It is something that used to happen. Since nobody wants 40,000 drugged hippies, topless and shirtcocking (?) on the Black Rock desert in July people stopped going out there then. The ground is still very wet and everyone always get stuck and die. Much better is the Events down by Los Vegas called Dark Skies. (I saw the best fireworks display of my life on the Playa in July....)

My buddy went this year. It's advised to take the eastern road up, just past the frog pond...and in something that can handle rugged terrain. Both years I went, someone was either injured or killed, driving that road.

..and yes...even the DPW got stuck in the mud one year

07 was my first year, stayed with RhythmWave at 3:30 and D, or some such. Went again 08 and stayed with CampContact, 4:30 and E. Had a great time at SF Decom this year - great vibe to the party and the music was kickin. Liked the live samba band too.

Okay everyone. We cannot keep up this cruel charade.

Burningman is the biggest faked event since the Moon landing.

I don't even leave my house. HOurs of Skype conferences making up and rehearsing our stories. Nobody builds those mvs, we just photoshop them. And I tell you, next year I hope I draw the "meet a cutie and have mad passionate empty sex" card for a change.

I know people who go to all the Burningman Parties and Regional events, and have for years, but have never been to the main event. Are they Burners?

2006, guest of the KazBus MV camp (Camp Lucky).
2007, organized Kinetic Sculpture Racing Theme Camp; repaired bicycles too.
2008, with Camp Inspiratum.

2009.... May camp by myself as "Elliot's Bicycle Repair" or some such. A bit early to say.

You all may have attended, but have you participated?

blinky lights on your bike doesn't count nor does a cheap scream mask!

did you gift, stay after the event to clean up or helped to build the city?

Did you walk up to the lone person camping next to you and invite them for dinner?

Help someone pry the chain out of their freewheel?

did you bitch about how stupid playa names were and asked for their "Christain name?"

Did you cry on the night of the burn because you couldn't go and had another obligation!

You all may have attended, but have you participated?

Custom made EL wire set up that blinks with the music as I ride by a sound camp. I don't need a mask.

I gift repairs, helped tear down Arctica, took other peoples moop home, worked with the potty project.
Did you walk up to the lone person camping next to you and invite them for dinner?
No but I did let them use my shower. I'm not a good cook.
Help someone pry the chain out of their freewheel?
Rebuilt a tall bike to perfect operation by sacrificing one of my bikes and numerous other repairs.

No.

No. I know my priorities and always make the burns.

Every year since 99
Have I participated....
Blinky lights and a scream mask dont count ? why not ?
The first year I went, the best description someone told me just before I left was "Unless you build a giant Theme camp on the Playa edge, someone somewhere wont think youre doing enough. So dont sweat them. At the very least, even if you just wear jeans and a T when all you wear back home are suits and ties, that can be enough. You'll figure the rest out as you go".

Adopting our neighbors, helping ppl out with whatever, offering a smile and some food and drink to whomever happens to stop by.... We do that stuff cause that's just the type of ppl we are, not because of someones version of participating.

I remember one year after doing a 4 hour shift in the freezer truck at Ice camp, walking (quite sore I might add) back to our camp, a bunch of asshats in an artcar with a megaphone pointed me out to his buddies and yelled with a sneery voice "exhibit A, spectator in the wild, note jeans, sandals and baseball cap".

Thats when I decided I would NEVER pay attention to what other ppl think we should be doing in Black Rock. We have fun, we're open and like minded ppl always tend to gravitate our way.

I've always enjoyed reading your posts Zeus. If you've done all that stuff as I'm sure you have, then good on ya, come by and have a drink and a munch with us next year.

But putting it all in a list to challenge other ppl to justify their presence on the Playa, just makes me think of the guy with the megaphone.

A scream mask on a priest robe would be better! Or something just out of the ordinary is fine.

But i know how you feel after doing a shift handing out ice and walking back to your camp tired and getting heckled- though I was really in my tourist outfit- bright orange shirt, bright green cargo shorts and one of those safari hats: lt looked over done.

The point of my list wasn't that you had to do all of the above to rate, just if you did one or more or something totally different from my sugestion. And you did! But I can ask everyone, "did you go?" therefore you're ok to post here. To me its not that you have gone, but what you did when you got there. One year, I remember this group that came with a pile of shit. They partied. Were nice, but when it came time to leave they did and left their pile of shit including a sofa and moop for the clean up crew to take care of. I was one of the clean up crew.

You can attend, but did you participate? They did and they didn't.

A freewheel is that cluster of gears on the rear wheel of a bike. Like when back in 99, when I came across tow lovely european women stuck out on the playa with their chain jammed in it. They were amazed to find out that I pulled out some surgical gloves to remove the chain. But I always carry them as part of my everyday bike repair kit- don't want to ride with greasy hands do we.

The invite sounds great I'll take you up on it.

I cleaned the POJ, before and after I used it, with lysol, seats, handles, whatever.
does that count?
volunteered for a shift at HeebeeJeebee, did other energy/healing work during the dust storm on Saturday............I think I was at Apokalipta........just across the intersection from the Bobby bar......

is that what you mean by participating?
need I list more?

does it matter?
I'd think "Burner" is a state of mind, not what , or who, you do..........

just my thoughts.......

Does attending a rock concert make you a musician?

Does sitting in the audience make you a stand up comic

Then What make a Burner?

Is it sitting drinking beers along side your truck and take one lone trip to the playa, or standing in line for ice, or just paying for your ticket?

Thousands have gone but does that give them the right to say, I'm a Black Rock citizen.

Eplaya has a higher percent of participants, does that make them burners?

:D
I've been x number o times, i'm i more holier then thou.
And also the matter of
...attended...
versus "participated".

When I read the original post, I immediately worried about.... yes, precicely those two issues. "This thread can only turn out badly" I thought to myself. But then I realized that by recapping our BM histories by the years, we have a new avenue for reliving and sharing our experiences, and to learn from them, so I posted my years and camps.

Now...

As for the "attendance vs. participation" issue, I certainly agree that BM is, and must be, all about participation. "No spectators!" That's the very nature of the event. All of us have a responsibility to screen the people we recruit, and to coach them, and even to steer "spectators" away from the event.
So perhaps we can make good use of this thread to further this cause.

As for the potential "holier than thou" problem... well, all humans have a fiercefully strong need to be recognized for our achievements -- no secret that. The trick, methinks, is to turn this mutual admiration society into something productive, both for ourselves and for the "virgins" who visit this forum in search of information, and perhaps we can coach each other in this regard.

I gotta say that my first response is "There's no Team in Fuck You"

I could answer yes or the equivalent to every one of those questions but I resent being asked. I could answer yes to all of those and still be a dickhead.

The OP had a reasonable question. There were fifty thousand people on the playa this year. I met damn few of the people I see posting here, so it makes good sense to look for some clues on people's backround.

Once, when it was calm and almost no dust was blowing, I opened one of the windows of my RV. And a couple times I shut off the A/C when I got TOO cold.

Not really true,... but if it was you’d be serving as a your fellow Burners by providing an example, letting them relax into the flow and stop worrying if they are doing enough.
