PSY-TRANCE: Luv it or Hate it?

Post by AmericanFremin1 » Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:44 pm

Before BurningMan i had never heard Psy-Trance. over the past 3 burns PT has steadily made its move on me culminating in a full on Psy-Trance assault thursday before the gates opened.

the scene: we were having a civilized meal for the 'feed the artists ' campaign, the purple palace wuz there playing classical muzak, when a 3 axel vintage army truck rolled in with 2000 watts of bone rattling sound and just Psy-Tranced the fuck out of the place for 5 hours. my tent was only 20 yards away and it was a crazy night of dreams and overcoming fear.....till i finally realized that i love PT.

then on friday night before the burn i took hofmann medicine and trekked what seemed like miles to SpaceElevator @ 11 and ZZ, where i floated out to the trash fence and had one hell of a crazy night. that night changed me forever and PT played a major role in the change.

today: i just returned from a regional burn where i became the Psy-Trancer and just unloaded on my camp all night and well into the morning. i got great responses from burners and virgins alike. (there was a PT tent placed out in a field run by these goth dudes who spun this nasty stuff that was not PT, maybe dark-trance, but not PT. real psy-trance i'm learning is evolutionary and yes dark sometimes, but it challenges you; takes you on a journey. needless to say those guys were very lonely out there and cold as fuk too.)

i have been seeking a genre of music to dedicate my Dj'ing & musical skills too. i have found it and it is called PSY-TRANCE!

Please share your feelings on PT. love it or hate it, Psy-Trance is on the frontline of evolutionary beat conflagration and i see it being much bigger on the playa in '09.

thanks for reading

peace

I've always been partial to goa-psy and at times hardstyle/jumpstyle. I don't mind electro-house if its done right.

Hooked

Post by justfred » Tue Nov 18, 2008 2:49 pm

I've been going to the burn for 11 years, somehow this year it just clicked and now I've started seeking it out. I tend to like tracks with extensive vocal samples. Here's some I like (maybe the purists will tell me they're crap or some other genre - fine, but I'd love more suggestions!):

Alien Project
Astrix
Hallucinogen
1200 Micrograms
CPU
Infected Mushroom
Logic Bomb
What goes around, comes around.

Psy trance simply blows. And anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

Luv it! Totally unknown to me before the burn... I used to lump all such music under the label "techno" (or more disparaging name "Unst Music" because of the downbeat--UNST-UNST-UNST-UNST) but after hearing varied strains of this joyful noise (psytrance) at the burn while having the best time/s of my life I get warm fuzzies whenever I hear it. Thanks for the post, because I was still referring to it generically as "Burn Music" for lack of the exact term.

:? Love it OR hate it?!? Uhm, I like music, some individual pieces more than others..., but loving or hating just seems too extreme...

This jam rocked our world on the bike ride back to camp from Garage Mahal's happy hour. We were slowly pedaling along through the sand, all a tad drunk on stiff Shirtcockers (!) when a medium size MV sporting an industrial strength sound system (and about 20 ecstatic Burners sitting/standing and/or hanging off the sides) cruised up from behind severely pumping this...

Alien Project - Melting Colours

The music and vibe of this rolling rave were so magnetic that we all immediately picked up speed to keep pace and boogie along...exchanging huge grins and hi-5s with the riders and driver/DJ. Who knew I could "dance" so well riding a lowrider tricycle through the shittiest of playa conditions after three healthy Shirtcockers?! Burning Man is an educational as well as cultural experience.

its ALL thumpy thumpy....give me a fucking break.......beat.

just because some israeli's added subliminal torah passages, speeded up, and played backwards over a disco beat that's been jacked by 55 BPM does NOT mean its psy-trance.

True Psy-Trance is The Carpenters, "There's got to be a Morning After" at 45 rpm. mixed with C.C. Factory "Things that make you go HuH?"....

of course, it helps to take thorazine beforehand, but i'm a purist.

i have found cutting edge psytrance cut by unknowns to be my fav. the beats evolve every few months as technology and conscious changes. some of the older PT sounds a little canned and 'eruo' which isn't bad, but i'm listening to stuff that is pan-dimensional with beats coming from directions i didn't know existed. go check out psytopia for the best beats. i really like organix, liquid soul and the more spiritual stuff. check out astro pilot, musical genus from siberia. his beats bump into your DNA....not so dancy but epic to listen to on your phones.

Love, love, love Psy Trance, especially the stuff with the tough proggy basslines, not so keen on the really crunchy stuff that was big about ten years ago.

Christopher Lawrence rocked it with a banging psy trance set at Opulent Temple this year and last year. There are Mp3s of his sets from both years floating around, worth checking out.

I met Christopher after his set both years at OT, not only a down to earth guy but a big supporter of BM and OT, even doing a fundraiser for OT in San Francisco sometime soon.

brcprincess....check out psytopia.org for the cutting edge stuff. i respect lawrence, but he's like phat boy slim/moby of PT. the coolest thing about PT is that it is evolving every few months. that's also what i luve about bassnectar. he changes every time i see him.

anyway, the organix, thick synth BIG bass 135bpm range is what is awesome now.

Yes! I got bit hard by the psy bug three years ago and it's in my blood now. I love to drive to it. Lately I've been giving it a rest but it's still with me. Great to play loud when building art in the garage with friends. There's that go! go! go! that makes every turn of a wrench like a paint brush slobbering color on your work!

A couple years back, we had a theme camp with some speakers facing the road and whenever we had a white out dust storm we'd blast the PT. I loooved the dust-masked faces that would emerge from the ether and start dirt dancing with us!

I Like it. I like a lot of music. I got to have some kind of variety though. My favorite genre is EBM such as Front 242 and I can listed to that all day long, however, not all week long. Kudos to the DJ's out there that played it loud and mixed it up!

I don't like psytrance, but I'm a huge fan of some jazzy, funky house or heavy drum and bass. :-)

Psy Trance in Reno

Post by Mister Jellyfish Mister » Fri Jan 30, 2009 6:54 am

As it would happen, our Yuri's Night Reno-Compression in April will primarily feature Psy Trance DJ's. The outer space theme just gels with it nicely.

I really got into psytrance in 2002 at Basswave Marina...where Root Society is located now a days.

The Sunday International Psytrance night killed it !! Such sweet memories.

LOVE IT!! Been listening to psy since about 93 when I picked up a copy of Juno Reactors Bible Of Dreams.

Then it progressed to acts like Astral Projection, Hallucinogen, now I'm into sounds like Broken Toy, Wizzy Noise, Mekkanikka, etc. Hopefully I'll get to play some psy on the playa!

OK - being new to most forms of electronic music in the last year - I am just starting to figure out what I like. Based on what I read in this thread I tracked down some music to see what I like. Have to say - I am REALLY enjoying Infected Mushroom!

So thanks for this thread - it opened me up and helped me find some stuff I like!

Underworld!!!! Heard if for first time at Burn then when my Zen Master and I went back to default world, he played me Underworld and I couldn't help but to dance. Yep, I was naked. It took me back to the burn. I played it alot in my spinning classes and I play it on my IPOD. The burn has turned me onto so much great tunes. Not your typical campfire Kumbaya stuff.

Any musicians have any venues at the burn this year, please let me know. I would love to come dance in your magic.

I wouldn't classify Underworld as Psytrance, they're definitely electronic though and a badass act!!
Cow Girl still has to be my favorite Underworld track. =)
