Statistics...?

Post by Bluetality » Mon Oct 27, 2008 11:06 am

I was curious if anyone knew random stats about BM, like the amount of rapes, deaths, thefts, arrests, O.D.'s and the like...

and no, I'm not being a Johnny Raincloud and expecting bad things. I've just seen enough mentions of those types of things happening there via eplaya, and was curious if anyone had solid numbers to go with the hearsay.

It used to be that this information would be circulated somewhere by email or bulletin board, but I don't know how we'd find it. It would be crimes plus treatments at the medical tents. Most of the crimes would be arrest for drug-related stuff. Most medical emergencies would be dehydration and run-ins with rebar.

I found it interesting, too. BRC is a nice sized city, and there are crimes committed. Have you done a search here on eplaya? People reporting the stats from prior years may have cited sources.

Look in the Afterburn reports. The injuries will be in the ESD section. I don't know how much they'll tell you about crimes or where that would be. Rape will be underreported. (If you are concerned about rape at burning man, may I suggest that you google "Bureau of Erotic Discource" to find the group who's trying to educate people of the risks and some possible strategies. [/PSA])

The scarey thing is that if the posters on this board put our heads together, we could come up with the death number. Probably even without Badger's help.

A few souls have passed on due to BM I believe,
Kathryn Lampman come to mind - and a suicide in 2007. On playa at that.

If an accident occurs at BM and the patient expires in Reno wouldnt that still eb attributed to BM?

That has happened, and Maid Marian has not counted those as deaths at Burning Man.

from the Afterburn reports 2001 to present -6 deaths total. One suicide, one ArtCar incident, one airplane incident, 3 heart attacks - one of those died off-playa after being in a coma for 6 weeks.

Pre-2001, I think there was a guy who decided to firewalk the man coals. He died off playa in Reno.

hmmm...and wasn't there a man that also committed suicide that year? Or am I confused? I never heard of the women's death.

Crime statistics have to be collected by local law enforcement, so whatever jurisdiction the playa falls into, you could check with them and they'd have to disclose it. Though it'd probably take awhile to find out where it is, since it's kind of in a gray area of jurisdiction between BLM, county and local governments.

That and anytime you want to talk to one of those guys it'll be filling out forms in triplicate and waiting 7-8 months for a response.

Well, thanks for the info, and suggestions. As far as the death toll goes, I'm shocked at how low it is, considering how large that city is, and how much drugs seem to be circulated (whether people want them or not). I saw the B.E.D. site, and I think it's real cool what they are about. I'm not concerned about rape at BM anymore than I am here in my own city, and it's not exactly pleasantville, haha.

I'm going to research the afterburn reports more extensively, if I find something solid, I'll post it back in here.

No, the suicide was 07. Moisture Pup could confirm, but let's not bother him.
Kathy Lampman was the same year as the plane crashes. One had only minor injuries, but everybody on board was ESD. It was kind of a freaky year to be in ESD, and I swear Scott went into an emotional tail-spin. Kathy Lampman's death was a big factor in my joining this board.
One of the heart attacks was the guy who died from an undiagnosed heart defect, I think he was in center camp.
04 or 05 there was a woman who flipped her truck on the way home. Yeah, the LLC wouldn't have counted it, but I do.

I'm beginning to feel a little clenching of the stomach.

Sorry, I didn't mean to stir up any bad feelings/memories. I have nothing but respect for those who lost their lives, or anything else at BM...I was just curious.
