Scale miniatures

Okay, I have two kits, a bus and a trailer. I know I can do minis, but can I do minis which will survive the playa? These are in one inch scale. I have done one inch houses before, and I completed the half inch. I even have done 1/144th scale. Most of my work is not "play with" it is "look at".

Input? Ideas? Suggestions?

The Booby Bar had some art in 07 that was in an enclosed clear box. The art was sent from overseas and had to be rebuilt on the playa but it looked sexy after the kids at Terminal City got it rebuilt. I think it was the Norwegians that made it.. Scale Burners or something like that. I think if its in a plexi enclosure you should be good.

Neither would I. I would end up smashing things.

Anyways, I'm mildly confused. Are these models of the bus/trailer you're taking to Burning Man?

They're models, actually kits right now ... and I am thinking of taking them to Burning Man once I get them finished. If I make them rugged, they'll withstand handling and the dust. I am not taking a full people-sized bus and trailer, we're tent campers, bubba!

I did see the scale model at the Booby Bar, if fact, I added a tiny camper to it!

And THIS is how they did it up at Ernie's miniatures, where I ordered it from. If they can hippie it up, I surely can burnerfy it!:

From the pictures the bus looks a little more rugged than the trailer. But hey, I know nothing about miniatures

Scale Burner camp was destroyed when UPS delivered it from Norway.

Important safety tip: Do not mark it fragile and entrust it to UPS.

If you are using wood (looks to be the case) you may want to put a teeny sponge with a few drops of water. Sort of like guitar players do so their instrument don't get trashed. Or another method of keeping some moisture about so the wood doesn't split apart n stuff.

Thanks TM, good idea. I actually know about that, having moved from very humid Japan to Cali, then very dry Utah. Even with precautions, one of my Japanese dolls cracked, along with a tansu or two, and the lid to the treadle sewing machine I scored on Big Trash Day.

There shouldn't be much of a problem, I live in a desert disguised as a suburb. The kits will dry out as I work on them. I've taken mini-minis with me, and they survived. Sorta.

I'm beginning to think this may be good Center Camp art, under Plexiglass, of course. Or is my ego inflated?

Important success tip; make sure you package your art well if you expect to send it internationally by ANY delivery method (it was placed without any cushioning into a tight-fitting case). Consider a Package Store service if you are not sure how to package it.

oh, and as far as the bus and trailer, I always liked the interactive doll-house type art with a bunch of figurines and accessories (and maybe some play-do to make what is missing). maybe some battery powered led's to light them up...

I liked the previous mini-work, AntiM. Especially liked the idea of the miniature dollhouse in the blue fairy room.

You should see the fully furnished dollhouse I made which can sit in the palm of my hand. 1/144th scale!

The movers in Japan carefully crafted a custom box for my full scale dollhouse (no pics available). The packers in San Diego simply up-ended it and dropped it in a box. Grrr. I haven't repaired it yet, it was being remodeled when the move happened and I unpacked it and let it sit in the workroom. Ten years, maybe I should work on it too.

I like the play with in theory, but I dislike the may be stolen or broken potential. This requires thought. A fully furnished miniature equals hundreds of dollars. I couldn't put a price on my half scale house ... well, I could but we're talking serious change.

...I see, hmmm. How about a sealed glass/clear plastic box with minis inside. Add a dozen or so scale humans and whatever on magnetic bases. Then have handles outside with opposite magnets in tip. By maneuvering handles underneath, a limited motion can be imparted to the figurines (but not fast enough to do any damage). That way Art is safe yet there is some interactivity. You could even have +/- figurines (south pole down / north pole down) and the same with handles. That way for every given handle it would push some figurines away and attract others. For added fun use loose iron filings for the "playa" then the handles would make interesting patterns as you move them around. Could also have other things happen by using hall effect switches (magnetic) combined with relays to switch things on/off when you find the right spot/polarity. Could do the same with figurine (have certain spots that when a figurine is placed there, a hidden hall switch is turned on/off). Then by having all the right things switched the right way, a grand finale could occur...(like Zsu-Zsu last year).

Then it was rebuilt to the near-flawless condition you saw it in the Booby Bar! Don't know who did the repair, but I believe they were Apokiliptika and/or Booby Bar people. The "Scale Burner Camp" was even registered as a full fledged Theme Camp with the BMORG.

We had lots of fun building the Scale:Burners camp for BM 2007. Sent it by UPS. They garanteed it would arrive safe. And this is what it looked like when it arrived:

We're planning on doing a Scale:Burner camp for 2009 as well. We got help from the Booby Bar to put it back together again! Thank you Boobarians!

If I do a scale piece ... other than the bus/trailer, I have some HO things, including an HO Booby Bar ... perhaps there can be more than one camp at the Bar? A scale village?

Box Burner lead the Herring rebuild team!
BurnerBaby and Ricochet were great at assistants And BayBridgeSue sat in on some toothpick realigning stradigies!!!
Actaully I think theyre were at least 25+- people coming in and out of lemmongrad who all lent a hand!

I label things as Fragile and Liquid.
Best to use the professional labels, though they are initially expensive.
No one wants a trail of liquid running from where they dropped a box.

International is the most iffy type of shipping though.
If I can give any advice on packing next time, email me.
Usually a rigid internal package with a sacrificial outer layer works best.
Structural styrofoam will actually protect a car in shipping during an accident.

If your worried still about the structural integrity of the models on the playa, why not make some sort of viewing box?

Plexy glass, caulking, cristmas lights, and a stand to hold it all on for our viewing pleasures.

maybe a working volcano.
