RV'ers vs. tent'ers...why the hostility

Post by xenarchi » Fri Nov 07, 2008 8:25 am

Not hostility really but I have been wading through all the threads here and have seen a bit of back and forth.

I am no tough guy, don't want to RV it, but I need to come to the burn in 2009 and want to tent it. My plan is to rent a car from NJ, pack it full of crap and drive my arse out to NV. First timer as well... solo...:-)

Now I have been in tents before, hell I survived Ike stuck in the middle of an open field at the Moto GP races at Indy this year, but these RV guys got me all worried.

They seem to hate tents, despise them actually saying they should be banned. They are a fire hazard, a MOOP problem and a total pain to deal with.

Are tents on the Playa hated that much?

LOL. If anything, it's the other way around. Tents far out-number the RV's. Sounds like you took a joke post as being serious.

Not that seriously, but yeah perhaps I did. 8)

Just thought I read a few posts with RV'ers getting on tent'ers.

I'm still coming with my tent!! :P All I need now is my ticket, all my crap, a car...lot of stuff to do.

I haven't seen those posts by RVers, but my first guess is that the comments are pranks. As jkisha says, most of the posts I see are from tenters despising RVers for not being true to the spirit of Burning Man, lazing about in their air conditioned comfort, safe from the blasts of the dust storms, sipping their Jack Daniels on ice from the fridge, and watching the Burn on their satellite TV.

Either way, take it all with a grain of salt. It's your Burn, and you get to do it the way you want to. Even though you're totally, totally wrong.

Tents used to far outnumber RVs at Burning Man, but in recent years I'm not so sure, it seems that the majority now stays in an RV.
And yes, all the online hate mail regarding tents vs. RVs is from the tent people. The occasional jab back at the raghut losers is satirical. Mostly.

LOUD when it is windy. So that is on a daily basis for an undetermined amount of time. Better off to get a cheap solid one for the burn IMHO.

that's what I did, found one for 1K, working A/C and everything.......pretty darn good shape, then, found one from a fellow burner for 1500.....really good, A/C, and, a playa vet, and, set up for BM, with extra water tank........
now, of course, I have an extra, but, I think that's a good way to go.......

I don't regret it at all........

Yep, a pop-up will work but I also believe a hard-side is superior for Burning Man. You can air-condition it, it will resist dust, and generally will have more storage.
Hard-sides almost always have complete bath facilities too.

But primarily, they put you in a class above those dirty rag hut dwellers.

Hmm,
Don't think I'll be getting another camper for BM.

I may just work with what I've got. Apparently this thing is pretty well insulated and has an air conditioner.

Would it be much louder than a tent?
I don't mind it being loud, seeing as I'll be sleeping with ear plugs in anyway.

dont listen to the ARRRRRRRVEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSS.

go for a Tipi....

a good solid tipi not only withstands the wind and the dust (if you point the door in the correct direction) but it is easy to store, easy to carry, 15 minutes to set up, and its so much burnier than those aluma-wads and their shiny metal behemoths.

mine has a picture of sponge-bob painted on the side, but thats a personal decision and i'm not telling why.

the thing that you need to do is MAKE FRIENDS with a RvTard and USE THEIR SHOWER during the week.

or break up with the girlfriend, and hook up with the fabulously wealthy german guys with the duck. Now THEY have some serious Rv-age.

RV's, Tents. Love 'em both. Own both. Use both.

As long as both camps know what they are doing with them there should be no problem.

Don't be so dismissive. This is a serious issue and it could seriously ruin Burning Man for everyone.

Tent vs. RV

Post by Lord Of Ruin » Wed Nov 12, 2008 2:44 pm

I've done both. I did tent at the behest of camp mates my first year.

I had a very nice tent that I could stand up in. It was built under a Costco car port that I bought for the purpose. I had an inflatable air mattress that was full height (i.e. you can actually sit on it like a traditional bed.)

I was very comfortable, particularly at night. I didn't even both with sleeping bag, but just brought sheets and comforter. Very plush.

Last year I actually rented a 21 foot motor home that I had to myself. Wasn't crazy about the size, but it was amazing. No satellite dish and crap, but had bathroom, shower and bed, A/C, etc. More like a toy hauler.

I work a lot of staff shifts out there, so getting good sleep no matter what, 24/7 was critical for me.

My first year, my friends poo poo'd me renting an RV, saying that it wasn't in the spirit of the burn, that I would "lose my connection to everything" etc. I'd have to say that's a load of horse shit.

Almost every one of them are busily buying used trailers to fix up. So now it seems to be an emerging thing of "oh, you have a funky used RV you fixed up=you're ok vs. you rented a nice one=you are yuppie scum".

Would I go in my tent setup again? Sure. Does it hold a candle to thecomfort I felt in the RV? Not a friggin' chance. Each time I ate or slept, I bounded out of the trailer like it was arrival day.

That being said, I have been on other excursion where the rusticity of the event WAS part of the event for me. I took a sort of shabby pride in being able to survive minimally.

I guess it depends on that for you. I now prefer being able to NOT worry/fuss with camp so I can be out either working or experiencing all the great art and people that make up BM.

And I don't fall in with the whole "if you have an RV, you're inherently more rude" line of thinking. I see plenty of people that are rude, non-participatory, etc out there. Their camping method of choice doesn't necessarily correlate.

Some of the kindest and most giving people I passed this year were in big RV camps. Hell, I was walking from end to end one hot afternoon and one camp invited me under their very large shade and proceeded to walk me through a tasting tour of their microbrew taps!

I used a 2 man tent and a sleeping bag that I set up next to my truck. It worked very nicely. I ended up camping with a group of people that had RV's though, and after I came home on sunday night to find my tent pole broken, one of them were kind enough to let me sleep on the floor of the RV.
I found the tent to be much more comfortable, but that's just me.
