabric softners/detergents/material particles get to be a fuser in the lint catch mechinism... ie...blocks up the mesh beyond the human eyes ability to detect.
So if you wash it with a dish soap like "dawn' it breaks down the miniscule particals that actually block the heat from escaping the dryer drum.
Plus your clothes and costumes will last longer cause their not getting overly heated!

boy did that ever sound like a cliff claven bit of usless information! ha ha

Over the years "25", I have worked many house fires from dryer vents.

All dryers are poorly designed..
They need to be partly disassembled and cleared of lint.
There are companys that provide this service.

Dryer vents that run "under" houses are the worest. They collect dampness then lint.. This also cost you a bunch more to dry..

Our vent runs up about 30 inches.. I have to clean it twice a year

You could maybe try hand-washing, and dry-lining them the first time around, and then machine washing them to possibly cut down on debris and the like.

When I got my snazzy new washer and dryer from Sears, I paid for the maintenance plan ... service guy comes out and takes care of it for me. So I can blame Sears when my house burns down.

Thanks for the tip, Jellmeister.

Post-college, a bunch of us dudes shared a house and kept a dryer going practically night and day.

When the Sears guy came out to look at it, he discovered a hole in the filter the size of a nickel. He removed the back to take a look and inside there was so much lint inside, it looked like the dryer had become a giant jello mold and the "jello" was a smaller dryer made of lint.

Good times, good times...

Some I've had were like a brush the water went through.
Messy to clean but eliminates most of the stuff that floats around the dryer.
Most people that have them don't know they are there.

Seriously, anyone with plastic vent hose needs to change it.
I think you can add a trap after the dryer to catch lint and allow cleanout.
Really helpful with a long pipe.
I've seen vents with a really good filter that vents into the house in winter.
I don't know if that's worth the effort.

...heheeee... Your on Mister jelly Fish!

another thing I try to do...is airspray out some of the playa dust prior to washing machine....

Then in first run in wash mach. I use 1 cup of vinegar NO soap.
Then one more time through normally w/ soap. It breaks down the playa in the cloth(not to mention is easier on the cloth).
...and then
...and then....
heheeee
anyone?
anyone?

I use a contraption that allows me to divert the dryer air into the house, and, uses nylons clamped on the end as a filter.
It works great, and, is fun to watch......
one thing, though: It adds a lot of moisture to the air in the house. It can even make the windows sweat......

Disinfecting the washer a couple times a year isn't a bad idea either.

dryer is crying, washer is happy

Post by Artemis » Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:47 am

Maybe the dryer is crying  cuz he's jealous of the all the attention the washer gets on the spin cycle. Try sitting on the dryer next time and maybe he won't cry?

Also, throwing the stuff onto hangers/clothesline and beating/vacuuming some of the dust out before throwing in the wash.
I'm a lintscreen cleanin' fool just myself, and a former tweaker i know opens up his washer and dryer twice a year and vacuums and wipes out the interior.
He doesn't do speed anymore, but he still has the cleanest house of anyone i know. *snork*

Thats cool Honeyfire. Glad you kicked the crank. I created a character a while back named Kranky the Klown who tried to push it on truckers. Check it out:

I thought surely there would be some kind of photoshopped image involving "servicing a dryer" somewhere, but I can't find one.

I don't know anything about dryer repair but... what the hell is a squirrel cage on a dryer? Is it as inhumane as it sounds? Poor, poor toasty squirrels.. :<
