Would you like that with flame effects, sound system and optional stripper pole?

For yourself, or to rent out to others?

I can detail mine and deliver it to the playa for a week's usage for about six grand. (Provided the price of gas doesn't do anything stupid.)

This whole buying or renting a used art car thing was discussed to death a while ago. The general consensus is that it isn't feasible.
The biggest issue is DMV licensing. You can't guarantee that.
One of my best friends sold his art car early this year. The buyer wanted a ready-made playa vehicle, and this one had been on the playa several times... boy the buyer was pissed when it was denied a license this year! (It was too much "art car" and not enough "mutant vehicle".) I saw that coming.
Hell, that's why my friend sold it.

The other issue is that sufficiently mutated vehicles are one-off customs best operated by their creator. That's the only person who knows what the hell was made out of what and can keep it running. If you can't handle building and transporting a mutant vehicle, chances are you can't maintain it either.

There's always a moral debate about purchasing a ready-made playa vehicle, but that one is more subjective.

Captain,

That may explain the complete lack of serious responses here. 8)

^ i blamed that on you guys in general :p

but yeah, if i wanted a mutant vehicle (i wont this year though), it would have be be designed in part by me. Id feel odd driving someone else's creation

It's the same as custom cars.
If you don't know what you want and don't have specific ideas, you'd better have cubic cash to pay someone to do that for you.
There are people that will do art cars to spec and there are plenty of people that have bought all kinds of things and put their own stamp on them.
Being enthusiastic about what you have helps.
Learning what you have as far as parts and construction is very useful if you can do that, of course.

Just as with any custom, you can spend a long time looking for exactly what you want.
A show car that has a few miles can be a great deal and a platform to change to exactly your tastes.

The people that really have trouble with creation and licensing are those that don't really get the idea of conveying something with a project, even if it's just that feeling from seeing it.

Art cars change hands all the time.
Some people can't wait for the next project.
But if you can't do your own work, you may need a good shop to deal with things.
I have a car with no original drivetrain parts on it.
I have a shop that can deal with that, but I need to be the one that decides if I like the current setup or whether I want to change something, and if so, how.

I know someone in the business of creating customs that understands burning man.
If you know what you want, he'll give you advice anytime.
But if you don't know what you want and want a turnkey mv. better bring your checkbook.
I have no doubt anything he did would sail through licensing.

It's best to figure out what you can and can't do on your own, and then figure out what you want.
And keep an open mind for new inspiration.

Hey Gadget. Welcome to ePlaya. I'll spell it out to you, and I mean no offense.
Since we don't know you, we must respond to only what you write, and the fact that you are new on this forum.
The impression I get from your post, is that you are not ready to take charge of a Mutant Vehicle in Black Rock City, no matter who built it. Mutant Vehicles are -- and yes, should be -- artistic creations of great benefit to all Burning Man participants. To take charge of such a Work Of Art is bound to involve a great deal of thinking and planning and discussing and so forth.

Some builders of Mutant Vehicles work in solitude, then spring their creation on the rest of us. Others collaborate extensively -- sometimes here on ePlaya. Myself, I do have an idea for a MV, and if I were to discuss it here, I think the first post would run at least a couple of full screens.

The fact that you post a single sentence asking for an "art car", or even several, suggests that you do not yet understand the concepts involved. You force us to assume that you are just looking for something that will spare you walking and bicycling in BRC. This, in case you are a complete newbie to the Burning Man philosophy, is a total non-starter. BRC is a pedestrian and bicycle city. Builders of art may apply for a permit to make their art movable and self-propelled. Even this standard has been tightened recently (which I approve of).

I'm taking time to write this for you, Gadget, but also for the many other "virgins" who will come after you, since the headline of your post is sure to attract others with the same idea. Burning Man is something very different from the rest of society -- something special and precious. Only time will tell if you grow to comprehend the Burning Man philosophy.

Meanwhile, read all you can here on ePlaya and on the BM web site proper.

that was a thoughtful and gentle response Elliot. Did you type and delete a few versions before that one got submitted? I agree. I'll stand back and let the learning curve do it's own thing.

Well now.... Having lost that week's six grand rental deal, you are now anxious to fill that vacancy in your art car's schedule. Salvage the situation. Minimize your losses.
So you'll accept four grand, and throw in a uniformed chaffeur -- if I pay cash in advance, no refund.

I borrow the four grand, then... based on my
thoughtful and gentle
relationship with Gadget, I rent the car to Gadget for five grand, repay the loan and the interest, and pocket several hundred dollars -- for producing absolutely nothing.

How am I doin'?

Can't get it ready and out there for four grand. I tried this approach in the "Billionaires..." thread to and your kind offer is the closest I've gotten to a bite. :P

Five grand and I get to pee in your water bottle. (That'll learn ya.)

Ala' Le Chat Noir, I will be posting pics of the progress of "Tanks a Lot". I just found a mechanic that can fix the 50+ year old motor I have...

The guy who started this thread is the same one that had a website advertising all sorts of burner supplies, from tents to clothing to whatever, delivered to the playa. The thread he started about that mysteriously vanished (no surprise there!) and I'm pretty sure this guy just wants to acquire an art car that he can add to his inventory of burner paraphernalia for sale. He has zero idea what the deal about mutant vehicles is.
You'll notice he hasn't made any replies other than the original post fishing for product; he has no real interest in the subject.

I don't know! The burner crowd being what it is, there are spoof sites and that's what I figured it for; but the thread got deleted, so maybe it was a real attempt at a commercial site. Also, this guy's request to buy an artcar popped up right after we joked about wanting to buy all our burn stuff from the site including art cars and how much trouble it would save us.
That, and the poster never talks to anyone.
It's either a sock puppet and a great piece of satire, or maybe the freakin' guy was serious?!
I was leaning toward a big joke until the thread was deleted... that made me wonder...

I reported the business post for TOS violation. They were selling crap for money, like the 5 dollar webcams from china for 15 bucks etc etc. It was not a share or co-op deal rather you pay for your stuff and it would get delivered to the playa. I thought it a bad idea all around relying on some business to deliver your shelter and whatnot for ya. What if they had a meltdown right before the gates opened etc etc.. goes against the radical self reliance principle as well.

Well, we can play with that over on the bus thread, but... tell ya' what....

If "gadget" is really a profiteer -- an enemy of the very concept of Burning Man -- then I have a free "art bus" ride to offer him:
