Bathing while at Burning Man

Post by phil » Mon Sep 29, 2008 3:30 pm

Here's a partial quote from a guy who did a week-long backpacking trip using only what he carried with him:
As for keeping clean, I still swear by the following combination: A lightweight collapsible nylon bucket, Dr. Bronner’s pure Castile soap, and an MSR microfiber towel. This time, instead of using a bandanna as a washcloth, I cut a 3 inch square out of a cloth exfoliating scrub mitt I bought at Target. It worked much better and dried much faster than a bandanna. The towel also dried in a flash. I probably used less than 20 drops of soap fully cleaning myself and my alternating set of clothes daily.

Just to point out, he washed himself and his clothes with this set up. He wasn't camping "Leave no trace" as far as I can tell, so we may still have gray water to dispose of, but it looks like he had no issues getting his washcloth and towel to dry.

On my list of things I'm glad I brought to burning man: dr. bronner's peppermint soap. I brought some last year, and it got lost in the dark recesses of the "other stuff" bag in the car. This year I used it, and enjoyed it so much, that I am using it at home too. The smell is very invigorating, really perks me up.

Well, I've had peppermint schnapps with hot cocoa, so I guess I'll have to give peppermint soap a try.

Bronner's Rocks!! It is very playa "complimentary"! Use it over a basin and let it evaporate. Great for treating and preventing playa foot as well as a host of other grand uses. As I mentioned in another thread, I brought Bronner's and as a gift to camp mates and visitors I offered foot baths with it, followed by tea tree powder. Aaaaaaahhhh, so soothing.

Also, you don't have to "pack out" Bronner's as you do with Baby Wipes. So a suggestion is white cotton towels (hung out to dry during daytime) and Dr. Bronner's!
)'( Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out.

Rocket Shower??

Post by Xtevan » Thu Oct 16, 2008 9:38 pm

Anyone ever try this stuff?

"The deal is, cool down and once your active sweating has diminished, (The mfr claims it works best on active sweating but hey whaddo they know?) spray your self down with Rocket Shower and then damp towel yourself off. Comprised of witch hazel, grapefruit peel oil and peppermint oil, the product is refreshing, cooling and cleansing. It removes that sticky salty feeling and leaves your skin feeling dry and refreshed. Gone is that sandpaper rough feeling your dried sweat skin has against your clothes. The aroma is pleasant and quickly vanishes down to no fragrance at all, (Most importantly) not even your own!"

Sounds promising

Used our neighbor's little Coleman pop-up shower stand ($25?) (holds a 5 galllon solar shower bag) and is covered. Was thinking about getting one from Box*Mart, but thought the wind would d e v o u r it. Alas, to much surprise, it held like a little trooper, and even has hanging mesh compartments for soap, clothes, etc. Will definatily grab one for 09'. Only thing would suggest is to decorate it and make it radder, maybe a shower radio w/mirror and some lights for pre-dawn scrubbing.

Whoops! I hear ya phil--might have meant pre-dusk (before night). Was just thinking about making a pre-made/bought equipment more personalized/multi-functional (i.e- lighting it up). Could even get two side by side (one camp shower, one guest/neighbor shower.) At night to serve some purpose, could light them up and make them into confessional booths..."Dear Father, it has been two weeks since my last repentance of drinking hot coffee... :) "

The confessional shower combo makes metaphorical sense anyway. "Bless me father for I have gotten dirty, it's been a whole day since my last shower." "Consider that you are in the desert and take a shower before you leave here today."

Both times I have been out I've used Septi-Soft.
Mix 1oz in to 1 gallon of water and use a hand towel to rub on, another towel to dry off. No rinse required and it even works on your hair.
