Fixie on the Playa

Post by aclockworkapple » Tue Oct 28, 2008 7:39 pm

I've been thinking about building a fixed-wheel bike for some time now, and although I already have a mountain bike that works well on the playa, I was thinking about maybe bringing a fixie next year if I ever get around to building one.

Innovative suggestion, or absolutely horrible idea?

I mean it's not like you can coast that much anyway, at least early in the week...might help with maneuvering through crowds and tents, too.

But the main reason I'd love to do it is for the DIY nature of it all.

Also: can you attach thick mountain bike wheels to a fixie that normally runs on skinny wheels? Or do you need a special, larger frame for that? (I'm a total n00b with bike repair and such.)

that's a good enough reason right there, get building! heh, I rescued a couple bikes over the years that had become 'fixies' by default, as in the freewheel cogs had playa-jammed up. PM for bike building info, I'm in Santa Barbara too.
