That's what people with no talent say when someones dares to criticize their clumsy work :D

The problem is that if you don't have art that goes a little too far, all you have is safe art. Safe art is bland.

I agree with that statement. My own art offends Christians, vegans, Muslims, Jews, God haters, communists, and feminists. I had some eco lesbians set my house on fire a few years ago. So I have fairly good grasp about controversial work :)

My point is that shock value alone does not make art. Safe art is boring. But pure hate art belongs in history books. It's usually as boring as it is shallow.

are you suggesting that non-offensive art is always bland?

is it impossible to say something interesting without insulting someone?

i agree that copying the old masters or painting cheesy landscapes is boring ... but to limit ourselves to art that offends ... ? is there no other way?

A beautiful form, or line or texture, material, or color contrast, when it works it works Art can still be beautiful the emotion brought to by those who experience it. It’s harder to pull of than cheep emotional content and less ego centered than the heavy handed artist approach of attempting to force others to experience His or her vision.

HaHaHa...is that a reference to my avatar of a Jewish actor pretending to to be an alien pretending to be a Nazi? Naw Judism's not for me. Only one god and no shrimp. I am more interested in opressing vegans. Maybe round some of them up and place them in re-eductaion camps and make them watch television.

I've alway though that art should touch the soul.

A lot of political art seems to fall into that 'get it?' category Another big segment seems to consist of representations of political talking points. And another big point seems to focus on being propagandistic.

i know political art has it's place, but the vast majority of it, to me, always feels very juvenile, very 'high school'. Even when it's beautiful, the 'message' seems to be delivered in a ham-handed way.

Though I believe that often that is not the intent.

For instance, I'm in the process of altering a 'Big Brother is Watching You' poster into a 'Barack Obama is Watching You' poster. The 'message' is all too clear....and yet....the reason I decided to do it didn't have a whole lot to do with the message. It had more to do with the nature of Obama posters I saw during the campaign. A LOT of them reminded me of soviet-style propaganda posters, and some looked like movie ads--and when I looked at my poster(which looms over my workshop) I was struck by how easily Obamas face would fit in the space where Big Brothers' face is.

So, my rationale isn't, to me, ham-handed, but the end product is.

I think the percieved cheapness and shallowness comes less from the artist, and more from the subject matter.

well said, lurker ... that is my conundrum exactly ... but that is what sets the great artists apart, isn't it? to transcend the common is the trick ... and politics is pretty damn common, IMHO... generally speaking, of course...

No need to be offensive - unless that's the only reason you are here. Is it ok if I ask for clarification?

Show us some of your playa art! I am sure it will provoke interesting discussion. Do you have a link?

Art = expression, no? But then again, arguing semantics are just about as fun (and effective) as arguing politics!

Nah, I woulda gone for 'Armus'--that black slime monster that killed Denise Crosby on Star Trek. I'mean, c'mon, who doesn't like black slime, am I right?

And I don't like sock puppets, they're not expressive enough, y'know? Silicone or latex, with a lot of good detail points you can move around to add to the realism.

And, Ygmir, I did say Denise Crosby--she's TNG.
