OK, for the first serious post:

I think the default world is moving closer to BM faster than BM is moving closer to the default world. BM looks so mainstream in large part because the mainstream looks so Burning Man.

Think back to the early to mid 90's when BM was in it's early years: electronic dance music was still mostly underground; gay culture existed openly only in small pockets in the country; tatoos and colored hair were still considered unusual; fire art was rare as was large-scale art and art cars. The Reagan administration had just spent the entire 80's doing it's best to repress sexual expression.

Now electronica, especially house, is common as are tats and streaked hair. People look for pretty much any chance to get up a costume. Gay is the new black (prop 8 reactionaries not withstanding). Burlesque and pole-dancing workouts are everywhere. Reno just had it's first fire arts festival, and fire dancing troupes exist in most major cities. Houston TX has an art car club.

So here's an interesting question:
If you were to create a festival that is as far from the mainstream today as BM was in the early 90's, what would it look like?

My festival would be located in a secluded area, would be difficult to get too - almost requiring a pilgrimage to get too.

It would have a focal point with a lot of fire involved, and for ease of logistics the focal point would be burned and rebuilt yearly.

It would be on some sort of grassy plain that has a great view, and a lot of water nearby - maybe a lake or large river.

it would be participant driven, with some sort of public vote on major themes, issues, layouts, etc.

there would be one ticket price - with enough of a margin to cover scholarship tickets and to cover all expenses.

It would be on private land to help - but not eliminate the licensing and permitting problems.

It would be loud, bright with llots of colors, and scary as hell!

pretty close to what we got now - and it would be 10 days long, and in July instead of August

i'd hold it in a Las Vegas strip mall parking lot.....no one would notice anything out of the ordinary.

I think it'd be near the sea.
there'd be a statue of a fellow walking on water, an Asian looking guy sitting cross legged, another person refusing to eat bacon, Joseph Smith, and Sun Myung Moon, all on top of a black cube.

As with MDMF007's, it'd be pilgrimage.
upon arrival, all would walk counter clockwise around said cube and statues, flagellating themselves with peacock feathers and singing the "Oscar Meyer Weiner" song, until "the Messiah (of the day)" leads them out and walks over the cliff......they'd all follow..........

I haven't worked out the landing yet.....

I don't know, I've never been to Burning Man so maybe I don't have a really informed opinion, but:

It seems to me that "mainstream" people that come to Burning Man, just coming to spectate will be just that. Spectators sticking to their camp, staying around for a week and then leaving. Maybe they come back in the future, maybe not. But if these people aren't what you consider a true Burner, an attendee that participates and doesn't just spectate, then sure maybe they're there physically, but they're not really in the spirit of it, they have no real effect on the burn or the community, so they kind of fall to the wayside. Burning Man is going to change, there's no doubt about that, all things do. But I think as long the core of the attendees remains and keeps the spirit of it, the others will just be there, taking up space.

But then again, like I said, just speculation since I haven't gone yet.

The man burns every night at midnight. He is a beatiful stainless-steel creation, powered by gas generated out of the casino's toilets.

Larry was running steel down to Vegas for construction projects three days a week. He hasn't had a Vegas run in over a month. All been local, up to Pokie or Rexburg, and over to California. The Indian casinos are hanging in there. He's also been doing non-flatbed runs. His dispatcher is hanging on to him, so he hasn't seen a paycut per mile, but he is getting 20~35% less miles per week.

I will say that if things don't pick up, I won't be on the playa next year.
Right now I'm squeezing like hell to keep my boat moorage, admittedly a luxury, but if I can't keep that up it's a Bad Sign.

Anti-M, do you find it somehow fucking Ironic that gas prices are way down today, yet there is no place anyone wants to drive. I haven't purchased any diesel recently and I know it is dropping slower then Gas, but I just drove from here to Sacramento and back (we do it all the time) and it was $100.00 for 25 gallons just a couple months ago, but I paid $50.00 for that same 25 gallons two days ago. price of crude is dropping even more, below $60.00 right now. (I heard that if crude went below $63.00 then Alaska would also have money problems).

Capt. maybe plan ahead, winter is coming and if you aren't going boating perhaps a less expensive storage method is a good plan. We plan on winterizing our trailer and motorhome which we usually heat all winter.

My goal with the RV park is just to pay expenses and manage to keep and maintain the property. With last year gas prices business went down by 50% and that's 50% of not much to begin with. With the recession being Global, German, Italy etc I wonder what other means of aquiring the legal tender I can manage to get going.
